The coordinated economic war on Venezuela briefly explained

Today in the corporate media, Venezuela’s economic problems are used to paint the country as a failed state, in need of foreign-backed regime change. To get the Bolivarian government’s side of the crisis, Abby Martin interviews Venezuela’s Minister of Economic Planning, Ricardo Menéndez. They discuss shortages, oil dependency, the role of the US-backed opposition movement and more. The Empire Files joined him in Cojedes, Venezuela, where he was speaking to mass community meetings, organizing the population to fight against what he calls an economic war. globinfo freexchange In a specific part of the interview, Menéndez explains briefly the economic war launched by the US empire against Venezuela: We are the victims of an attack to the Bolivar, the national currency. This charge against our currency has become evident on certain websites based outside Venezuela, where fictitiously, without any rationale or economic proof to back it up, they determine a pol

From al-Qaeda terrorist to CIA “Freedom Fighter”: one man’s journey from Europe to Libya

In the bloody terror-fueled conflicts that have been waged by the U.S. and NATO in Libya and Syria, one man has helped to recruit so-called “freedom fighters” and unleash them on those countries’ innocent civilians. But he has yet to be brought to justice. by Steven Sahiounie Part 4 - Qatar: Trump’s scapegoat So what has changed so drastically to allow for a touted “freedom fighter” like al-Harati to now be labeled as a terrorist? The difference is in U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced during a recent trip to the Middle East that his administration will look at things differently. Trump has singled out Qatar as the sacrificial lamb on the altar in the U.S.’ fight against terrorism – despite the fact that Qatar is just one of several parties who have supported Syrian terrorists, parties ranging from the Free Syrian Army to ISIS. Someone has to pay the price – and this time, it is Qatar. Qatar does support the Muslim Brotherhood, as does Turkey

Varoufakis explains why economics is not science

globinfo freexchange Russell Brand discusses with Yanis Varoufakis what happens when you take on the political, financial and media elite, and how radical reform can occur. Through accounts of his confrontations with the IMF, European institutions and the German government they examine where true power lies and how it is wielded. In a particular part of the interview, Varoufakis explains simply why economics is not science:           I call it organized religion with equations, superstition. The only way to become free of superstition is through overcoming. But you need to study. I've always pissed off my academic colleagues and other economists who actually believe that is real science what they are doing.        Our mathematical models of the weather can be judged by objective reality. If I am a meteorologist and come up with a prediction that tomorrow there is going to be a heatwave in Leicester square, all we have to do is to wait until tomorrow to see i

When bots learn to lie

An AI chatbot programmed to negotiate with humans has figured out that lying can be a useful tactic in bargaining – an ominous sign for those who believe humans will one day bow at the electronic feet of robot overlords. In an experiment by Facebook’s AI researchers, chatbots were paired off and set the task of dividing a collection of items among themselves. Each item was designated a certain value based on how much the chatbot cared about them. Researchers noted that the haggling bots were quick to discover that lying about their interest in an item could bring them favorable results. “ There were cases where agents initially feigned interest in a valueless item, only to later ‘compromise’ by conceding it – an effective negotiating tactic that people use regularly, ” the researchers said in a statement. “ This behavior was not programmed by the researchers but was discovered by the bot as a method for trying to achieve its goals. ” The AI system le
