Ασύλληπτο το μέγεθος της ανθρωπιστικής καταστροφής

“Το ρεκόρ των τριών εκατομμυρίων ξεπερνούν σήμερα οι Σύροι πρόσφυγες, εν μέσω αναφορών για ολοένα αυξανόμενες τρομακτικές συνθήκες στο εσωτερικό της χώρας - πόλεις, όπου οι άνθρωποι μαστίζονται από την πείνα και οι πολίτες στοχοποιούνται ή γίνονται θύματα της γενικευμένης βίας.”

“Σχεδόν οι μισοί από όλους τους Σύρους έχουν ήδη αναγκαστεί να εγκαταλείψουν τα σπίτια τους για να διασωθούν. Ένας στους οκτώ Σύρους έχει καταφύγει εκτός συνόρων, δηλαδή ένα εκατομμύριο περισσότεροι άνθρωποι από ό, τι πριν από ένα χρόνο. Επιπλέον, 6,5 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι έχουν εκτοπιστεί στο εσωτερικό της Συρίας. Πάνω από το ήμισυ των ξεριζωμένων είναι παιδιά.”

“Οι πρόσφυγες που διασχίζουν την έρημο προς την ανατολική Ιορδανία αναγκάζονται να πληρώνουν τεράστια ποσά τους διακινητές, τα οποία κυμαίνονται από 100 δολάρια ανά άτομο ή περισσότερα, προκειμένου να τους μεταφέρουν στην ασφάλεια.”

“Η Συριακή κρίση έχει καταστεί η μεγαλύτερη ανθρωπιστική κατάσταση έκτακτης ανάγκης της εποχής μας, αλλά ο κόσμος αδυνατεί να ικανοποιήσει τις ανάγκες των προσφύγων και των χωρών που τους φιλοξενούν,”

“Η Ύπατη Αρμοστεία ανησυχεί επίσης ιδιαίτερα για την τύχη των πολλών εκατοντάδων Σύρων που βρίσκονται παγιδευμένοι στον καταυλισμό προσφύγων Al Obaidy στο Al Qa'im του Ιράκ, τα γραφεία και τις αποθήκες του οποίου αναγκάστηκαν να εγκαταλείψουν οι υπηρεσίες του ΟΗΕ και διεθνείς ΜΚΟ. Η Ύπατη Αρμοστεία αναφέρει ότι τοπικοί συνεργάτες της συνεχίζουν να παρέχουν προμήθειες και συντήρηση, ωστόσο η κατάσταση παραμένει ρευστή.”

“Πολλοί νεοαφιχθέντες προσφύγες αναφέρουν ότι η απόφασή τους να φύγουν από τη Συρία ήταν η έσχατη λύση. Ένας αυξανόμενος αριθμός, περιλαμβανομένων περισσότερων από τους μισούς που καταφεύγουν στο Λίβανο, είχαν μετακινηθεί στο εσωτερικό της Συρίας τουλάχιστον μία φορά προτού φύγουν, και ένας στους δέκα είχαν μετακινηθεί περισσότερο από τρεις φορές. Μια γυναίκα ανέφερε στην Υ.Α. ότι μετακινήθηκε κοντά στις 20 φορές, πριν τελικά καταφύγει στο Λίβανο.”

“Ένα αυξανόμενο ποσοστό των πρόσφατων αφίξεων - έως και 15% στην Ιορδανία, για παράδειγμα - πάσχουν από μακροχρόνιες ιατρικές παθήσεις όπως διαβήτη, καρδιακές παθήσεις και καρκίνο, και έφυγαν αφού πλέον στην Συρία δεν ήταν σε θέση να λαμβάνουν την κατάλληλη ιατροφαρμακευτική φροντίδα.”

“Μόνο κατά το περασμένο έτος, 1.7 εκατομμύρια πρόσφυγες έλαβαν επισιτιστική βοήθεια, 350,000 παιδιά φοιτούσαν σε σχολεία, και 400,000 διέμεναν σε προσφυγικούς καταυλισμούς. Από την αρχή της κρίσης το 2011, η Ύπατη Αρμοστεία έχει προβεί στην εγγραφή προσφύγων με τη μεγαλύτερη ταχύτητα από οποιαδήποτε άλλη προσφυγική κρίση στην ιστορία της.”
