“Οι Νέοι Δημοκράτες, ένα κόμμα που πρόσκειται στην αριστερά, τερμάτισε τη 44χρονη διακυβέρνηση των Συντηρητικών στην περιοχή της Αλμπέρτα στον Καναδά, επιτυγχάνοντας μία συντριπτική νίκη με την υπόσχεση μίας αναθεώρησης της πολιτικής στον τομέα πετρελαίου και αερίου που βρίσκεται στην ενεργειακή καρδιά της χώρας. Το αποτέλεσμα των εκλογών αποτέλεσε μία σεισμικού μεγέθους πολιτική αλλαγή στην περιοχή και προκάλεσε την άμεση παραίτηση του πρωθυπουργού των Προοδευτικών Συντηρητικών Τζιμ Πρέντις από την ηγεσία του κόμματος. Ο Πρέντις παραιτήθηκε επίσης από μέλος του κοινοβουλίου. 'Γράψαμε λίγη ιστορία απόψε', δήλωσε στους ενθουσιώδεις υποστηρικτές της η νεοεκλεγείσα πρωθυπουργός των Νέων Δημοκρατών Ρέιτσελ Νότλι.”

“Το NDP αναμένεται να τηρήσει πολύ λιγότερο βολική στάση απέναντι στην ισχυρή ενεργειακή βιομηχανία αυτής της περιοχής του Δυτικού Καναδά και οι επενδυτές σε μετοχές ενεργειακών εταιριών στις χρηματαγορές του Καναδά αναμένεται να αντιδράσουν σήμερα αρνητικά. Η Νότλι έχει προτείνει αναθεώρηση των δικαιωμάτων εκμετάλλευσης πετρελαίου και αερίου στην πλούσια σε φυσικούς πόρους περιοχή και δεν είναι τόσο ένθερμη για ορισμένα σχέδια αγωγών όπως το αμφιλεγόμενο πρόγραμμα Keystone XL της TransCanada Corp. Το NDP είχε υποσχεθεί επίσης ότι θα αυξήσει τη φορολογία των επιχειρήσεων κατά δύο ποσοστιαίες μονάδες, στο 12%.”
