The ECB's Noose Around Greece: How Central Banks Harness Governments

by Ellen Brown Remember when the infamous Goldman Sachs delivered a thinly-veiled threat to the Greek Parliament in December, warning them to elect a pro-austerity prime minister or risk having central bank liquidity cut off to their banks? It seems the European Central Bank (headed by Mario Draghi, former managing director of Goldman Sachs International) has now made good on the threat. The week after the leftwing Syriza candidate Alexis Tsipras was sworn in as prime minister, the ECB announced that it would no longer accept Greek government bonds and government-guaranteed debts as collateral for central bank loans to Greek banks. The banks were reduced to getting their central bank liquidity through “Emergency Liquidity Assistance” (ELA), which is at high interest rates and can also be terminated by the ECB at will. In an interview reported in the German magazine Der Spiegel on March 6th, Alexis Tsipras said that the ECB was “holding a noose around Greece’s neck.

A new 1.3 bn palace for the "empire"

... while at the same time, its nationals sink to poverty “ Protestors in Frankfurt gathered to spoil the opening of the European Central Bank’s new €1.3 billion campus. For many Europeans, the huge luxury offices built in the midst of an economic recession represents everything that is wrong with the institution. The €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) complex, which includes two towers and a renovated historic vegetable warehouse opened March 18, 3 years late and nearly €350 million over budget.” “ The ‘Blockupy’ group, a mix of anti-capitalist and anti-austerity protestors from across Europe, blames the bank for the recession and unemployment that has gripped the eurozone. [...] Police have erected a security zone around the new 120,000 square meter bank. The territory, barricaded by barb wire, remains “fully operational” according to the police. While protestors shout on the streets, bank President Mario Draghi will host the inauguration ceremony with Frankfurt

Iran, Hezbollah left off US terror threat listing

“ Iran and Hezbollah were left out of an annual terrorism threat assessment report offered in late February to the US Senate by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Iran and Hezbollah had been fixtures on the annual report before 2015. Iran’s efforts to fight Sunni extremists, including the so-called Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIL or ISIS), were touted in the unclassified version of the Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Communities, released recently.” “ Both Iran and Hezbollah were included in the ‘Terrorism’ section of the 2014 version of the threat assessment report, which said both 'continue to directly threaten the interests of U.S. allies. Hizballah [sic] has increased its global terrorist activity in recent years to a level that we have not seen since the 1990s.' Iran was included in the ‘Terrorism’ section of previous threat assessments, in 2011, 2012, and 2013.” “ Meanwhile, talks regarding Iran’s nuclear

Global economic balance continues changing towards BRICS

“ The membership of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is set to expand further, with France, Germany and Italy reported to have all agreed to join the China-proposed institution. The decision of the three European countries, which was revealed by British newspaper The Financial Times and yet to be officially announced, came in the wake of Britain's application last week to be a founding member of the 50-billion-U.S.-dollar bank. Meanwhile, Australian leaders have been lining up in the past few days to voice support for joining the AIIB, which marks a conspicuous U-turn from the cabinet's previous stance.” “ In addition, South Korea, Switzerland and Luxembourg have reportedly been pondering whether to join the new international initiative. As regards Japan, Chinese Finance Minister Lou Jiwei said earlier this month that the chance to be an AIIB founding member is available for all Asian countries including Japan by March 31, and the ball is in Japan'

Cold War 2.0 : Russia to deploy long-range nuclear bombers to Crimea for drills

“ Officials in Moscow have announced plans to send some of their strategic missile-carriers to Crimea a year after the peninsula separated from Ukraine and rejoined the Russian Federation. A source in Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday that Moscow would deploy Tupolev 22-M3 bomber jets to Crimea as part of a drill to test the combat readiness of tens of thousands of Russian troops across the country. The source, however, did not specify an exact date for the deployment of the bombers.” “ Russia had previous plans for redeployment of the Tupolev bombers to Crimea, a Black Sea peninsula which was used to support the Russian Navy during the Soviet era. Moscow’s announcement comes as Crimea is celebrating this week the first anniversary of its reunification with the Russian Federation, which was decided in a referendum in March 2014 after a legal government in Kiev was toppled by anti-Russia forces earlier in the year.” “ On Sunday, Putin said in a documentary
