Plan A:
knowing Hillary Clinton's bad shape and popularity due to wars,
scandals and corruption, start promoting the false alternative Donald
Trump against the real alternative Bernie Sanders.
Plan B: if
Sanders' popularity remains dangerously high, start a war from inside
the DNC to eliminate him in the primaries.
Plan C
(probably the most difficult): if plan B doesn't work, keep balances.
Superficially continue to fight Trump while at the same time promote
him behind the scenes and use full force of the mainstream media to
discredit Sanders even more, making him appear as a 'non-serious'
solution for the country.
Plan D: if
plan C doesn't work use the full force of the US deep state against
the new president, Bernie Sanders, to force him obey, as much as
possible, to the establishment agenda.
In the end,
the establishment didn't have to go further than Plan B ...

PLAN B. The usual: hedging their bets: Fund the Republicans as well, especially Jeb Bush war-monger with $100,000,000 war chest
PLAN C. The other usual: Fund more the one Republican war-monger.
All plans assume Bernie wasn't 'in the bag' for the establishment. I think that is incorrect. He knew he was supposed to take a fall for Hillary at some point. Does anyone really think they'd let that old geezer win? He was the Ross Perot for the under 35 year olds to get them all riled up over 'free' tuition and no more wars. Sanders has been around the block too many times to be an 'outsider'. A true outsider wouldn't get his name on the ballot anyway.

I agree in regards to Sanders. He is a showboat faux progressive who is happy to be the Senator for Lockheed and Vermont Yankee. He had no chance of winning because he did not wish the job just the accolades and bully pulpit.
