Deutsche Bank: Η παρακμή ενός κλάδου

Οι μετοχές της Deutsche Bank και της Credit Suisse αφαιρούνται από τον χρηματιστηριακό δείκτη Euro Stoxx 50. Τί σημαίνει αυτό για τον τραπεζικό κλάδο;

Παλαιότερα οι τραπεζίτες έκλειναν μεγάλες συμφωνίες διά χειραψίας, ο λόγος τους ήταν συμβόλαιο. Οι δουλειές βασίζονταν κυρίως στις προσωπικές επαφές και όχι στα τελευταία αποτελέσματα τριμήνου. Ένας τραπεζίτης απολάμβανε υψηλό κύρος, όπως και ένας καθηγητής ή ένας διευθυντής πανεπιστημιακής κλινικής. Η Deutsche Bank ήταν θεσμός επιφανής, σχεδόν ιερός. Εωσότου συνέβη αυτό που η ZEIT Online είχε χαρακτηρίσει κάποτε "τραπεζική ληστεία εκ των έσω". Μία "ληστεία" που άρχισε το 1989, όταν το διοικητικό συμβούλιο της Deutsche Bank, υπό τον τότε επικεφαλής Άλφρεντ Χέρχαουζεν, εξαγόρασε τη βρετανική επενδυτική τράπεζα Morgan Greenfell. Ακολούθησε η αγορά της αμερικανικής Bankers Trust το 1999. Μέσα σε δέκα χρόνια η Deutsche Bank είχε αναδειχθεί μεγαλύτερη τράπεζα παγκοσμίως.

Όμως η ταυτότητά της είχε αλλάξει: από υγιές πιστωτικό ίδρυμα που εξασφάλιζε κέρδη με την παροχή ρευστότητας στην ιδιωτική οικονομία, η Deutsche Bank μετατράπηκε σε ναό του τζόγου. Οι "ειδήμονες" της επενδυτικής τραπεζικής απέκτησαν τον έλεγχο, αλλά, σε αντίθεση με τους τραπεζίτες παλαιάς κοπής, αποποιήθηκαν την ευθύνη για τις συναλλαγές τους. Την ίδια στιγμή όμως συσσώρευαν όλο και υψηλότερο ρίσκο, εισπράττοντας παράλληλα όλο και μεγαλύτερα μπόνους. Εκτιμάται ότι μέσα σε 15 χρόνια τα "τυχερά" τους έφτασαν τα 40 με 50 δισεκατομμύρια ευρώ. Αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας η επενδυτική τραπεζική υψηλού κινδύνου δεν απέφερε κέρδη. Αντιθέτως, στην κατάταξη των μεγαλύτερων τραπεζών παγκοσμίως η Deutsche Bank κατρακύλησε στην 40ή θέση, μέσα σε έναν χρόνο η μετοχή της έπεσε στα 33 ευρώ καταγράφοντας απώλειες 66%, ενώ σημαντικά μερίδιά της σε βιομηχανικές επιχειρήσεις βγήκαν στο "σφυρί". Εξ΄ου και ο όρος "ληστεία εκ των έσω".

Στο απόλυτο ναδίρ

Σαν να μη φτάνουν όλα αυτά η Deutsche Bank βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπη με 7.000 δικαστικές προσφυγές παγκοσμίως, κατηγορούμενη για ξέπλυμα χρήματος, χειραγώγηση επιτοκίων ή φοροδιαφυγή. Πέρσι τα αυξημένα δικαστικά έξοδα προκάλεσαν ζημίες 6,8 δισεκατομμυρίων στην τράπεζα, ενώ φέτος έχουν ήδη δεσμευθει 5,4 δισεκατομμύρια για τον ίδιο σκοπό. Την άνοιξη του 2016 το κύρος της έφτασε στο ναδίρ, όταν ο επικεφαλής της τράπεζας Τζον Κράιαν διαβεβαίωνε ότι η Deutsche Bank είναι σε θέση να πληρώσει τα επιτόκια για ιδιαίτερα επισφαλή δάνεια. Όποιος αισθάνεται υποχρεωμένος να προβεί σε μία τέτοια δημόσια δήλωση, συνήθως βρίσκεται μπροστά σε μία ομολογία αποτυχίας. Όλα αυτά έχουν συνέπειες: συνταξιοδοτικά ταμεία και επενδυτές με μακροχρόνιο ορίζοντα αρχίζουν να αφαιρούν μετοχές της Deutsche Bank από το χαρτοφυλάκιό τους, ενώ η Moody´s υποβαθμίζει την πιστοληπτική ικανότητα της τράπεζας, κάτι που αυξάνει εκ νέου το κόστος για τη χρηματοδότησή της.

Ωστόσο και άλλες ευρωπαϊκές τράπεζες δεν φαίνεται να βρίσκονται σε καλύτερη μοίρα. Καθώς γνωστοποιούνται τα αποτελέσματα των τελευταίων ευρωπαϊκών stress test, η ιταλική UniCredit με τη γερμανική θυγατρική της Hypo-Vereinsbank καταγράφουν απώλειες 7,2%, οι δύο μεγάλες ισπανικές τράπεζες Santander και BBVA χάνουν 5,3% και 4,8% αντιστοίχως, ενώ ο ολλανδικός όμιλος ING, στον οποίο ανήκει και η γερμανική ING Diba, έχει απώλειες 4,6%. Επιπλέον, τα ευρωπαϊκά stress test υποδεικνύουν ότι πολλές τράπεζες- μεταξύ αυτών οι γερμανικές Deutsche Bank και Commerzbank- διαθέτουν σχετικά χαμηλή κεφαλαιακή επάρκεια. Και σαν να μη φτάνει αυτό, όλα τα τραπεζικά ιδρύματα υποφέρουν από τη σημερινή πολιτική χαμηλών επιτοκίων, η οποία μάλλον θα συνεχιστεί με το Brexit προ των θυρών. Η αποδυνάμωση των ευρωπαϊκών τραπεζών αποτυπώνεται με χαρακτηριστικό τρόπο στο βαρόμετρο των χρηματαγορών: οι μετοχές της Deutsche Bank και της Credit Suisse αφαιρούνται από τον δείκτη Stoxx Europe 50, ο οποίος περιλαμβάνει τις 50 ευρωπαϊκές μετοχές με την καλύτερη απόδοση. Μπορεί ο δείκτης να μην έχει την ίδια βαρύτητα με τον Euro Stoxx 50, που καταγράφει μόνο τις 50 ισχυρότερες μετοχές στην ευρωζώνη, αλλά σε κάθε περίπτωση η εκπαραθύρωση δύο ισχυρών πιστωτικών ιδρυμάτων αποτελεί πλήγμα για το κύρος τους.

Οι κίνδυνοι για το μέλλον

Οι μελλοντικές προοπτικές δεν διαγράφονται ιδιαίτερα αισιόδοξες. Ήδη από το 2015 ο πρώην επικεφαλής οικονομολόγος της Deutsche Bank Τόμας Μάιερ, καθηγητής σήμερα στο πανεπιστήμιο του Βίτεν-Χέρντεκε, προβλέπει το "τέλος" των παραδοσιακών τραπεζών λόγω των τεχνολογικών εξελίξεων, της πολιτικής χαμηλών επιτοκίων, αλλά και του συνεχώς εντεινόμενου κρατικού ελέγχου. Σύμφωνα με τον Μάιερ, τα χαμηλά επιτόκια περιορίζουν συνεχώς τα περιθώρια κέρδους και "όσο περισσότερο διαρκεί αυτή η πολιτική, τόσο περισσότερες τράπεζες θα εγκαταλείπουν τις παραδοσιακές μορφές συναλλαγών". Ο γερμανός οικονομολόγος πιστεύει μάλιστα ότι, με δεδομένες τις αυξημένες απαιτήσεις κεφαλαιακής επάρκειας και με ένα νομικό πλαίσιο που δεν επιτρέπει τη χρήση κρατικών πόρων για τη διάσωση τραπεζών, η "τράπεζα που τα κάνει όλα" δεν έχει μέλλον.

Ωστόσο, ο μεγαλύτερος εχθρός των πιστωτικών ιδρυμάτων δεν είναι άλλος από την τεχνολογική πρόοδο, η οποία προσφέρει εναλλακτικές δυνατότητες για τις παραδοσιακές συναλλαγές των τραπεζών, δηλαδή τις πληρωμές και τη δανειοδότηση επιχειρήσεων. Ο Μάιερ θεωρεί ότι "στο μέλλον οι συναλλαγές θα γίνονται μέσω ηλεκτρονικών συστημάτων πληρωμής, τομέας στον οποίο οι εταιρίες πληροφορικής διαθέτουν τεχνολογικό προβάδισμα" απέναντι στις τράπεζες. Όσο για την παροχή δανείων, ο γερμανός οικονομολόγος υποστηρίζει ότι "η ανάπτυξη του crowd funding αποδεικνύει τις δυνατότητες των συμμετοχικών επιχειρήσεων, στις οποίες η επένδυση συναντά την αποταμίευση".
