Τσόρτσιλ: ήρωας ή ανθρωπόμορφο κτήνος;

Η ταινία «Η πιο σκοτεινή ώρα» υποτίθεται ότι θα έριχνε φως στην (όχι και τόσο δεδομένη) απόφαση του Τσόρτσιλ να πολεμήσει τη ναζιστική Γερμανία. Πότε θα δούμε όμως τον Ουίνστον Τσόρτσιλ στον ρόλο του πραγματικού εγκληματία πολέμου, του οπαδού της ευγονικής και του λάτρη του Χίτλερ και του Μουσολίνι;

Οταν ο Ινδός πολιτικός (και παρά λίγο γενικός γραμματέας του ΟΗΕ) Σάσι Ταρούρ συνέκρινε πριν από μερικούς μήνες τον Ουίνστον Τσόρτσιλ με τον Αδόλφο Χίτλερ, λέγοντας ότι «έχουν την ίδια ποσότητα αίματος στα χέρια τους», αρκετοί τον κατηγόρησαν ότι ζητούσε λίγη δημοσιότητα για το βιβλίο Inglorious Empire σχετικά με τα εγκλήματα της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας στην Ινδία.

Ο Ταρούρ αναφερόταν μεταξύ άλλων στον λιμό της Βεγγάλης που προκλήθηκε από την πολιτική καμένης γης της Βρετανίας και στοίχισε τη ζωή 4,3 εκατομμυρίων ανθρώπων. Σύμφωνα με τον Ινδό πολιτικό, το 1943 ο Τσόρτσιλ έδωσε εντολή στις εφοδιοπομπές που έφταναν από την Αυστραλία να μην αφήσουν τρόφιμα στην Ινδία και να τα μεταφέρουν προληπτικά στην Ευρώπη για το ενδεχόμενο μιας μελλοντικής κατάληψης της Ελλάδας και της Γιουγκοσλαβίας.

Οι φωτογραφίες των σκελετωμένων πτωμάτων, που κάλυπταν τους δρόμους της Βεγγάλης και κατασπαράσσονταν από γύπες, θα έπρεπε να συνοδεύουν κάθε αναφορά στον Βρετανό «εθνάρχη» με τον ίδιο τρόπο που τα εγκαταλελειμμένα πτώματα στην Αθήνα της Κατοχής και οι σωροί θυμάτων του ολοκαυτώματος θα συνοδεύουν για πάντα την Ιστορία της Γερμανίας στον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.

Ο Σάσι Ταρούρ δεν ήταν ούτε ο πρώτος ούτε ο τελευταίος που τολμούσε να συγκρίνει δημόσια τον Τσόρτσιλ με τον Χίτλερ – δυο ανθρώπους που θα μπορούσαν να είναι σύμμαχοι στην κατάκτηση του πλανήτη εάν τα γεωπολιτικά συμφέροντα των αστικών τάξεων που εκπροσωπούσαν δεν τους έφερναν σε αντίπαλα στρατόπεδα. Θυμάμαι τον συγγραφέα Ταρίκ Αλί, στα γυρίσματα του ντοκιμαντέρ ΦΑΣΙΣΜΟΣ Α.Ε να μας διαβάζει αποσπάσματα από τις διθυραμβικές κριτικές του Τσόρτσιλ για το βιβλίο ο «Αγών μου» του Χίτλερ αλλά και τον θαυμασμό του για τον Μουσολίνι.

«Αν η Βρετανία ηττούνταν σε έναν πόλεμο θα ευχόμουν να βρίσκαμε έναν Χίτλερ για να μας επαναφέρει στη θέση που μας αρμόζει στη διεθνή σκηνή» έγραφε ο Τσόρτσιλ. Μάλιστα το 1932, ο ίδιος επιχείρησε να συναντήσει δυο φορές το πολιτικό του ίνδαλμα στο ξενοδοχείο «Ρεγκίνα» του Μονάχου. Ο Χίτλερ όμως τον έστησε και στα δυο ραντεβού.

Κι όμως, ο Βρετανός πολιτικός θα είχε να διδάξει και να συμβουλεύσει τόσα πολλά τον Γερμανό γενοκτόνο. Θα μπορούσε να του μιλήσει για τα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης και εξόντωσης που πρώτοι οι Βρετανοί δημιούργησαν στον δεύτερο πόλεμο των Μπόερ – και τα οποία ο ίδιος εξυμνούσε ως δημοσιογράφος στα κείμενα που έστελνε στην εφημερίδα Morning Post.

Θα μπορούσε επίσης να του μιλήσει για την ανάγκη εξόντωσης των πιο αδύναμων μελών μιας κοινωνίας, τα οποία μολύνουν με το γενετικό τους υλικό τα ανώτερα στρώματα. Η σημερινή Βρετανία προσπαθεί να ξεχάσει ότι ο Τσόρτσιλ ήταν φανατικός οπαδός της ευγονικής.

Το 1912 τον συναντάμε στο διεθνές συνέδριο ευγονικής, που διοργάνωνε στο Λονδίνο η Βρετανική Εταιρεία Ευγονικής, με θέμα την ανάγκη στείρωσης των «κοινωνικών σκουπιδιών» – των ανθρώπων δηλαδή που θεωρούνταν διανοητικά κατώτεροι από τα μέλη των ανώτερων βρετανικών τάξεων. «Η αναπαραγωγή των διανοητικά ασθενέστερων αποτελεί τρομακτικό κίνδυνο για τη φυλή μας» έγραφε ο Τσόρτσιλ στον τότε πρωθυπουργό της Βρετανίας καλώντας τον να αναλάβει άμεσα δράση, όπως πρόσταζε η «ηθική» της ευγονικής που κέρδιζε έδαφος στην Αγγλία και τις ΗΠΑ.

Η απέχθεια με την οποία αντιμετώπιζε ο Τσόρτσιλ τη ζωή όσων θεωρούσε φυλετικά, εθνικά και ταξικά κατώτερους ή όσους βρίσκονταν απέναντί του στις κρίσιμες πολιτικές και στρατιωτικές του μάχες, είναι παροιμιώδης. Αναφερόμενος στους Παλαιστίνιους και στην εθνοκάθαρση που επιχειρούσαν εναντίον τους οι πρώτοι Εβραίοι έποικοι με την έγκριση της Βρετανίας έλεγε ότι ένα σκυλί που ζει σε στάβλο δεν μπορεί να ισχυρίζεται ότι είναι ιδιοκτήτης του στάβλου.

Παρόμοιες εκφράσεις χρησιμοποιούσε και για τους Ινδιάνους, που σφαγιάστηκαν στις ΗΠΑ. Οσο για τους Ινδούς, που ο ίδιος οδήγησε στον λιμό με μια του υπογραφή, σημείωνε: «Μισώ τους Ινδούς. Είναι κτήνη με μια κτηνώδη θρησκεία. Οι ίδιοι προκάλεσαν τον λιμό αφού γεννοβολάνε σαν κουνέλια».

Αν προσθέσει κανείς και τη χρήση χημικών όπλων, που ο ίδιος διέταξε σε πειραματικό επίπεδο στη Μέση Ανατολή, την εισβολή στην Ελλάδα και την πυροδότηση του εμφυλίου πολέμου αλλά και δεκάδες ακόμη εγκλήματα πολέμου και εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας θα αισθανθεί φρίκη για τους ηγέτες που εξακολουθούμε να αγιοποιούμε σαν προστάτες της ελευθερίας και της δημοκρατίας.

Ισως γιατί αυτό που μας μαθαίνουν να αποκαλούμε «δημοκρατία» και «ελευθερία» δημιουργήθηκε από ανθρώπους σαν τον Τσόρτσιλ.
