Η Ουάσιγκτον γυρνάει την πλάτη στους Κούρδους μαχητές με κινητοποίηση ισχυρών λόμπι από την Τουρκία

Με το άρθρο του Turkey’s Political Influence Felt as Washington Turns Its Back on Kurds Fighting ISIS, στην ιστοσελίδα TheIntercept, ο Lee Fang περιγράφει την αλλαγή στάσης της Ουάσιγκτον απέναντι στον πιο αξιόμαχο εχθρό των τρομοκρατών του ISIS, δηλαδή των Κούρδων ανταρτών, υπό την πίεση τμήματος του συντηρητικού Αμερικανικού λόμπι που τροφοδοτείται από την Τουρκία.

Όπως αναφέρει χαρακτηριστικά ο Fang, η Τουρκία χρησιμοποιεί ένα λόμπι που αποτελείται από ισχυρά ονόματα που υπήρξαν κυβερνητικοί αξιωματούχοι στην Ουάσιγκτον, όπως οι πρώην Δημοκρατικοί νομοθέτες Dick Gephardt και Al Wynn, ο πρώην Ρεπουμπλικάνος γερουσιαστής Tim Hutchinson, ο πρώην διευθυντής της CIA Porter Goss και ο πρώην αξιωματούχος του Λευκού Οίκου Denny Hastert. Στο λόμπι συμπεριλαμβάνονται η νομική εταιρία Greenberg Traurig και η εταιρία μιντιακής στρατηγικής Goldin Solutions.

Όπως αποκαλύπτεται στο άρθρο, το μισθωμένο από την Τουρκία Αμερικανικό λόμπι άρχισε να εργάζεται ώστε να εμποδίσει την Αμερικανική στρατιωτική βοήθεια προς τους Κούρδους μαχητές, ήδη από το περασμένο έτος.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι η Τουρκία, ταυτόχρονα με την παραχώρηση των αεροπορικών της βάσεων στους Αμερικανούς προκειμένου να επιχειρούν εναντίον του ISIS, έσπασε την εκεχειρία με τους Κούρδους αντάρτες. Έτσι, αντί να καταδικάσει τις επιθέσεις κατά των Κούρδων, η κυβέρνηση Ομπάμα επαίνεσε την Τουρκία για την παραχώρηση των βάσεων.

Ορισμένες εταιρίες δημοσίων σχέσεων και ορισμένοι δικηγόροι βοήθησαν στο να προσφέρουν χορηγίες για πολυτελή ταξίδια Αμερικανών πολιτικών και δημοσιογράφων στην Τουρκία.

Γίνεται επίσης μια μεγάλη μάχη σχετικά με μια νομοθεσία που θα επέτρεπε στον Ομπάμα να παρακάμψει την Ιρακινή κυβέρνηση και να προμηθεύσει απευθείας τους Κούρδους του Ιράκ με βαρέα όπλα και τεθωρακισμένα προκειμένου να αντιμετωπίσουν το ISIS. Αμερικανοί αξιωματούχοι προώθησαν το νομοσχέδιο τον περασμένο Νοέμβριο και εκ νέου τον Μάρτιο, ώστε να δώσουν τη δυνατότητα στην Αμερικανική κυβέρνηση να εξοπλίσει τους Κούρδους. Όπως είναι φυσικό, μπαίνουν σοβαρά εμπόδια στο νομοσχέδιο από το λόμπι που χρηματοδοτεί η Τουρκία.

Στις αρχές του καλοκαιριού, η Γερουσία απέρριψε ένα παρόμοιο νομοσχέδιο για τον εξοπλισμό των Κούρδων ενάντια στο ISIS, με την δικαιολογία ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να συμβάλλει στη διάσπαση της Ιρακινής κυβέρνησης.
