In his 1956 book "The Power Elite," New Left sociologist C. Wright Mills detailed how decision-making in the United States is not democratic; it is determined by (1) Wall Street capitalists and large corporations, (2) the Pentagon and military-industrial complex, and (3) the corrupt political class.
