Comandante Chávez: Οι σταθμοί στη ζωή και την πολιτική του διαδρομή

Σαν σήμερα στις 5 Μαρτίου του 2013 ο Ούγκο Τσάβες άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή σε ηλικία 58 ετών μετά από διετή μάχη με τον καρκίνο. Για 14 χρόνια ο πρόεδρος της Βενεζουέλας υπήρξε ένας από τους πιο χαρισματικούς και ταυτόχρονα πιο αμφιλεγόμενους ηγέτες στο κόσμο. Ήταν κάθε άλλο παρά ένας «άχρωμος» πρόεδρος. Ένα αποτυχημένο πραξικόπημα το 1992 ήταν αυτό που τον έφερε στο προσκήνιο αλλά οι εκλογικοί του θρίαμβοι ήταν αυτοί που αναγέννησαν την Αριστερά της Λατινικής Αμερικής.

Ο πρώην αντισυνταγματάρχης και αλεξιπτωτιστής γεννήθηκε στις 28 Ιουλίου του 1954. Ήταν γιος δασκάλων και μεγάλωσε με τη γιαγιά του. Μια απόπειρα πραξικοπήματος το Φεβρουάριο του 1992 τον οδήγησε στη φυλακή για δύο χρόνια. Ωστόσο το 1998, ως υποψήφιος του συνασπισμού των αριστερών κομμάτων, κέρδισε τις προεδρικές εκλογές. Δύο χρόνια αργότερα, επικυρώθηκε από το λαό η πρότασή του για το νέο «Σύνταγμα της Μπολιβαριανής Επανάστασης» και ο ίδιος επανεξελέγη στην προεδρία.

Ήταν σφοδρός πολέμιος του αμερικανικού ιμπεριαλισμού, αν και ποτέ δεν διέκοψε την παροχή πετρελαίου προς τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Καλλιέργησε μια επαναστατική αλλά αμφιλεγόμενη, για πολλούς, εικόνα έχοντας πολιτική φιλία με προσωπικότητες όπως ο Μουαμάρ Καντάφι της Λιβύης, ο Ιρανός πρόεδρος Μαχμούντ Αχμαντινετζάντ και ο πρόεδρος της Συρίας Μπασάρ αλ Ασαντ.
 
Σταθερή πολιτική του θέση να ενισχύσει το ρόλο του κράτους στην οικονομική δραστηριότητα, χωρίς πάντως να καταφέρνει πάντα να ελέγξει τον πληθωρισμό. Αύξησε, πάντως, τις «κοινωνικές αποστολές», που του χάρισαν την αμέριστη υποστήριξη των λαϊκών τάξεων. Ως επικεφαλής της μεγαλύτερης παραγωγού χώρας πετρελαίου στη Νότια Αμερική, έχει χτίσει τη δημοτικότητά του πάνω σε πολλά κοινωνικά προγράμματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της υγείας, της εκπαίδευσης και της στέγασης.
 
Από τον Ιούνιο του 2011 όταν διαγνώστηκε ότι πάσχει από καρκίνο, υποβλήθηκε σε τέσσερις χειρουργικές επεμβάσεις στην Κούβα. Μετά από την τελευταία χειρουργική επέμβαση στην Αβάνα στις 11 Δεκεμβρίου, είχε σχεδόν εξαφανιστεί από το δημόσιο λόγο μέχρι και την ανακοίνωση του θανάτου του την Τρίτη.
