Άλλη μια τραγωδία στη Μεσόγειο

Νέα τραγωδία την Τετάρτη κοντά στις Ιταλικές ακτές. Τουλάχιστον 80 μετανάστες που επέβαιναν σε πλοιάριο αγνοούνται και υπάρχει φόβος ότι έχουν πνιγεί. Το πλοίο ταξίδευε από την Βόρεια Αφρική προς την Ιταλία.

Οι 27 μετανάστες που διασώθηκαν από το Ιταλικό λιμενικό είπαν ότι υπήρχαν άλλοι περίπου 75 στο πλοίο όταν βυθίστηκε. Λίγες μόλις μέρες πριν την νέα τραγωδία, δεκάδες άνθρωποι πέθαναν από ασφυξία στο αμπάρι ενός κατάμεστου αλιευτικού σκάφους.

Την περασμένη Κυριακή, οι Ιταλικές αρχές ανακοίνωσαν ότι περισσότεροι από 1.600 μετανάστες διασώθηκαν από το ναυτικό και το λιμενικό καθ'όλη τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας, ανεβάζοντας τον συνολικό αριθμό των μεταναστών που κατέφθασαν στις Ιταλικές ακτές μέσα στο 2014, σε περισσότερες από εξήντα χιλιάδες.

Σύμφωνα με την Ύπατη Αρμοστεία του ΟΗΕ για τους πρόσφυγες, από την αρχή του χρόνου, 500 μετανάστες και πρόσφυγες έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους στην Μεσόγειο. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, υπήρξαν πολλές παρόμοιες τραγωδίες, ειδικότερα κοντά στις Ιταλικές ακτές, με Αφρικανούς μετανάστες να συνωστίζονται σε πλοιάρια ψάχνοντας διέξοδο προς την Ευρώπη. Το 2013, τον Οκτώβριο, περισσότεροι από 300 μετανάστες κυρίως από Ερυθραία και Σομαλία, βρήκαν τραγικό θάνατο όταν το πλοίο στο οποίο επέβαιναν βυθίστηκε ανοιχτά του νησιού Λαμπεντούζα της Ιταλίας.

Κατά τη διάρκεια των τελευταίων 20 ετών, υπολογίζεται ότι 17.000 έως 20.000 μετανάστες έχουν χαθεί κατά τη διάρκεια επικίνδυνων ταξιδιών σε κατάμεστα αλιευτικά σκάφη ή φουσκωτές βάρκες.
