Γιατί δεν χαίρεται ο Μπόρις Τζόνσον για το Brexit που επιδίωκε;

Στις λέσχες διαλόγου του Κέιμπριτζ, της Οξφόρδης και άλλων βρετανικών πανεπιστημίων, οι φοιτητές εξασκούνται στην επιχειρηματολογία υπέρ μιας άποψης, ακόμα και αν δεν την ενστερνίζονται. Οι λέσχες έχουν ως απώτερο σκοπό την εξάσκηση στη ρητορική και να αναπτύξουν την ικανότητα των ομιλητών να επιχειρηματολογούν για οποιοδήποτε θέμα, ακόμα και όταν δεν το κατέχουν ή δεν συμφωνούν με την άποψη που εκφράζουν.

Σε αυτές τις λέσχες εκκολάπτονται οι μελλοντικοί πολιτικοί του βρετανικού κατεστημένου. Μερικοί θα εξελιχθούν σε ρήτορες, άλλοι σε δημαγωγούς. Και κάποια μέρα οι αγορεύσεις τους θα παρασύρουν πολλούς συμπολίτες τους να ψηφίσουν υπέρ ή κατά μιας πολιτικής επιλογής.

Μέσα σε ένα τέτοιο περιβάλλον ανέπτυξαν τις ρητορικές δεξιότητες τους άτομα όπως ο Μπόρις Τζόνσον και ο Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον. Δεξιότητες που χρησιμοποίησαν για να υποστηρίξουν τις προσωπικές τους φιλοδοξίες και τα συμφέροντα που εξυπηρετούν. Και σίγουρα δεν ξέχασαν ότι δεν χρειάζεται να πιστεύεις κάθε άποψη που υποστηρίζεις, αρκεί η επιχειρηματολογία σου να επιφέρει το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα.

Βλέποντας το αποτέλεσμα του βρετανικού δημοψηφίσματος, είναι αναμενόμενο να σκεφθεί κανείς ότι ο Τζόνσον πέτυχε το σκοπό του. Αυτή τη στιγμή είναι το φαβορί για την πρωθυπουργία και θα έπρεπε να είναι πολύ ευχαριστημένος.

Όμως μια βδομάδα πριν το δημοψήφισμα, είχε αρχίσει να κρατάει αποστάσεις από τις ξενοφοβικές κορώνες των άλλων υποστηρικτών του Brexit, παρόλο που νωρίτερα δεν είχε τέτοιους ενδοιασμούς. Αν εξαιρέσουμε την πιθανότητα να είχε ο Τζόνσον μια άντι-ξενοφοβική «αποκάλυψη», σαν αυτή του απόστολου Παύλου στο δρόμο προς τη Δαμασκό, κάτι άλλο συνέβη εκείνες τις μέρες.

Τότε φάνηκε ότι η πιθανότητα εξόδου από την ΕΕ παρέμενε ισχυρή, παρά τη δολοφονία της βουλευτού Κοξ και την πληθώρα παρεμβάσεων υπέρ της παραμονής από ηγέτες, Νομπελίστες και επενδυτές. Τότε έγινε αδιαμφισβήτητη η στροφή πολλών πτωχότερων λαϊκών στρωμάτων υπέρ του Brexit. Επίσης, τότε υπογράφτηκε από τον Τζόνσον και άλλους 84 συντηρητικούς βουλευτές (τα 2/3 των οποίων υποστήριζαν το Brexit), επιστολή προς τον Κάμερον για να τον επιβεβαιώσουν ότι θέλουν να παραμείνει αρχηγός του κόμματος σε περίπτωση Brexit. Η επιστολή παραδόθηκε στον Κάμερον το βράδυ του δημοψηφίσματος.

Όταν ανακοινώθηκε το αποτέλεσμα του δημοψηφίσματος, θα ήταν αναμενόμενο ο Τζόνσον να πανηγυρίζει, όπως έκανε ο Φάρατζ και πολλοί άλλοι υποστηρικτές του Brexit.

Ωστόσο ο Τζόνσον παρουσιάστηκε κατηφής στους δημοσιογράφους και δήλωσε ότι το αποτέλεσμα «δεν σημαίνει ότι θα σηκώσουμε την κρεμαστή γέφυρα που μας συνδέει με την Ευρώπη ... και θα κόψει τον αέρα σε όσους παίζουν πολιτικά παιχνίδια με τη μετανάστευση». Λίγες ώρες μετά ο Τζόνσον δήλωνε ότι «δεν χρειάζεται να βιαστούμε να εφαρμόσουμε το άρθρο 50» της συνθήκης της ΕΕ, με το οποίο μια χώρα δηλώνει ότι επιθυμεί να φύγει από την Ένωση.

Πολλές φορές τα λόγια ενός πολιτικού είναι διφορούμενα, όμως ο Τζόνσον μάλλον εννοούσε τα παραπάνω. Όπως πολλοί άλλοι πολιτικοί, μάλλον πόνταρε ότι οι Βρετανοί θα ψήφιζαν (απρόθυμα ίσως, και με μικρή πλειοψηφία) να παραμείνουν στην ΕΕ. Τότε θα μπορούσε να θεωρηθεί ως ένας ηγέτης με αρχές που αποδεχόταν την απόφαση του λαού, ο μόνος που μπορούσε να ενώσει την ευρωσκεπτικιστική και την φιλοευρωπαϊκή φράξια του κόμματος του, και ο καταλληλότερος αντικαταστάτης του Κάμερον.

Άλλωστε, ο Τζόνσον και ο Κάμερον δεν έχουν ιδεολογικές διαφορές, παρόλο που βρέθηκαν σε αντίπαλα στρατόπεδα στο θέμα του Brexit. Και οι δύο πόνταραν ότι το Brexit δεν θα κέρδιζε και, απ’ ότι φαίνεται, και οι δύο έχασαν. Αυτό που ήθελαν ήταν ο ένας να κερδίσει, και ο άλλος να διατηρήσει, την πρωτοκαθεδρία στην αντιπροσώπευση της ολιγαρχίας, όχι να προκαλέσουν σεισμική δόνηση στις αγορές της.

Όμως, όπως έδειξε και το ελληνικό δημοψήφισμα, το αποτέλεσμα της λαϊκής βούλησης δεν είναι πάντα το αναμενόμενο. Και οι λέσχες διαλόγου στην Οξφόρδη και Κέιμπριτζ δεν προετοιμάζουν τους μελλοντικούς πολιτικούς για κάθε ενδεχόμενο.
