Ποιος κυβερνά αυτό το Facebook;

Η απόφαση του ιδρυτή του facebook να συνεργαστεί με τις αμερικανικές αρχές στο κυνήγι Ρώσων χάκερ αποτελεί ένα σημείο καμπής στην πολιτική του μεγαλύτερου μέσου κοινωνικής δικτύωσης στον πλανήτη. Ίσως είναι η στιγμή που μπαίνει επισήμως στον πολιτικό στίβο.

Υπάρχουν δύο πράγματα που συνηθίζουν να κάνουν οι ένοικοι του Λευκού Οίκου εδώ και αιώνες: μια μεγάλη περιοδεία σε όλες τις αμερικανικές Πολιτείες πριν από τις εκλογές και ένα διάγγελμα προς τον αμερικανικό λαό μετά την εκλογή τους. Ο Μάρκ Ζούκερμπεργκ, ο δημιουργός του facebook, τα έκανε και τα δύο.

Τον τελευταίο χρόνο επισκέπτεται όλες τις Πολιτείες των ΗΠΑ και φωτογραφίζεται με αγρότες, εργάτες, ιερείς αλλά ακόμη και τοξικοεξαρτημένα άτομα, σε μια προσωπική «προεκλογική εκστρατεία» χωρίς αντίπαλο. Και ύστερα ήρθε η μεγάλη στιγμή να απευθυνθεί urbi et orbi στα περίπου δύο δισεκατομμύρια «πιστούς» που διατηρούν ενεργούς λογαριασμούς στο facebook.

Αφορμή αποτέλεσαν οι καταγγελίες ότι το γνωστό μέσο κοινωνικής δικτύωσης επέτρεψε τη δημοσίευση πληρωμένων καταχωρίσεων από Ρώσους χρήστες, που υποτίθεται είχαν στόχο να επηρεάσουν το αποτέλεσμα των εκλογών. Παρά το γεγονός ότι αρχικά το facebook ανακοίνωσε πως δεν είχε εντοπίσει καμία ύποπτη ενέργεια, όταν οι πιέσεις άρχισαν να αυξάνονται, ο Ζούκερμπεργκ δήλωσε στο «διάγγελμά» του ότι θα προσφέρει σε επιτροπή του Κογκρέσου στοιχεία για περίπου 3.000 σχετικές διαφημίσεις που καταχωρήθηκαν στις σελίδες του. Όπως εξηγούσε βέβαια, ο ερευνητής και δημοσιογράφος Μαξ Μπλούμενθαλ, και αυτός ο «θησαυρός» αποδείχθηκε άνθρακας.

Ανάμεσα στις διαφημίσεις περιλαμβάνονταν εκατοντάδες άσχετα θέματα (ακόμη και απλές φωτογραφίες με κουτάβια), ενώ το 65% των μηνυμάτων είχε καταχωριστεί μετά τις προεδρικές εκλογές στις ΗΠΑ και προφανώς δεν θα είχαν καταφέρει να επηρεάσουν το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Η είδηση λοιπόν, δεν ήταν το περιεχόμενο των διαφημίσεων, αλλά το γεγονός ότι ο Ζούκερμπεργκ δέχθηκε να συνεργαστεί με τις αμερικανικές αρχές προσφέροντας στοιχεία των χρηστών του – πολιτική την οποία ακολούθησαν αμέσως μετά και η google και το twitter.

Για αρκετούς το άτυπο διάγγελμα αποτέλεσε μια έκφραση «υποταγής» στο βαθύ κράτος των ΗΠΑ και κυρίως στο αναγεννημένο στρατόπεδο των νεοσυντηρητικών, οι οποίοι με επικεφαλής τη Χίλαρι Κλίντον έχουν εξαπολύσει ένα νέο κυνήγι μαγισσών εναντίον της Μόσχας. Για άλλους ήταν απλώς μια κίνηση συμβιβασμού που απέδειξε ότι ο Ζούκερμπεργκ μπορεί να κινηθεί με άνεση στα βαθιά νερά της αμερικανικής πολιτικής σκηνής.

Σε κάθε περίπτωση το περιστατικό έφερε και πάλι στο προσκήνιο την τρομακτική ισχύ που έχει αποκτήσει το facebook στην ούτως η άλλως ολιγοπωλιακή αγορά των μέσων κοινωνικής δικτύωσης. «Μέσα στον επόμενο χρόνο οι χρήστες του facebook αναμένεται να ξεπεράσουν σε αριθμό τους χριστιανούς», ανέφερε προ ημερών το αμερικανικό δίκτυο CNBC – ένας ομολογουμένως περίεργος τρόπος να εξηγήσεις ότι σύντομα το ένα τρίτο των κατοίκων του πλανήτη θα χρησιμοποιεί τουλάχιστον μία φορά τον μήνα την πλατφόρμα του Ζούκερμπεργκ.

Η υπόθεση των ρωσικών διαφημίσεων όμως, αποτέλεσε αφορμή για μια ακόμη πιο ενδιαφέρουσα συζήτηση. Οι περισσότεροι από όσους άσκησαν κριτική στην απόφαση του Ζούκερμπεργκ τον κατηγόρησαν ότι παρεμβαίνει στη λειτουργία των αλγορίθμων που καθορίζουν ποιες ειδήσεις, διαφημίσεις και μηνύματα φίλων θα βλέπει κάθε χρήστης στον «τοίχο» του. Η άποψη αυτή όμως υπονοεί ότι οι αλγόριθμοι αποτελούν κάποιου είδους αντικειμενικό (και κυρίως απολίτικο) μηχανισμό.

Υπό μια έννοια, εξηγούσε ο συγγραφέας Φράνκλιν Φόερ στο νέο του βιβλίο με τίτλο World Without Mind, ο μύθος του αντικειμενικού αλγόριθμου αποτελεί τη σύγχρονη έκφανση μιας τεχνοκρατικής αντίληψης που έκανε για πρώτη φορά την εμφάνισή της στην Ευρώπη του 18ου αιώνα στα γραπτά συγγραφέων όπως ο Ανρί Σεν-Σιμόν.

Γνωστός ως ο ουτοπιστής πρόδρομος του «επιστημονικού σοσιαλισμού», ο Σεν-Σιμόν οραματιζόταν μια κοινωνία στην οποία τα συμφέροντα του διεφθαρμένου παλαιού καθεστώτος αλλά και το χάος που μπορεί να επιφέρει στην κοινωνία η δύναμη του «όχλου» θα έδιναν τη θέση τους σε ένα σώμα τεχνοκρατών μηχανικών που θα ρύθμιζαν τη λειτουργία της κοινωνίας με μοναδικό γνώμονα την επιστήμη. Αντί για τους φιλοσόφους στην πολιτική ή τους φιλοσοφούντες πολιτικούς, το νέο όραμα προέβλεπε θέσεις μόνο για μηχανικούς.

Οι φαινομενικά ουδέτεροι αλγόριθμοι της σημερινής εποχής, υποστηρίζει ο Φράνκλιν Φόερ, έρχονται να αντικαταστήσουν την ουτοπία και τον μύθο των πρώτων τεχνοκρατών. Στην πραγματικότητα, όπως εξηγεί ο ίδιος πολύ διεξοδικά, κάθε αλγόριθμος κρύβει τεράστιες ποσότητες πολιτικής, αλλά και πολιτικής οικονομίας ανάλογα με τις επιδιώξεις των δημιουργών του.

Ίσως ο επόμενος πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ να εκλεγεί από έναν αλγόριθμο – αυτόν του Μαρκ Ζούκερμπεργκ.

A response to misinformation on Nicaragua: it was a coup, not a ‘massacre’

There is so much misinformation in mainstream corporate media about recent events in Nicaragua that it is a pity that Mary Ellsberg’s article for Pulse has added to it with a seemingly leftish critique. Ellsberg claims that recent articles, including from this website, often “ paint a picture of the crisis in Nicaragua that is dangerously misleading. ” Unfortunately, her own article does just that. It looks at the situation entirely from the perspective of those opposing Daniel Ortega’s government while whitewashing their malevolent behavior and downplaying the levels of US support they have relied on.
