11η Απριλίου: Η ημέρα που οι ΗΠΑ συνέλαβαν … τη δημοσιογραφία

Λίγες εικόνες θα μπορούσαν να συνοψίσουν το επίπεδο των δημοκρατικών θεσμών και της ελευθερίας του Τύπου στις κοινωνίες της Δύσης, όσο τα πρώτα πλάνα από τη σύλληψη του συν-δημιουργού του Wikileaks, Τζούλιαν Ασάνζ.


Εμφανώς καταβεβλημένος από τα προβλήματα υγείας που αντιμετωπίζει (για τα οποία η πρεσβεία του Ισημερινού του αρνούνταν θεραπεία σε μια νέα μορφή βασανιστηρίων) και κάτωχρος από τη σχεδόν ολοκληρωτική έλλειψη επαφής με τον ήλιο, ο Ασάνζ κρατούσε στα χέρια του ένα βιβλίο που αποκαλύπτει τις πραγματικές ισορροπίες δυνάμεων στο εσωτερικό του αμερικανικού κράτους: Το περίφημο History of the National Security State, στο οποίο ο Αμερικανός διανοούμενος, Γκορ Βιντάλ, εξέταζε τη διαπλοκή του στρατιωτικο-βιομηχανικού συμπλέγματος, για το οποίο μιλούσε ο πρόεδρος Αϊζενχάουερ, με το βαθύ κράτος των μυστικών υπηρεσιών.

Λίγα λεπτά αργότερα, η Σκότλαντ Γιάρντ ανακοίνωνε και επισήμως πως η σύλληψη έγινε για λογαριασμό των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών, που τώρα ζητούν την έκδοσή του — μια χώρα στην οποία ο Ασάνζ θα μπορούσε θεωρητικά να αντιμετωπίσει ακόμη και την θανατική ποινή.

Τα διαφορετικά επίπεδα ανάλυσης, όμως, αυτής της εικόνας του Τζούλιαν Ασάνζ με χειροπέδες, έξω από το κτίριο της πρεσβείας του Ισημερινού, δεν σταματούν εδώ. Είναι η αποτύπωση σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή του τέλους του διεθνούς δικαίου, όπως το γνωρίσαμε τους τελευταίους αιώνες.

Καταρχήν, σηματοδοτεί την κατάρρευση κάθε έννοιας κράτους δικαίου για το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Οι ανεξάρτητοι εμπειρογνώμονες της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα είχαν προειδοποιήσει από το 2018 ότι η συνεχιζόμενη κράτηση του Ασάνζ παραβιάζει τον νόμο και τις υποχρεώσεις του βρετανικού κράτους απέναντι στο διεθνές δίκαιο. Τώρα, με τη σύλληψη του Ασάνζ φτάνουμε στο σημείο ένα κράτος (οι ΗΠΑ) να απαιτούν και να πετυχαίνουν την παράνομη σύλληψη ενός ξένου εκδότη και δημοσιογράφου σε μια τρίτη χώρα. Το βρετανικό κράτος είχε να βρεθεί σε τέτοιο επίπεδο υποτέλειας απέναντι στις ΗΠΑ από την εποχή που ο Τόνι Μπλερ παπαγάλιζε τις αποφάσεις του Τζορτζ Μπους διατάζοντας την εισβολή και κατάληψη του Ιράκ.

«Η σύλληψη του Ασάνζ», έγραψε ο ερευνητής δημοσιογράφος Τζέρεμι Σκάχιλ, «σημαίνει ότι κάποιοι διάβηκαν τον Ρουβίκωνα. Και όταν διαβαίνεις τον Ρουβίκωνα, όπως έκανε ο Ιούλιος Καίσαρας στέλνοντας τον στρατό στη Ρώμη, είναι η στιγμή που η Δημοκρατία (Republic) μετατρέπεται σε Imperium».

H ίδια εικόνα, όμως, της σύλληψης αποτυπώνει και τις νέες ισορροπίες που η Ουάσιγκτον κατάφερε να επιβάλλει στην λεγόμενη πίσω αυλή της — τη Νότια Αμερική. Η απόφαση του προέδρου του Ισημερινού Λένιν Μορένο, να παραδώσει τον Ασάνζ στους δήμιους του αποτελεί, σύμφωνα με τον πρώην πρόεδρο της χώρας Ραφαέλ Κορέα, ένα «έγκλημα το οποίο η ανθρωπότητα δεν θα ξεχάσει ποτέ». Ο Μορένο, εξηγούσε ο Κορέα «είναι ο μεγαλύτερος προδότης στην ιστορία της Λατινικής Αμερικής». Και δεν είναι ο μόνος. Η μετατροπή του Ισημερινού από ένα υπερήφανο κράτος που αμφισβητούσε τις εντολές του ΔΝΤ σε ένα κράτος δορυφόρο της Ουάσιγκτον είναι ενδεικτική για το νέο σκηνικό που διαμορφώνεται στην περιοχή.

Πέρα και πάνω από οτιδήποτε άλλο όμως, η εικόνα ενός εκδότη, ο οποίος οδηγείται με χειροπέδες στο δικαστήριο, σημαίνει το οριστικό τέλος της ελευθερίας του Τύπου για τις κοινωνίες της Δύσης. Ακόμη και η Αμερικανική Ένωση για τις Πολιτικές Ελευθερίες (ACLU), σημειώνει τώρα ότι η αντισυνταγματική δίωξη από τις ΗΠΑ ενός ξένου εκδότη «ανοίγει τον δρόμο για την έναρξη ποινικών διώξεων εναντίον άλλων μέσων ενημέρωσης» στην Αμερική και αποτελεί «επικίνδυνο προηγούμενο για τη δίωξη και Αμερικανών δημοσιογράφων».

Είναι προφανές, ότι η σύλληψη του Ασάνζ αποτελεί κλιμάκωση του πογκρόμ που εγκαινίασε ο Μπαράκ Ομπάμα και συνεχίζει ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ εναντίον της ελευθεροτυπίας και των λεγόμενων whistleblowers σε όλο τον κόσμο. Μόνο τους τελευταίους μήνες έχουμε την στοχοποίηση μικρών ανεξάρτητων site που ασκούσαν κριτική στην αμερικανική εξωτερική πολιτική, την επιστροφή στη φυλακή της Τσέλσι Μάνινγκ, που έδωσε στα Wikileaks τα 750.000 διαβαθμισμένα έγγραφα αμερικανικών πρεσβειών και τώρα τη σύλληψη ενός ανθρώπου που έγινε σύμβολο της ελευθερίας του Τύπου.

Το μήνυμα είναι σαφές: Όποιος τολμά να αποκαλύπτει εγκλήματα πολέμου και εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας, που πραγματοποιούν οι ΗΠΑ, είναι καταδικασμένος να περάσει το υπόλοιπο της ζωής του στη φυλακή ή την απομόνωση. Μόνο που ο Ασάνζ, με το παράδειγμά του δείχνει ότι θα υπάρχουν πάντα άνθρωποι τόσο γενναίοι ώστε να τα βάζουν και με τα ισχυρότερα imperium.
