Κατασκευάζοντας συναίνεση επί τριάντα χρόνια

Καθώς συμπληρώνονται τριάντα χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του βιβλίου «Κατασκευάζοντας συναίνεση», ένας Αμερικανός δημοσιογράφος επιχειρεί να ανανεώσει την κλασική πλέον κριτική για την πολιτική οικονομία των ΜΜΕ. Και φυσικά ξεκίνησε ζητώντας τη βοήθεια του Νόαμ Τσόμσκι.

Πριν από 45 χρόνια οι πανεπιστημιακοί Έντουαρντ Χέρμαν και Νόαμ Τσόμσκι παρουσίασαν το βιβλίο τους «Counter-Revolutionary Violence» (H βία της αντεπανάστασης), στο οποίο αναφέρονταν στην ολοκληρωτική διαστρέβλωση της ενημέρωσης σχετικά με την εξωτερική πολιτική των ΗΠΑ στην Ινδοκίνα και στον πόλεμο του Βιετνάμ. Ο εκδοτικός οίκος ανήκε όμως στη Warner Brothers, ο διευθυντής της οποίας ζήτησε την άμεση απόσυρση του βιβλίου. Όταν οι εκδότες αρνήθηκαν να υπακούσουν, αυτός προτίμησε να κλείσει την εταιρεία τους και να καταστρέψει όλα τα αντίτυπα.

Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αποτέλεσε τη βάση για τα περίφημα πέντε σημεία του «μοντέλου προπαγάνδας» που ανέπτυξαν οι Χέρμαν και Τσόμσκι στο έργο τους «Κατασκευάζοντας συναίνεση». Τριάντα χρόνια αργότερα ένας καταξιωμένος δημοσιογράφος και ερευνητής, ο Ματ Ταΐμπι, επιχειρεί να διαπιστώσει εάν το μοντέλο έχει ακόμη αξία χρήσης στην εποχή του Τραμπ και του facebook. Έχοντας μάθει όμως από τα παθήματα των δασκάλων του, αποφάσισε να παρουσιάσει το νέο του βιβλίο με τίτλο «The Fairway» στο ίντερνετ με ένα διαφορετικό εκδοτικό εγχείρημα. Οι αναγνώστες θα λαμβάνουν κάθε εβδομάδα στα e-mails τους ένα κεφάλαιο του βιβλίου, το οποίο θα πληρώνουν είτε σε εβδομαδιαία είτε σε ετήσια βάση.

Χρειάζεται όμως ξαναγράψιμο το βιβλίο των Χέρμαν και Τσόμσκι (ο δεύτερος επέλεξε τη σειρά των ονομάτων θεωρώντας ότι ο ίδιος έπαιξε μικρότερο ρόλο στη συγγραφή);

Μετά το τέλος του Ψυχρού Πολέμου οι συγγραφείς ανανέωσαν το βιβλίο, αντικαθιστώντας τον ρόλο που παίζει ο αντικομμουνισμός στη λειτουργία των ΜΜΕ με τον λεγόμενο πόλεμο κατά της διεθνούς τρομοκρατίας. Αυτό είπαν είναι το νέο μεγάλο αφήγημα με το οποίο η Δύση και κυρίως οι ΗΠΑ δικαιολογούν κάθε επιθετική ενέργεια σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο (σήμερα θα τολμούσαμε να προτείνουμε στον Τσόμσκι να αντικαταστήσει και την τρομοκρατία με την «απειλή» από χώρες όπως η Ρωσία και η Κίνα, όπως αποτυπώνεται και στο νέο στρατηγικό δόγμα των ΗΠΑ).

Το μεγάλο ερώτημα όμως, εδώ και τουλάχιστον δέκα χρόνια, είναι εάν το «μοντέλο προπαγάνδας» που παρουσίασε το βιβλίο μπορεί να σταθεί στις μέρες μας, σε μια περίοδο μάλιστα που ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ εξαπολύει (φαινομενικά) λυσσαλέες επιθέσεις εναντίον κυρίαρχων ΜΜΕ, όπως το CNN και οι New York Times.

Ο Τσόμσκι έχει απαντήσει αρκετές φορές ότι παρά τις σημαντικές αλλαγές που επέφερε το ίντερνετ στη διάδοση των πληροφοριών, η βασική του θέση, για τις πιέσεις που ασκούν τα οικονομικά συμφέροντα στη λειτουργία των ΜΜΕ, δεν έχει αλλάξει. Οι ειδήσεις που βρίσκουμε στο Facebook, εξηγεί ο ίδιος, «προέρχονται και πάλι από τις ίδιες πηγές, όπως οι New York Times», με τη μόνη διαφορά ότι πλέον «διανέμονται με πιο εκχυδαϊσμένο τρόπο ώστε να γίνονται αντιληπτές και από ανθρώπους με μυαλό δεκάχρονου παιδιού».

Ο Ταΐμπι από την πλευρά του δίνει μεγαλύτερο βάρος στην ικανότητα των παραγωγών ειδήσεων να προσφέρουν προσωποποιημένη ενημέρωση σε διαφορετικά τμήματα του πληθυσμού χρησιμοποιώντας ειδικούς αλγόριθμους. Η τάση αυτή, υποστηρίζει, οδηγεί σε ακόμη μεγαλύτερη εμπορευματοποίηση της είδησης, καθώς τα ΜΜΕ και οι πλατφόρμες, όπως το Facebook, «πουλάνε» στους πελάτες τους μόνο τις πληροφορίες που εκείνοι θέλουν να διαβάσουν.

Το αποτέλεσμα, μεταξύ άλλων, είναι η δημιουργία τεχνητών εντάσεων και ψεύτικων διαχωριστικών γραμμών μεταξύ του πληθυσμού. Παρ’ όλα αυτά ο ίδιος δεν αμφισβητεί τη «συναίνεση» που παραμένει κυρίαρχη όταν διακυβεύονται κρίσιμα ζητήματα (για την τάξη που ελέγχει τα ΜΜΕ). Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα ο βομβαρδισμός της Συρίας από τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ, ο οποίος χαιρετίστηκε με πανομοιότυπο τρόπο από το ακροδεξιό δίκτυο Fox και το φιλελεύθερο δίκτυο MSNBC.

Σε άλλες περιπτώσεις ο Ταΐμπι διαπιστώνει ότι χρειάζεται να αλλάξει απλώς τα ονόματα μερικών χωρών και ορισμένων αξιωματούχων, ώστε το βιβλίο «Κατασκευάζοντας συναίνεση» να περιγράφει με τρομακτικές λεπτομέρειες τη σημερινή πραγματικότητα. Οι Χέρμαν και Τσόμσκι, παραδείγματος χάρη, είχαν πραγματοποιήσει μια εξαντλητική στατιστική ανάλυση για το πώς τα αμερικανικά ΜΜΕ υπερπρόβαλλαν τα εγκλήματα του Πολ Ποτ στην Καμπότζη, ενώ αγνοούσαν επιδεικτικά τη γενοκτονία που πραγματοποιούνταν την ίδια περίοδο στο Ανατολικό Τιμόρ, με την έμπρακτη στήριξη της Ουάσινγκτον.

Σήμερα ο Ταΐμπι διαπιστώνει την ίδια πρακτική με την υπερπροβολή των εγκλημάτων του καθεστώτος Ασαντ στη Συρία και τη σχεδόν ολοκληρωτική αποσιώπηση των καθημερινών σφαγών που πραγματοποιεί η Σαουδική Αραβία στην Υεμένη, χρησιμοποιώντας αμερικανική τεχνολογία και τεχνογνωσία.

Η αλλαγή της τεχνολογίας λοιπόν και η κυριαρχία του μοντέλου της πλατφόρμας τύπου Facebook στη διάδοση των ειδήσεων δεν φαίνεται να άλλαξε τις βασικές παραδοχές στις οποίες στηρίχτηκε το μοντέλο προπαγάνδας των Χέρμαν και Τσόμσκι. Κάθε θεωρία όμως χρειάζεται συνεχές «τριμάρισμα» και ο Ματ Ταΐμπι έχει πέσει με τα μούτρα στη δουλειά.
