Είναι επίσης εξαιρετικά χρήσιμοι στο να διαιρούν το εκλογικό σώμα και να το οδηγούν μακριά από τους πολιτικούς που αποτελούν πραγματική απειλή για το κατεστημένο.

Συχνά προωθούνται μέσω κάποιων επιφανειακών χαρακτηριστικών και συμβολισμών που δεν έχουν καμία απολύτως σχέση με την ουσία των πολιτικών που πρόκειται να εφαρμόσουν, έτσι ώστε να ξεγελαστούν οι ψηφοφόροι και να πειστούν πως πράγματι ψηφίζουν κάτι καινούργιο. Στην πραγματικότητα, η αποστολή των πολιτικών αυτού του τύπου, είναι να εξασφαλίσουν την κυριαρχία του κατεστημένου και να προχωρήσουν στην εφαρμογή όσων αυτό επιτάσσει.
