How Social Media is leveling the playing field between governments, militants, and ordinary people

Part 1 Decades before smartphones, the internet, and social media, the philosopher Marshall McLuhan, who worked on media theory, predicted a future world war fought using information. While World War I and World War II were waged using armies and mobilized economies, “ World War III [will be] a guerrilla information war with no division between military and civilian participation, ” McLuhan said, a prophecy included in his 1970 book of reflections, “Culture Is Our Business.” McLuhan’s prediction may have felt outlandish in his own era, but it seems very close to our present-day reality. Decades ago, the barriers to entry for broadcasting and publishing were so high that only established institutions could meaningfully engage in news dissemination. But over the past 10 to 15 years, ordinary individuals have been radically empowered with the ability to record, publish, and broadcast information to millions around the world, at minimal cost. The revolutionary impact of

Step by Step: How to fabricate news about the 'default' in Venezuela

Let us not forget that Standard & Poor, Moody and Fitch rating services are financed by the banks and therefore have no real independence. Part 2 - A pleasant "atmosphere" for the meeting Last Friday, a new list of sanctioned officials emerged from the U.S. Treasury Department against Caracas. In this group, which is made up of nearly 20 members of the government, including President Maduro, came the warning: " Americans should be cautious in their relations with the Venezuelan government, " added the statement from Washington. It demanded that they did not get involved in " transactions, agreements, in a manner directly or indirectly " with the officials named on the list of the treasury department under penalty of fines of up to 10 million dollars and imprisonment for a maximum 30 years. In that atmosphere that was also burdened with the sanctions agreed by the Council of the European Union bondholders met to arrange the refinan

The big disappointment with Mr. Robot

by system failure I started watching Mr. Robot from the beginning of the first season and I must confess that it is one of the most interesting series I've seen the latest years. In fact, it is one of the very few that I still watch. The plot appeared to be fascinating, no similarity with other modern series. I also enjoyed the acting of almost all the cast. The presence of the Chinese Dark Army brought some first suspicions about which direction the story would go, but I had to wait until the third season.   And while the directing of the series is even more impressive in the third season, the big disappointment came with the plot. The series was promising of giving something really revolutionary against the establishment, but it turns out to be another covert US propaganda against the new enemy: China. Especially the last two episodes uncovered the purpose. The whole hacking team and even Mr. Robot himself appeared as if they were manipulat

Imagine! An ‘alternative Internet’ not ‘completely in the hands of Facebook & Google’

Having a more alternative internet that is more controlled by its users offers better options to protect ourselves, says Dmytri Kleiner a privacy activist and software developer. Telecom giants in the US are set for a significant victory if Washington goes ahead with its plan to repeal so-called 'net neutrality' rules. The Obama-era legislation was enacted to prevent internet service providers from potentially cornering parts of the digital market and charging extra fees. As a result, it's likely to have a direct impact on internet speeds in the US and cause a lot of inconvenience for users. Meanwhile, Google has just been caught secretly collecting location data from Android phone users, even after they turned off location settings and had no SIM card in their devices. So is there a way to escape from the increasing arbitrariness of the ‘regular internet’? Kim Dotcom, the founder of Megaupload, who is wanted in America for alleged illega

WikiLeaks paper shows probable signs that the US was preparing for a proxy war in Syria as early as 2006

The WIKILEAKS Public Library of US Diplomacy (PlusD) holds the world's largest searchable collection of United States confidential, or formerly confidential, diplomatic communications. As of April 8, 2013 it holds 2 million records comprising approximately 1 billion words. The collection covers US involvements in, and diplomatic or intelligence reporting on, every country on earth. It is the single most significant body of geopolitical material ever published. The PlusD collection, built and curated by WikiLeaks, is updated from a variety of sources, including leaks, documents released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and documents released by the US State Department systematic declassification review. globinfo freexchange A cable from January 2010 shows probable signs that the US was preparing for a proxy war in Syria as early as 2006. Despite that, as the cable itself describes, the Syrian government was making some efforts to open its

Chris Murphy accuses US of complicity in war crimes from the floor of the Senate

Members of Congress have largely avoided speaking out about the famine and cholera epidemic in Yemen, even as aid organizations, celebrities, and late-night TV hosts sounded the alarm this past week. But one U.S. senator is breaking the Senate silence — and even going further, explaining how U.S. support for the war has enabled the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy spoke out about the crisis on the Senate floor Tuesday, while showing pictures of starving Yemeni children. His remarks went much further than those of most public officials, not shying away from the reality that the cholera epidemic could never have taken place without U.S. support. For U.S. officials, the difficulty in publicly addressing the crisis is caught up in U.S. complicity, given that the disease and starvation in Yemen is not the result of a random hurricane or an earthquake, but the expected result of deliberate actions taken by the United

Hunger, disease kill 130 Yemeni children daily as Saudi-imposed blockade lingers

A prominent international charity group says an estimated 130 children or more are losing their lives every day in Yemen due to “ extreme hunger and disease, ” warning the situation will deteriorate unless a crippling blockade imposed on the impoverished nation by a Saudi-led military coalition is lifted immediately. “ Without urgent, unhindered access for humanitarian organizations and an increase in funding, Save the Children is warning half of these children will most likely go without treatment, ” said the UK-based group in a report on Thursday, warning that “ if left untreated, approximately 20-30 percent of children with severe acute malnutrition will die each year. ” The warning came less than two weeks after Saudi Arabia announced that it was shutting down Yemen’s air, sea, and land borders, after Yemeni Houthi Ansarullah fighters targeted an international airport near the Saudi capital of Riyadh with a cruise missile in retaliation for ceaseless bom

UN agencies plead for an end to Yemen blockade or ‘thousands will die’

The heads of three UN agencies issued a fresh plea on Thursday for the Saudi-led military coalition to lift its blockade on Yemen. Without aid shipments, “ untold thousands of innocent victims, among them many children, will die, ” the heads of the World Food Program, UNICEF and the World Health Organization said. One million children are at risk from a fast-spreading diphtheria outbreak, and even if the blockade is only partially lifted, an additional 3.2 million people will be pushed into hunger, the joint statement said , as cited by Reuters. https://www.rt.com/newsline/410055-un-agencies-yemen-blockade/

Lebanon slams Riyadh for roles behind Hariri's resignation

Lebanon's President Michel Aoun on Wednesday criticized Saudi Arabia on the background of Prime Minister Saad Hariri's resignation, saying that Riyadh has carried out an "act of aggression" against Lebanon. " We consider Prime Minister Saad Hariri as being detained in Saudi Arabia and this is an act of aggression against Lebanon, " Aoun said during a meeting with the National Audio&Visual Council. Aoun said that nothing justified Hariri's continued stay in Saudi Arabia, now into day 12. " This contradicts the Vienna Treaty and human rights, " said Aoun, according to the president's Twitter account. He stressed " we cannot keep waiting and lose time, because state affairs cannot be put on hold. " Reiterating his previous comments regarding Hariri's resignation, Aoun said that it wasn't possible to complete the resignation formality as Hariri had announced it from abroad. Aoun added " h
