Four million people need food aid in drought-hit Zimbabwe

The number of Zimbabweans requiring food aid has risen to 4 million, up from 3 million initially, state media said Tuesday. An El Nino-induced drought has hit Zimbabwe hard and last month it appealed for $1.6 billion in aid to help pay for grain and other food, Reuters reported. Government stocks of maize, the staple food, were 91,326 tons as of March 10 – enough to last three months, according to Public Service, Labor and Social Welfare Minister Prisca Mupfumira. Car explodes in central Berlin, 1 dead

A car has exploded in central Berlin on Tuesday morning, leaving at least one person dead, local media report. Police suspect that an explosive was inside the vehicle, but are not certain about the exact cause of the blast. A Volkswagen Passat has exploded in Bismarckstrasse while driving along the road, Berlin police said on Tuesday. The driver died of serious injuries before an ambulance arrived. Police warned that a second blast may happen shortly, the Berliner Zeitung reported. Law enforcement officers also urged residents to close windows and refrain from using the street. As Syria's war reaches another grim milestone today, refugees fleeing the five-year conflict face greater hurdles to finding safety while international solidarity with its victims is failing to match and reflect the scale and seriousness of the humanitarian tragedy.
