Στις εθνικές των οδηγών με τα ρομπότ

Εκατομμύρια οδηγοί νταλίκας σε όλο τον κόσμο θεωρούνται το επόμενο «είδος προς εξαφάνιση» της εργατικής τάξης, καθώς αρκετοί προβλέπουν την αντικατάστασή τους από φορτηγά χωρίς οδηγούς. Ακόμη μια φορά, όμως, ο εχθρός δεν βρίσκεται στις μηχανές.


Σαράντα χρόνια συμπληρώνονται σε λίγους μήνες από την κυκλοφορία της ταινίας «Κονβόι» του Σαμ Πέκινπα – μία από τις ελάχιστες παραγωγές που μεταφέρουν στη μεγάλη οθόνη όχι το περιεχόμενο ενός βιβλίου αλλά ενός τραγουδιού. Το ομότιτλο «Convoy», του Bill Fries, διηγείται την «εξέγερση» μιας ομάδας οδηγών νταλίκας, οι οποίοι διασχίζουν τις ΗΠΑ, από τη Δυτική έως την Ανατολική Ακτή, χωρίς να σταματήσουν σε ελέγχους και μπλόκα της αστυνομίας και της εθνοφρουράς.

Παρά το γεγονός ότι το τραγούδι και η ταινία αποτελούν δυο εύπεπτα προϊόντα της νέας αμερικανικής κάντρι και της σχολής των αντι-ουέστερν, στην οποία ειδικεύεται ο Σαμ Πέκινπα, καταφέρνουν να αποτυπώσουν τις επιπτώσεις της πρώτης μεγάλης κρίσης του καπιταλιστικού συστήματος μετά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.

Οι οδηγοί εξεγείρονται για το νέο όριο ταχύτητας των 55 μιλίων (περίπου 90 χιλιόμετρα), που έχει επιβληθεί μετά την πετρελαϊκή κρίση του 1973, όταν οι ΗΠΑ προσπαθούσαν να περιορίσουν την κατανάλωση καυσίμων.

Παράλληλα, όμως, οι νταλικέρηδες, προκειμένου να αυξήσουν λίγο το μεροκάματο, σκίζουν και τα λεγόμενα swindle sheets, τα ημερολόγια του φορτηγού, στα οποία ήταν υποχρεωμένοι να καταγράφουν τις ώρες οδήγησης, ώστε να μην υπερβαίνουν το ανώτατο όριο που είχε επιβάλει η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση. Το «Κονβόι», λοιπόν, ως τραγούδι και ως ταινία, συλλαμβάνει τα τελευταία ξεσπάσματα του ατίθασου αυθορμητισμού που χαρακτηρίζει τους Αμερικανούς οδηγούς νταλίκας, καθώς ο κλάδος τους βιώνει πρώτος την κρίση της δεκαετίας του 1970.

Παραδόξως ο μύθος του ατίθασου καουμπόι της ασφάλτου θα διατηρηθεί και τις επόμενες δεκαετίες (όπως βλέπουμε στην απαράδεκτη ταινία «Over the Top» με τον Σιλβέστερ Σταλόνε), παρά το γεγονός ότι οι οδηγοί χάνουν τη μία μετά την άλλη τις μάχες με την κυβέρνηση και κυρίως με τις μεγάλες εταιρείες μεταφορών.

Με την ανάπτυξη των υπολογιστών, οι εταιρείες αρχίζουν να καταγράφουν όχι μόνο τις ώρες οδήγησης και την ταχύτητα του οχήματος, αλλά ακόμη και το πόσο συχνά και με πόση ένταση φρενάρουν και επιταχύνουν. Τα φορτηγά και οι οδηγοί τους γίνονται γρανάζια μιας γιγαντιαίας βιομηχανίας 700 δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων, που μεταφέρει το 70% των προϊόντων στο εσωτερικό των ΗΠΑ.

Σε αυτή την αλυσίδα, όμως, οι οδηγοί αποτελούν τον αδύναμο κρίκο. Οι μισθοί τους (μαζί με τους φορτοεκφορτωτές και άλλα βοηθητικά επαγγέλματα) ξεπερνούν το 75% του συνολικού κόστους των οδικών μεταφορών. Αν προσθέσει κανείς σε αυτό το «ελάττωμα» και το γεγονός ότι χρειάζεται να κάνουν στάσεις για να ξεκουράζονται και να κοιμούνται αλλά και ότι συχνά εμπλέκονται σε ατυχήματα που επιβαρύνουν την αμερικανική οικονομία με κόστος δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων, εύκολα καταλαβαίνει γιατί κάποιοι θα ήθελαν να τους αντικαταστήσουν με ένα ρομπότ το συντομότερο δυνατό.

Η πρώτη επιτυχημένη προσπάθεια έγινε ακριβώς πριν από έναν χρόνο, όταν ένα 18τροχο φορτηγό της εταιρείας OTTO, την οποία εξαγόρασε η UBER, μετέφερε 45.000 χιλιάδες τενεκεδάκια μπίρας Budweiser (προσοχή στον συμβολισμό) σε απόσταση 200 χιλιομέτρων. Την ίδια περίοδο ένα κονβόι φορτηγών χωρίς οδηγούς διέσχισε την Ευρώπη σε ένα πειραματικό πρόγραμμα που πραγματοποίησαν από κοινού η DAF, η Daimler, η Iveco και η MAN.

Η ανησυχία είναι έκδηλη σε αρκετά σωματεία επαγγελματιών οδηγών σε όλο τον κόσμο. Οι περίφημοι teamsters, το συνδικάτο των οδηγών στις ΗΠΑ, δίνει τώρα μάχη με τον χρόνο ώστε να μην περάσουν από το Κογκρέσο ρυθμίσεις που θα επιταχύνουν την καθιέρωση των οχημάτων χωρίς οδηγούς στα πολύ μεγάλα φορτηγά.

Μήπως η λύση θα ήταν μια πραγματική, αυτή τη φορά, εξέγερση των οδηγών; Μήπως ένα νέο κίνημα από Λουδίτες (βιομηχανικοί εργάτες που έσπαγαν τις μηχανές των εργοστασίων στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα) βρίσκεται προ των πυλών; Ισως. Αρκεί οι οδηγοί, όπως και οι παρεξηγημένοι Λουδίτες, να γνωρίζουν ότι ο πραγματικός τους εχθρός δεν είναι τα ρομπότ και οι μηχανές. Οι Αμερικανοί νταλικέρηδες, έγραφε πρόσφατα ο «Guardian», κέρδιζαν 38.000 δολάρια το 1980. Προσαρμοσμένο στον πληθωρισμό, το ποσό αντιστοιχεί σήμερα σε 114.000 δολάρια, αλλά οι οδηγοί κερδίζουν μόλις 41.000 δολάρια. Αυτά τα χρήματα δεν τους τα στέρησε κανένα ρομπότ.

Το σπάσιμο των μηχανών, εξηγούσε παλαιότερα ο μαρξιστής ιστορικός Ερικ Χομπσμπάουμ, ήταν μια μορφή «συλλογικής διαπραγμάτευσης διά εξεγέρσεως». Και ήταν εξίσου αποτελεσματική με κάθε άλλη μορφή συλλογικής διαπραγμάτευσης. Ποτέ όμως ο εχθρός δεν ήταν τα μηχανήματα και η τεχνολογία.
