New York Times: η φωνή του πραξικοπηματία

Πρόσφατη έρευνα στα αρχεία της «ναυαρχίδας» του αμερικανικού φιλελευθερισμού αποδεικνύει ότι η εφημερίδα έχει στηρίξει σχεδόν όλα τα πραξικοπήματα που πραγματοποίησαν οι ΗΠΑ στη Λατινική Αμερική. Όπως έκανε δηλαδή και με την ελληνική χούντα.

«Μήπως είναι καιρός για ένα πραξικόπημα;» τιτλοφορούσε μεγάλη ανάλυσή της η εφημερίδα New York Times, πριν από μερικούς μήνες. Σε οποιαδήποτε δημοκρατική κοινωνία το ερώτημα ακούγεται εξίσου εξωπραγματικό με το να αναρωτιέσαι αν είναι καιρός για μια γενοκτονία ή για ένα ολοκαύτωμα. Οχι όμως στις ΗΠΑ. Και όχι για τους φιλελεύθερους αναγνώστες των New York Times.

Πρόσφατη έρευνα που πραγματοποίησε ο Αμερικανός δημοσιογράφος Ανταμ Τζόνσον αποδεικνύει ότι στα δώδεκα μεγάλα πραξικοπήματα και στρατιωτικές εισβολές που έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί στη Λατινική Αμερική, από την εποχή της ίδρυσης της CIA, η εφημερίδα στήριξε ανοιχτά τα δέκα, ενώ κράτησε ουδέτερη στάση στα δύο (στις εξελίξεις που προηγήθηκαν της αμερικανικής εισβολής στη Γρενάδα το 1983 και στο πραξικόπημα στην Ονδούρα το 2009).

Ολοκληρωτικά απούσα στα κεντρικά άρθρα γνώμης της εφημερίδας ήταν κάθε αναφορά στον ρόλο της Ουάσινγκτον και συγκεκριμένα της CIA, ενώ σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις την «ευθύνη» για το πραξικόπημα έφερε είτε ο λαός, που είναι κατώτερος των περιστάσεων, είτε ο πρόεδρος που ανατρέπεται. Συγκεκριμένα, στο πραξικόπημα της Βραζιλίας το 1964 η εφημερίδα κατηγόρησε την αδυναμία των Βραζιλιάνων να επιλέξουν «ηγέτες με κύρος», ενώ για το πραξικόπημα στη Χιλή το 1973 σημείωνε ότι «μεγάλο τμήμα της ευθύνης ανήκει στον άτυχο Αλιέντε». Οι Αργεντίνοι, σύμφωνα με τους New York Times, «έδειξαν μεγαλύτερο ενδιαφέρον για τη μετάδοση ενός αγώνα ποδοσφαίρου παρά για την ανατροπή της προέδρου Ισαμπέλ Περόν από τις ένοπλες δυνάμεις» το 1976.

Το γεγονός ότι σε όλα τα προηγούμενα πραξικοπήματα χρησιμοποιήθηκαν απάνθρωπες μορφές βασανισμού (που περιλαμβάνονταν σε εγχειρίδια του αμερικανικού Πενταγώνου) αποκαλύπτεται συνήθως με καθυστέρηση μερικών χρόνων ή και δεκαετιών από κάποιο editorial της εφημερίδας.

Εντυπωσιακός είναι και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο επαναλαμβάνονται σχεδόν αυτολεξεί τα ίδια επιχειρήματα για την «αντιδημοκρατικότητα» εκλεγμένων προέδρων όπως ο Αλιέντε, ο Ούγκο Τσάβες και τώρα ο Μαδούρο, οι οποίοι «μην έχοντας νομιμοποίηση», επιχειρούν να «παρακάμψουν το κοινοβούλιο και τη Δικαιοσύνη» – εξαίρεση αποτελούν οι περιπτώσεις όπου η Δικαιοσύνη δικαιώνει τους ηγέτες, οπότε η εφημερίδα βεβαιώνει τους αναγνώστες της ότι οι δικαστές ελέγχονται από το καθεστώς.

Ο Ανταμ Τζόνσον περιορίζει την έρευνά του στα πραξικοπήματα και σε ορισμένες από τις στρατιωτικές εισβολές στη Λατινική Αμερική. Κρίνοντας όμως από τη δική μας γεωπολιτική γειτονιά, η στάση στα κεντρικά άρθρα γνώμης δεν αλλάζει στο παραμικρό. Στην περίπτωση της ελληνικής χούντας των συνταγματαρχών, η εφημερίδα, αν και επιχείρησε να κρατήσει φαινομενικά ουδέτερη στάση, υιοθέτησε σχεδόν το σύνολο των επιχειρημάτων των πραξικοπηματιών: η Ελλάδα είχε εισέλθει σε πολιτική κρίση από την οποία δεν θα μπορούσε να ξεφύγει με δημοκρατικές διαδικασίες, γεγονός που θα τη μετέτρεπε σε εύκολη λεία για τους κομμουνιστές, εντός και εκτός της χώρας.

Μόλις δύο ημέρες μετά το πραξικόπημα της 21ης Απριλίου του 1967, η εφημερίδα σημείωνε μεταξύ άλλων: «Η δημοκρατία, στη χώρα όπου γεννήθηκε και όπου αργότερα παρενέβησαν οι ΗΠΑ για να τη σώσουν, συνθλίβεται ανάμεσα σε δυο μυλόπετρες, οι οποίες περιστρέφονται αμφότερες στο όνομα της δημοκρατίας. Από τη μια έχουμε την Ακρα Δεξιά, η οποία εκπροσωπείται από τον στρατό […], και από την άλλη την Ακρα Αριστερά, η οποία εκπροσωπείται από τους κομμουνιστές, τους συνοδοιπόρους τους στην ΕΔΑ και από μια ομάδα της οποίας ηγείται ο Ανδρέας Παπανδρέου. Οι μηχανορραφίες των τελευταίων προκάλεσαν την αντίδραση των πρώτων».

Αντίστοιχα, για το πραξικόπημα της 12ης Σεπτεμβρίου του 1980 στη γειτονική Τουρκία, η εφημερίδα χαιρέτιζε τον άμεσο σχηματισμό κυβέρνησης από τον δικτάτορα Εβρέν. Οι συντάκτες της μάλιστα δυσκολεύονταν να κρύψουν την ικανοποίησή τους για την περίοπτη θέση που αναλάμβανε ο Τουργκούτ Οζάλ, ο «αρχιτέκτονας της πολιτικής λιτότητας» και βασικός σύνδεσμος της Τουρκίας με το ΔΝΤ.

Προφανώς οι New York Times δεν αποτελούν τη μοναδική εφημερίδα η οποία στηρίζει το σύνολο των αποφάσεων που λαμβάνουν σε κρίσιμα ζητήματα το Στέιτ Ντιπάρτμεντ, ο Λευκός Οίκος και η CIA. Η έρευνα του Ανταμ Τζόνσον όμως έρχεται να μας υπενθυμίσει την απόλυτη ταύτιση των Αμερικανών φιλελεύθερων με την πολιτική που εφαρμόζει ο εκάστοτε πρόεδρος. Ακόμη και αν είναι… πορτοκαλί και δηλώνουν ότι τον σιχαίνονται.
