KARMA POLICE: Βρετανοί κατάσκοποι ανιχνεύουν τις ταυτότητες εκατομμυρίων χρηστών του διαδικτύου

Με την κωδική ονομασία KARMA POLICE, που είναι ο τίτλος του γνωστού τραγουδιού του δημοφιλούς Βρετανικού συγκροτήματος Radiohead, οι Βρετανοί κατάσκοποι της υπηρεσίας GCHQ, ξεκίνησαν μια επιχείρηση πριν από εφτά περίπου χρόνια, για να ανιχνεύσουν τις ταυτότητες εκατομμυρίων χρηστών του διαδικτύου

Ένα γεγονός που δείχνει ότι οι κατάσκοποι είναι ενδεχομένως φαν του συγκροτήματος. Είναι ενδιαφέρον το γεγονός ότι οι στίχοι του γνωστού τραγουδιού περιέχουν τη φράση "αυτό θα πάρεις, αν μπλέξεις με μας".

Η ισχύς της επιχείρησης KARMA POLICE φάνηκε το 2009, όταν η GCHQ ξεκίνησε μια άκρως απόρρητη επιχείρηση για να συλλέξει πληροφορίες ανθρώπων που χρησιμοποιούσαν το διαδίκτυο για ακρόαση ραδιοφωνικών εκπομπών. Η υπηρεσία χρησιμοποίησε ένα δείγμα περίπου 7 εκατομμυρίων καταγραφόμενων δεδομένων, τα οποία συλλέχθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια τριών μηνών, ώστε να παρατηρήσει τις συνήθειες ακρόασης περισσότερων από 200.000 ανθρώπων από 185 χώρες, ανάμεσά τους, οι ΗΠΑ, το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, η Ιρλανδία, ο Καναδάς, το Μεξικό, η Ισπανία, η Ολλανδία, η Γαλλία και η Γερμανία.

Η GCHQ "σκανάρει" το ιστορικό περιήγησης χρησιμοποιώντας 'ανιχνευτές' που διεισδύουν στα υπόγεια καλώδια οπτικών ινών που μεταφέρουν ιντερνετικά δεδομένα παγκοσμίως. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι δεν επιλέγονται συγκεκριμένοι 'ειδικοί στόχοι', αλλά συλλέγονται δεδομένα από την διαδικτυακή δραστηριότητα απλών πολιτών. Ορισμένες διαδικασίες αποθήκευσης δεδομένων, όπως αυτή με την ονομασία Black Hole, έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί για να αποθηκεύσουν περισσότερες από 1.1 τρισεκατομμύρια διαδικτυακές 'δραστηριότητες'.

Σύμφωνα με τα έγγραφα που ήρθαν στο φως, έως το 2010, η GCHQ κατέγραφε 30 δισ. δεδομένα ανά ημέρα. Έως το 2012, ο αριθμός αυτός αυξήθηκε στα 50 δισ. ημερησίως και ο στόχος ήταν να φτάσουν τα 100 δισ.

Προκειμένου να ανακαλύψουν την ταυτότητα του χρήστη ή των χρηστών πίσω από μια διεύθυνση IP, οι αναλυτές της GCHQ εισάγουν μια σειρά αριθμών σε ένα ξεχωριστό σύστημα με την ονομασία MUTANT BROTH, το οποίο χρησιμοποιείται για το 'κοσκίνισμα' των δεδομένων που αποθηκεύονται στο Black Hole, με την μορφή τεράστιων ποσοτήτων πολύ μικρών αρχείων, γνωστά ως cookies.

Εντός της υπηρεσίας, τα cookies αναφέρονται ως "αναγνωριστικά εντοπισμού στόχου" ή "παρόντα γεγονότα", επειδή χρησιμεύουν στην ανίχνευση του τρόπου χρήσης του διαδικτύου και στην αποκάλυψη των ταυτοτήτων των χρηστών.

Η υπηρεσία συγκέντρωνε δεδομένα από τα cookies που περιείχαν πληροφορίες για τις επισκέψεις των χρηστών σε διάφορες ιστοσελίδες, όπως το YouPorn για ενήλικες, μηχανές αναζήτησης Yahoo and Google, ή την ιστοσελίδα του γνωστού πρακτορείου ειδήσεων Reuters. Άλλες ιστοσελίδες που καταχωρήθηκαν ως 'πηγές' το 2009, είναι οι Hotmail, YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, WordPress, Amazon, και γνωστές ιστοσελίδες ειδήσεων όπως οι CNN, BBC, and Channel 4 News.

Σε μια περίοδο έξι μηνών, από τον Δεκέμβριο του 2007 έως τον Ιούνιο του 2008, περισσότερες από 18 δισ. καταγραφές από cookies ή από άλλες παρόμοιες κατηγορίες αρχείων ήταν προσβάσιμες μέσω του προγράμματος MUTANT BROTH.

Αλλά προγράμματα χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για διάφορες διαδικασίες. Για παράδειγμα το SOCIAL ANTHROPOID χρησιμοποιήθηκε για ανάλυση δεδομένων από ηλεκτρονική αλληλογραφία, instant messenger chats, συνδέσεις σε κοινωνικά δίκτυα και συζητήσεις, δεδομένα τηλεφωνικών συνδιαλέξεων, εντοπισμό τοποθεσίας κινητών τηλεφώνων, γραπτά μηνύματα και μηνύματα πολυμέσων. Το MEMORY HOLE ανιχνεύει τις λέξεις-φράσεις που εισάγονται σε μηχανές αναζήτησης και αντιστοιχεί κάθε αναζήτηση με μια διεύθυνση IP. Το MARBLED GECKO που διεισδύει σε λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με αναζητήσεις που γίνονται στο Google Maps και Google Earth. Το INFINITE MONKEYS, που αναλύει δεδομένα σχετικά με τη χρήση online πινάκων ανακοινώσεων και φόρουμ.

Έως τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2012, το πρόγραμμα TEMPORA συνέλεγε περισσότερα από 40 δισ. 'κομμάτια' διαδικτυακού περιεχομένου την ημέρα και χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να κατασκοπεύσει ανθρώπους σε όλη την Ευρώπη, τη Μέση Ανατολή, την Βόρεια Αφρική, σύμφωνα με άκρως απόρρητο σημείωμα που περιγράφει τον σκοπό του προγράμματος.

Όπως αναφέρει ο διευθυντής του κέντρου τεχνολογίας μέσων μαζικής ενημέρωσης του τεχνολογικού ινστιτούτου Μασσαχουσέττης, Ethan Zuckerman, μια μεμονωμένη καταγραφή δεδομένων από μια τηλεφωνική συνδιάλεξη, ένα email, ή, μια επίσκεψη σε ιστοσελίδα, δεν είναι αρκετή για να αποκαλύψει πολλά για την ιδιωτική ζωή ενός ατόμου. Όμως αν αυτά τα δεδομένα συσσωρευτούν, συγκεντρωθούν και αναλυθούν για μια περίοδο εβδομάδων ή μηνών, τότε γίνονται εξαιρετικά προσωπικά, επειδή θα μπορούσαν να αποκαλύψουν τις κινήσεις, συνήθειες, θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις, πολιτικές πεποιθήσεις, σχέσεις ή και σεξουαλικές προτιμήσεις οποιουδήποτε ατόμου.

Σύμφωνα με μια άκρως απόρρητη αναφορά που συντάχθηκε από κοινού από την συγκεκριμένη Βρετανική υπηρεσία και την NSA το 2011, η εξάπλωση της κρυπτογράφησης, περιορίζει την αποτελεσματικότητα τέτοιων επιχειρήσεων.

Η συγκεκριμένη αποκάλυψη έγινε από την ιστοσελίδα TheIntercept. Όπως αναφέρεται, βασίζεται σε ντοκουμέντα από τον γνωστό whistleblower, πρώην υπάλληλο της NSA, Edward Snowden. Στο αντίστοιχο άρθρο περιέχεται μια λεπτομερής ανάλυση καθώς και διάφορα έγγραφα. Έχει ενδιαφέρον και ο χάρτης με τις διαδρομές των υπόγειων καλωδίων οπτικών ινών από τα οποία υποκλέπτονται πληροφορίες. Όσον αφορά την Ελλάδα, ο χάρτης δείχνει το καλώδιο GWEN που ξεκινάει από την περιοχή του Μπάρι και καταλήγει στο Κοκκίνι Κέρκυρας.
