Honduran students face savage repression and death threats

Students denounced the disguised but violent repression of their movement by armed and masked men

Students from Honduras' National University of Agriculture denounced at a press conference Tuesday violence and threats against their movement as they maintained their three-day-long strike, occupying the university's facilities.

At the same time as the press conference, the students at the occupation were attacked by Honduran military and masked men who used bulldozers to attempt to forcibly remove the students, breaking down fences and leaving at least three students injured, reported teleSUR correspondent Gerardo Torres.

The strike followed the expulsion of 79 students after they demonstrated against the University's President and Honduras' Education Minister, Marlon Escoto, accusing him of protecting corrupt teachers.

The press conference was also supported by Committee of Families of the Detained and Disappeared.

The University Student Movement expressed solidarity Monday with the students of the Agriculture University located in Catacamas, Olancho about 200 kilometers from the capital, after student leaders received death threats. A delegation of human rights observers decided to travel to Catacamas to accompany the students.
