Όπλα μαζικής παραπληροφόρησης

Καθώς οι σχέσεις Λονδίνου – Μόσχας οδηγούνται στην άβυσσο, με αφορμή τη δηλητηρίαση του Ρώσου διπλού κατασκόπου Σεργκέι Σκρίπαλ, ένας άνθρωπος θα μπορούσε να διαλευκάνει όσα πραγματικά συνέβησαν. Το μοναδικό πρόβλημα είναι ότι βρέθηκε νεκρός, κοντά στο σπίτι του, πριν από 15 χρόνια. Είχε κάνει το λάθος να αποκαλύψει ότι η βρετανική κυβέρνηση ψευδόταν για τα ανύπαρκτα όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής του Ιράκ.

Δεκαπέντε χρόνια συμπληρώνονται φέτος από μια υπόθεση που θα έκανε και τα πιο συναρπαστικά μυθιστορήματα κατασκοπίας του Τζον λε Καρέ να θυμίζουν ανιαρές, υπηρεσιακές αναφορές κάποιου χαμηλόβαθμου διπλωμάτη. Τον Ιούλιο του 2003 ο Βρετανός επιστήμονας και σύμβουλος του υπουργείου Αμυνας, Ντέιβιντ Κέλι, εντοπίζεται νεκρός στο Οξφορντσάιρ της Αγγλίας.

Η Αστυνομία ανακοινώνει ότι ο καρπός του ήταν χαραγμένος και δίπλα στο σώμα του υπήρχε ένα κουτί με παυσίπονα Co-proxamol. Ο φάκελος κλείνει με τη σημείωση «αυτοκτονία» ενώ οι εισαγγελικές αρχές αποφασίζουν αρχικά να απαγορεύσουν την πρόσβαση στα στοιχεία για 70 χρόνια –κίνηση που πέφτει σαν λάδι στη φωτιά των θεωριών συνωμοσίας που θέλουν τις βρετανικές μυστικές υπηρεσίες να εμπλέκονται στον θάνατο του επιστήμονα.

Λίγες εβδομάδες νωρίτερα ο Ντέιβιντ Κέλι, μιλώντας σε δημοσιογράφο του BBC, είχε αμφισβητήσει τα στοιχεία για τα υποτιθέμενα όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής του Σαντάμ Χουσεΐν, με τα οποία οι κυβερνήσεις του Τζορτζ Μπους και του Τόνι Μπλερ προχώρησαν στην εισβολή και κατάληψη του Ιράκ.

Αν και οι συνάδελφοί του τον θεωρούσαν «ιέρακα» και ο ίδιος δεν έκρυβε το μίσος του για το καθεστώς του Σαντάμ Χουσεΐν, φαίνεται ότι δεν άντεξε να αναμασά την προβοκάτσια του Τόνι Μπλερ -όπως έκανε, δηλαδή, σχεδόν το σύνολο του κρατικού μηχανισμού.

Αυτό που ελάχιστοι γνώριζαν ακόμη και τότε είναι ότι ο Ντέιβιντ Κέλι είχε στήσει την καριέρα του (και τη συνεργασία του με τις βρετανικές μυστικές υπηρεσίες) στην παρακολούθηση των ρωσικών προγραμμάτων βιολογικού και χημικού πολέμου.

Το 1989, η υπηρεσία αντικατασκοπίας MI6 θα τον προσεγγίσει για να του αναθέσει μία από τις σημαντικότερες αποστολές της καριέρας του: να ανακρίνει τον Ρώσο επιστήμονα Βλαντιμίρ Πασέτσνικ που είχε αυτομολήσει στη Δύση.

Ο Πασέτσνικ υποτίθεται ότι αποκαλύπτει την ύπαρξη μυστικού προγράμματος βιολογικού πολέμου της πρώην ΕΣΣΔ και ο Κέλι έχοντας κερδίσει τα εύσημα των βρετανικών και αμερικανικών μυστικών υπηρεσιών ετοιμάζεται για την επόμενη αποστολή του: μαζί με Αμερικανούς και Βρετανούς επιστήμονες πραγματοποιεί μια άκρως απόρρητη επίσκεψη σε πρώην σοβιετικά εργαστήρια της Σιβηρίας, όπου σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες πραγματοποιούνταν πειράματα με ιό ευλογιάς.

Σήμερα, καθώς το ντόμινο που ξεκίνησε με τον πόλεμο του Ιράκ έχει μετατρέψει ολόκληρες περιοχές της Μέσης Ανατολής σε σωρούς ερειπίων, η Βρετανία ξεκινά έναν νέο ψυχρό πόλεμο με τη Ρωσία, στο πεδίο όπου είχε διαπρέψει ο Ντέιβιντ Κέλι.

Για αρκετούς αναλυτές, βέβαια, όπως ο Βρετανός πρώην πρέσβης στο Ουζμπεκιστάν Κρεγκ Μάρεϊ, αλλά και ο διάσημος ντοκιμαντερίστας Τζον Πίλγκερ, ο φάκελος της δηλητηρίασης του Ρώσου διπλού πράκτορα είναι εξίσου διάτρητος με τα στοιχεία για τα όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής του Ιράκ.

Πριν από ένα χρόνο μάλιστα ο επικεφαλής του προγράμματος εντοπισμού χημικών όπλων της Βρετανίας, Ρόμπιν Μπλακ, υποστήριξε ότι δεν υπάρχουν επαρκή στοιχεία που να αποδεικνύουν την ύπαρξη της ουσίας Νόβιτσοκ, που πιστεύεται ότι χρησιμοποιήθηκε για τη δηλητηρίαση του Σκρίπαλ. Ο Ρόμπιν Μπλακ ήταν στενός συνεργάτης του Ντέιβιντ Κέλι και ίσως (αν ο τελευταίος ζούσε) να ερευνούσαν μαζί την υπόθεση.

Οι εποχές όμως έχουν αλλάξει. Το BBC, το οποίο το 2003 τολμούσε να αντιπαρατεθεί με τη βρετανική κυβέρνηση για τον θάνατο του Ντέιβιντ Κέλι, σήμερα χλευάζει όσους αμφισβητούν την επίσημη θέση του Λονδίνου για τη δηλητηρίαση του Σκρίπαλ.

Οταν ο αρχηγός των Εργατικών, Τζέρεμι Κόρμπιν, τόλμησε να ψελλίσει ότι η πρωθυπουργός οφείλει να προσκομίσει επαρκή στοιχεία για την εμπλοκή της Ρωσίας, πριν τορπιλίσει τις διπλωματικές σχέσεις με τη Μόσχα, το BBC τού φόρεσε μια ρωσική τραγιάσκα και τον παρουσίασε σε μια γιγαντοοθόνη με φόντο το Κρεμλίνο και τον Ναό του Αγίου Βασιλείου.

Η απόσταση από το να τον αποκαλέσει «πράκτορα της Ρωσίας», όπως είχε κάνει λίγες ημέρες νωρίτερα ο κίτρινος Τύπος της Βρετανίας, είχε σχεδόν εκμηδενιστεί.

Οι κυβερνήσεις και οι μυστικές τους υπηρεσίες, σε Ανατολή και Δύση, συνεχίζουν να χρησιμοποιούν τις ίδιες μακιαβελικές πρακτικές που ακολουθούν εδώ και αιώνες. Το ερώτημα είναι εάν οι πιθανότητες να μάθουμε τι πραγματικά συμβαίνει αυξάνονται ή μειώνονται με το πέρασμα του χρόνου.
