Μαρτυρίες επιζώντων για μαζική απώλεια ζωών στην τελευταία τραγωδία στη Μεσόγειο

Oμάδα της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες (Υ.Α.) επισκέφτηκε και μίλησε την Τρίτη με επιζώντες πιθανόν μιας από τις χειρότερες τραγωδίες που αφορά πρόσφυγες και μετανάστες τον τελευταίο χρόνο. Εάν επιβεβαιωθεί, σχεδόν 500 άνθρωποι μπορεί να έχασαν τη ζωή τους όταν ένα μεγάλο σκάφος ναυάγησε στη Μεσόγειο σε άγνωστη τοποθεσία μεταξύ Λιβύης και Ιταλίας. Οι 41 επιζώντες (37 άνδρες, τρεις γυναίκες και ένα τρίχρονο παιδί) διασώθηκαν από ένα εμπορικό πλοίο και μεταφέρθηκαν στην Καλαμάτα στις 16 Απριλίου. Ανάμεσα στους επιζώντες ήταν 23 άτομα από τη Σομαλία, 11 από την Αιθιοπία, 6 από την Αίγυπτο και 1 από το Σουδάν.

Οι επιζώντες είπαν στα μέλη της Υ.Α. ότι συνολικά 100-200 άτομα αναχώρησαν την περασμένη βδομάδα από μια περιοχή κοντά στο Tobruk στη Λιβύη με σκάφος 30 μέτρων.

Αφού έπλεαν στα ανοιχτά για αρκετές ώρες, οι διακινητές που έλεγχαν το σκάφος επιχείρησαν να μεταφέρουν τους επιβάτες σε ένα μεγαλύτερο σκάφος, στο οποίο ήδη επέβαιναν εκατοντάδες άνθρωποι σε συνθήκες πολύ μεγάλου συνωστισμού. Κατά τη διάρκεια της μεταφοράς, το μεγαλύτερο σκάφος ανατράπηκε και βυθίστηκε.

Στους 41 επιζώντες περιλαμβάνονται άτομα που δεν είχαν ακόμα επιβιβαστεί στο μεγαλύτερο σκάφος καθώς και ορισμένοι που κατάφεραν να κολυμπήσουν πίσω στο μικρότερο σκάφος. Έπλεαν στη θάλασσα για τρεις μέρες πριν εντοπιστούν και διασωθούν στις 16 Απριλίου.

Η Υ.Α. επισκέφτηκε τους επιζώντες στο στάδιο της Καλαμάτας όπου στεγάζονται προσωρινά από τις τοπικές αρχές, ενώ παράλληλα διεξάγονται οι απαραίτητες αστυνομικές διαδικασίες.

Η Υ.Α. συνεχίζει να απευθύνει έκκληση για ενίσχυση των νόμιμων οδών για την πρόσβαση προσφύγων και μεταναστών στην Ευρώπη, περιλαμβάνοντας μεταξύ άλλων προγράμματα επανεγκατάστασης και εισδοχής για ανθρωπιστικούς λόγους, οικογενειακή επανένωση, ιδιωτικές χορηγίες και χορήγηση θεωρήσεων εισόδου για σπουδές και εργασία για τους πρόσφυγες. Οι νόμιμες αυτές οδοί θα βοηθήσουν στο να μειωθεί η ζήτηση για δίκτυα διακινητών και τα επικίνδυνα παράτυπα θαλάσσια ταξίδια.
