Ιλχάν Όμαρ: «Θα στηρίζατε μια γενοκτονία στη Βενεζουέλα;»

H Ιλχάν Όμαρ, μία από τις δύο πρώτες μουσουλμάνες γυναίκες στο Κονγκρέσο των ΗΠΑ, προκάλεσε τον Έλιοτ Άμπραμς, ρωτώντας τον αν θα υποστήριζε μία γενοκτονία και εγκλήματα πολέμου στη Βενεζουέλα.

Από τα τέλη Ιανουαρίου ο Άμπραμς είναι ο ειδικός απεσταλμένος των ΗΠΑ για τη Βενεζουέλα, με σκοπό να συντονίσει τη δράση των ΗΠΑ απέναντι στην κρίση της χώρας.

Ως διπλωμάτης στο παρελθόν ο Άμπραμς έχει υποστηρίξει πολιτικές πραξικοπημάτων και αμερικανικών επεμβάσεων στη Λατινική Αμερική. Είναι γνωστός για την συμμετοχή του στην υποστήριξη της χούντας στη Γουατεμάλα τη δεκαετία του ’80. Είναι επίσης γνωστός για τη συμμετοχή του στην υπόθεση Ιράν-Contra, όπου οι ΗΠΑ χρησιμοποίησαν χρήματα που κέρδιζαν από μυστικές πωλήσεις όπλων στο Ιράν για να χρηματοδοτήσουν τα ακροδεξιά τάγματα θανάτου των Contras στη Νικαράγουα.

Κατά τη διάρκεια ακρόασης της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων σχετικά με την πολιτική των ΗΠΑ απέναντι στη Βενεζουέλα, η Ιλχάν Όμαρ απευθύνθηκε στον Άμπραμς: «Θα στηρίζατε μια στρατιωτική παράταξη των ΗΠΑ στο εσωτερικό της Βενεζουέλας, αν αυτή σχετίζεται με εγκλήματα πολέμου, εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας ή γενοκτονίες, αν πιστεύατε ότι κάτι τέτοιο θα υπηρετούσε τα συμφέροντα των ΗΠΑ, όπως κάνατε στη Γουατεμάλα, στο Ελ Σαλβαδόρ και στη Νικαράγουα;». Ο Άμπραμς αρνήθηκε να απαντήσει.

Η Όμαρ είπε επίσης στον Άμπραμς: «Το 1991 δηλώσατε ένοχος για δύο κατηγορίες ότι δεν παραχωρήσατε πληροφορίες στο Κονγκρέσο σχετικά με την συμμετοχή σας στην υπόθεση Ιράν-contra, για τις οποίες αργότερα πήρατε χάρη από τον πρόεδρο Τζορτζ Μπους. Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω γιατί τα μέλη αυτής της επιτροπής ή ο αμερικανικός λαός θα έπρεπε να θεωρήσουν αληθή όσα λέτε σήμερα».

Ο Άμπραμς επιχείρησε να απαντήσει στο σχόλιο, αλλά η Όμαρ τον διέκοψε, διευκρινίζοντας ότι δεν πρόκειται για ερώτηση. Και συνέχισε: «Στις 8 Φεβρουαρίου 1982 καταθέσατε ενώπιον της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων για την πολιτική των ΗΠΑ στο Ελ Σαλβαδόρ. Εκεί απορρίψατε ως “κομμουνιστική προπαγάνδα” μια αναφορά για τη σφαγή στο Ελ Μοζοτε, όπου περισσότεροι από 800 άνθρωποι, μεταξύ των οποίων και παιδιά 2 ετών, δολοφονήθηκαν βίαια από στρατεύματα εκπαιδευμένα από τις ΗΠΑ. Κατά τη διάρκεια της σφαγής, κάποια στρατεύματα περηφανεύτηκαν ότι βίασαν 12χρονα κορίτσια πριν τα σκοτώσουν. Εσείς αργότερα χαρακτηρίσατε την πολιτική των ΗΠΑ στο Ελ Σαλβαδόρ “καταπληκτική επιτυχία”. Το πιστεύετε ακόμα αυτό; Ναι ή όχι;»

Ο ίδιος δήλωσε ότι δεν πρόκειται να απαντήσει σε μια τέτοια προσωπική επίθεση.

Την ίδια στιγμή εξελίσσεται μια προσπάθεια δολοφονίας χαρακτήρα εναντίον της Ιλχάν Όμαρ, με ψευδείς κατηγορίες περί αντισημιτισμού.
