«Φορτώνουν» με νέες κατηγορίες τον Ασάνζ οι ΗΠΑ

Αντιδρούν έντονα οργανώσεις υπεράσπισης της ελευθερίας του Τύπου και των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων

Οργανώσεις υπεράσπισης της ελευθερίας του Τύπου και των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων επέκριναν έντονα χθες Πέμπτη τις «επικίνδυνες» νέες κατηγορίες της κυβέρνησης των ΗΠΑ σε βάρος του Τζούλιαν Ασάνζ, του ιδρυτή του ιστότοπου WikiLeaks.

Με νέο έγγραφό του το αμερικανικό υπουργείο Δικαιοσύνης κατηγορεί τον Ασάνζ και τους συναδέλφους του στον WikiLeaks ότι στρατολόγησαν χάκερ και ενθάρρυναν άλλους για να εξασφαλίσουν πληροφορίες κατά παραβίαση της νομοθεσίας στις ΗΠΑ για την κατασκοπεία, οπως μεταδίδει το dpa και αναμεταδίδει το Αθηναϊκό Πρακτορείο Ειδήσεων. 

Ο Ασάνζ, αυστραλός υπήκοος, 48 ετών, κατηγορείτο ήδη ότι συνωμότησε με την Τσέλσι Μάνινγκ, άλλοτε αναλύτρια της υπηρεσίας πληροφοριών του αμερικανικού στρατού, για να εξασφαλίσει ένα γιγαντιαίο πακέτο εμπιστευτικών και απορρήτων διπλωματικών και στρατιωτικών εγγράφων το 2010.

Οι συνήγοροι υπεράσπισης του Ασάνζ, οι οποίοι δίνουν μάχη εναντίον της έκδοσής του στις ΗΠΑ από τη Βρετανία, χαρακτήρισαν πολιτικές τις νέες κατηγορίες.

Από την πλευρά του ο Τζόελ Σάιμον, επικεφαλής της Επιτροπής για την Προστασία των Δημοσιογράφων (Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ), τόνισε πως η δίωξη του Ασάνζ «θέτει σε κίνδυνο την ελευθερία του Τύπου στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και σε όλο τον κόσμο».

Ο Μπεν Γουίζνερ της ισχυρής οργάνωσης υπεράσπισης των ατομικών και αστικών ελευθεριών ACLU έκανε λόγο για «κλιμάκωση των επιθέσεων εναντίον της δημοσιογραφίας» από την κυβέρνηση του Ρεπουμπλικάνου προέδρου Ντόναλντ Τραμπ.

«Δημιουργεί ένα επικίνδυνο προηγούμενο, το οποίο μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για να γίνει στόχος οποιοσδήποτε ειδησεογραφικός οργανισμός που φέρνει προ των ευθυνών της την κυβέρνηση αποκαλύπτοντας τα μυστικά της», εξήγησε ο Γουίζνερ. «Και είναι εξίσου επικίνδυνο για τους αμερικανούς δημοσιογράφους που αποκαλύπτουν μυστικά [των κυβερνήσεων] άλλων χωρών», πρόσθεσε.

Η Σαμπίν Ντόλαν, επικεφαλής του γραφείου της μη κυβερνητικής οργάνωσης Δημοσιογράφοι Χωρίς Σύνορα (RSF) στις ΗΠΑ, έκρινε ότι οι κατηγορίες ενδέχεται να αποδειχθούν «αληθινά καταστροφικές για το μέλλον του ρεπορτάζ για ζητήματα εθνικής ασφάλειας» στη χώρα αυτή.

Ο Νιλς Μέλτσερ, ο ειδικός επιτετραμμένος του ΟΗΕ κατά των βασανιστηρίων, κατηγόρησε την Ουάσινγκτον ότι δεν έχει καμία ηθική νομιμοποίηση καθώς «ποινικοποιεί την αποκάλυψη αποδεικτικών στοιχείων από οποιονδήποτε» για τα «εγκλήματα πολέμου» που έχει διαπράξει και «απειλεί οποιονδήποτε τα ερευνά».

Η δίωξη σε βάρος του Ασάνζ δεν αφορά «τη δικαιοσύνη», πρόσθεσε, αλλά «την εξασφάλιση ατιμωρησίας για τους αξιωματούχους των ΗΠΑ», συμπλήρωσε ο Μέλτσερ μέσω Twitter.

Αφού επισκέφθηκε τον Ασάνζ στη φυλακή υψίστης ασφαλείας όπου κρατείται στο Λονδίνο πέρυσι, ο Μέλτσερ είχε τονίσει πως διαπίστωσε πως παρουσιάζει «όλα τα συνηθισμένα συμπτώματα της παρατεταμένης έκθεσης σε ψυχολογικά βασανιστήρια».

Ο Ασάνζ κρατείται ενόσω εκκρεμεί η εξέταση από το βρετανικό σύστημα δικαιοσύνης του αιτήματος έκδοσης που έχει υποβάλει η Ουάσινγκτον.

Δικαστήριο του Λονδίνου αποφάσισε να αναβληθεί η ακροαματική διαδικασία ως τον Σεπτέμβριο.

Ο Ασάνζ συνελήφθη από τη βρετανική αστυνομία τον Απρίλιο του 2019 στην πρεσβεία του Ισημερινού στο Λονδίνο, όπου πέρασε επτά χρόνια αφού κατέφυγε εκεί φοβούμενος ότι η δίωξή του στη Σουηδία έπειτα από καταγγελία για βιασμό αποτελούσε προπέτασμα καπνού για την έκδοσή του στις ΗΠΑ. Οι βρετανικές αρχές τονίζουν ότι παραβίασε τους όρους της απελευθέρωσής του με εγγύηση σε σχέση με την υπόθεση αυτή, η οποία έχει στο μεταξύ τεθεί στο αρχείο από τη σουηδική δικαιοσύνη.

Η αστυνομία μπήκε στην πρεσβεία αφού η σημερινή κυβέρνηση του Ισημερινού ανακάλεσε το πολιτικό άσυλο που του είχε προσφέρει η προηγούμενη.
