Bullshit Jobs: Σε δουλειά να βρισκόμαστε

Τo 1930 ο οικονομολόγος Τζον Μέιναρντ Κέινς προέβλεπε ότι μέχρι το τέλος του αιώνα η ανάπτυξη της τεχνολογίας θα επιτρέπει στους πολίτες των καπιταλιστικά αναπτυγμένων κοινωνιών να εργάζονται 15 ώρες την εβδομάδα. Σήμερα, καθώς ακροδεξιά και νεοφιλελεύθερα καθεστώτα της Ε.Ε. προωθούν τη 12ωρη ημερήσια εργασία, κάποιοι αναρωτιούνται: Και τι δουλειά θα κάνουμε 12 ώρες τη μέρα;

Στο London School of Economics, όπου εργάζεται ο καθηγητής Ανθρωπολογίας Ντέιβιντ Γκρέμπερ, υπήρχε ένας μαραγκός, που έφτιαχνε τα γραφεία, τις βιβλιοθήκες και άλλες εγκαταστάσεις του κτιρίου. Οι ανάγκες, όμως, των διδασκόντων και του διοικητικού προσωπικού ήταν τόσο μεγάλες ώστε έπρεπε να περιμένουν σε λίστα αναμονής για να εξυπηρετηθούν.

Βλέποντας τα παράπονα να αυξάνονται, η διοίκηση του πανεπιστημίου προσέλαβε έναν υπάλληλο με αρμοδιότητα να κατευνάζει την οργή των άλλων υπαλλήλων. Αυτό που κανένας δεν σκέφτηκε ήταν ότι το πρόβλημα θα είχε λυθεί εάν στη θέση του συγκεκριμένου υπαλλήλου είχαν προσλάβει δεύτερο μαραγκό.

Παρατηρήσεις σαν και αυτές οδήγησαν τον Γκράμπερ στη θεωρία των λεγόμενων Bullshit Jobs, την οποία άρχισε να αναπτύσσει στις αρχές της δεκαετίας. Στα ελληνικά ο όρος έχει αποδοθεί σαν «ηλίθιες δουλειές» ή «κωλοδουλειές», αν και όπως θα δούμε στη συνέχεια ο δεύτερος όρος προκαλεί σύγχυση, καθώς παραπέμπει στον όρο «shit jobs». Bullshit Jobs, σύμφωνα με τον Γκράμπερ «είναι εργασίες τόσο ανούσιες, ή ακόμη και καταστροφικές, ώστε αυτός που τις εκτελεί αναγνωρίζει ενδόμυχα ότι δεν θα έπρεπε να υπάρχουν».

Στο βιβλίο του «Bullshit Jobs: A Theory», που κυκλοφόρησε πριν από μερικές εβδομάδες, ο ίδιος παρουσιάζει αρκετές υποκατηγορίες όσων απασχολούνται στον κλάδο της ανούσιας απασχόλησης: Εχουμε λοιπόν τους flunkies (π.χ. ένας ρεσεψιονίστ σε κτίριο που δεν χρειάζεται ρεσεψιόν, αλλά κάνει το αφεντικό του να δείχνει πιο σημαντικό με την παρουσία του), τους goons (π.χ. ο νομικός σύμβουλος μιας επιχείρησης που υπάρχει μόνο για να αντιμετωπίζει τους νομικούς συμβούλους άλλων εταιρειών) και τους Duct-tapers (με χαρακτηριστικότερο παράδειγμα τον υπάλληλο που προσέλαβε το πανεπιστήμιο στη θέση του μαραγκού).

Στην κορυφή της πυραμίδας των bullshit jobs βρίσκονται οι λεγόμενοι task masters, οι οποίοι προσφέρουν σε εργαζόμενους τις δουλειές που δεν έχουν κανένα νόημα ή επιτηρούν την εργασία ανθρώπων που δεν χρειάζονται επιτήρηση. Παραδείγματος χάριν, ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος (CEO) μιας εταιρείας, ο οποίος ξοδεύει σχεδόν το σύνολο της εργάσιμης ημέρας σε meetings όπου παρουσιάζει γραφήματα (τα οποία έχουν ετοιμάσει άλλοι γι’ αυτόν), προσπαθώντας να αποδείξει πως θα κάνει την επιχείρηση πιο παραγωγική, απολύοντας εργαζομένους που προσφέρουν κοινωνικά χρήσιμη εργασία.

Οι Bullshit jobs είναι συνήθως καλύτερα αμειβόμενες από αυτό που ο Γκράμπερ χαρακτηρίζει shit jobs, δηλαδή κακά αμειβόμενες αλλά κοινωνικά χρήσιμες εργασίες, όπως π.χ. ενός οδοκαθαριστή – εδώ η ελληνική γλώσσα, με τον τεράστιο πλούτο της, μας επιτρέπει ίσως να κάνουμε τη διάκριση ανάμεσα στην κωλοδουλειά (shit job) και τη «δουλειά του κώλου» (bullshit job).

O Γκράμπερ δηλώνει αναρχικός και ως εκ τούτου δεν θέλησε ή δεν μπόρεσε να χρησιμοποιήσει ορισμένα μαρξιστικά εργαλεία ανάλυσης που, σύμφωνα με τους αριστερούς επικριτές του, θα του επέτρεπαν να εμβαθύνει και να εξηγήσει αποτελεσματικότερα τις πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες παρατηρήσεις του. Αντί να σταθεί στις έννοιες της παραγωγικής και μη παραγωγικής εργασίας, στην αξίας της εργασίας και της ανάγκης του συστήματος να διατηρεί ένα εργατικό δυναμικό από το οποίο θα αντλεί συνεχώς περισσότερη υπεραξία, προσεγγίζει το ζήτημα με όρους πολιτικής και ηθικής.

Το συμπέρασμά του (με κίνδυνο να τον αδικήσουμε ελαφρώς) θα μπορούσε να συμπυκνωθεί στη διαπίστωση ότι οι κυρίαρχες τάξεις χρειάζεται να διατηρούν τα κατώτερα στρώματα διαρκώς απασχολημένα ώστε αυτά να μην εξεγείρονται. Ο Γκράμπερ δηλαδή βλέπει ένα από τα παράλληλα οφέλη που έχουν οι bullshit jobs για τους εργοδότες σαν αιτία του φαινομένου. Παράλληλα, όμως, η θεωρία του δεν μπορεί να εξηγήσει τις στρατιές των ανέργων που μπορεί να χρειάζεται το σύστημα προκειμένου να διατηρεί την πίεση στους εργαζόμενους.

Παρ’ όλα αυτά αρκετές από τις εξαιρετικά συναρπαστικές επισημάνσεις του μας επιτρέπουν να διαλύσουμε ορισμένους από τους πανίσχυρους μύθους που συνοδεύουν την εργασία στις σύγχρονες καπιταλιστικές κοινωνίες.

Ισως ο σημαντικότερος μύθος είναι αυτός που λέει ότι ο γραφειοκρατικός υδροκεφαλισμός είναι χαρακτηριστικό του δημόσιου. «Εάν πας σε ένα κατάστημα της Apple», έλεγε παλαιότερα ο Γκράμπερ, «και σου πουν ότι προφανώς ο υπολογιστής σου χρειάζεται αντικατάσταση οθόνης, αλλά πρέπει να περιμένεις μία εβδομάδα για να σ’ το βεβαιώσει κάποιος ειδικός, δεν θα φωνάξεις “καταραμένοι γραφειοκράτες”».

Και αυτό, εξηγεί ο Γκράμπερ, συμβαίνει γιατί, ύστερα από χρόνια προπαγάνδας, μάθαμε να συνδέουμε τον όρο γραφειοκρατία με τους δημόσιους υπαλλήλους. Ο καπιταλισμός υποτίθεται ότι δεν παράγει ανούσιες θέσεις εργασίας. Και όμως το κάνει περισσότερο από οποιοδήποτε άλλο σύστημα στην ιστορία της ανθρωπότητας.

Εάν λοιπόν ανησυχούσατε για το τι θα κάνετε τις 12 ώρες εργασίας την ημέρα… ηρεμήστε. Το μόνο που χρειάζεται είναι ένας νεοφιλελεύθερος που θα σκεφτεί μια άχρηστη απασχόληση, μια ακροδεξιά κυβέρνηση (όπως αυτή της Αυστρίας) που θα χρησιμοποιήσει τη δύναμη του κράτους για να επιβάλει το «αόρατο χέρι της αγοράς» στον χώρο εργασίας και ένας καλοπληρωμένος CEO που θα σας επιβλέπει, ενώ νομίζετε ότι εργάζεστε.
