Rational Agents: the first bots that entrapped humans into cyberspace

globinfo freexchange The effect of the Iraq war had been very powerful. Not only did millions of people feel that they had been lied to over the weapons of mass destruction, but there was a deeper feeling that whatever they did or said had no effect. That despite the mass protests and the fears and the warnings, the war had happened anyway. Liberals, radicals and a whole new generation of young people retreated. They turned instead to another world that was free of this hypocrisy and the corruption of politics. They went into cyberspace.   By now, cyberspace had become even more sophisticated and responsive to human interaction. The online world was full of algorithms that could analyse and predict human behaviour. The man behind much of this was a scientist called Judea Pearl. He is the godfather of modern Artificial Intelligence. Pearl’s breakthrough had been to use what were called Bayesian Belief Networks. They were systems that could predict behaviour, even when th

Bernie Sanders supports Trump's order to kill TPP

Donald Trump has officially killed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the controversial trade deal that became a lightning rod for critics on the left and right during the election campaign. Following a meeting with a dozen executives from US manufacturers on Monday, Trump signed an executive order formally ending the US’s participation in the TPP. While the move was largely symbolic – leading Republicans and Democrats had both come out against the deal – it underlined the Trump administration’s determination to end decades of White House support for increased free trade. The president and Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders both attacked TPP, a free trade agreement among the US and 11 other countries, on the campaign trail. Sanders praised Trump’s decision, saying TPP is “ dead and gone ”. “ Now is the time to develop a new trade policy that helps working families, not just multinational corporations, ” Sanders said in a statement. “ If

Israel approves 2,500 new West Bank housing units

Israel will build 2,500 additional homes in the settlements in the occupied West Bank territories, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced. Most of them will expand the existing settlement areas. The plans have been authorized by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and are intended to allow the settlements “ to maintain regular daily life, ” the ministry said in a statement. “ It will be one of the largest industrial zones in the West Bank, in which we are planning to set up warehouse and fuel storage infrastructure, along with other elements, ” the statement reads. The news comes days after Israel announced a similar expansion of housing units in East Jerusalem. The Israeli settlement policy goes against international law and has been the subject of much criticism from other nations, including the US under the Obama administration. Observers believe that the announcements, made in the wake of Donald Trump’s inaugurati

Trident whistleblower tells RT he ‘witnessed 4 unreported missile test failures’

Royal Navy whistleblower William McNeilly leaked details about a number of serious test fire issues aboard Britain’s Trident nuclear submarine fleet a whole year before the June 2016 misfire that sent a missile careening towards the US. McNeilly published a dossier highlighting a range of safety and security failures aboard Trident submarines in May 2015 – more than a year before the latest mishap. The Royal Navy submariner was detained and quietly discharged in June of that year. Senior officers even sought to discredit McNeilly’s claims by portraying him as an ill-informed junior sailor. Speaking exclusively to RT on Tuesday, McNeilly said he now feels vindicated. “ I warned about this exact event over a year before it happened. I was in the MCC / Missile Control Center during the end of patrol tests in early 2015 and I witnessed with my own eyes the Trident system fail its simulated missile launch tests. ” McNeilly claims to have seen Trident “ fa

Trump administration threatens response to Beijing’s South China Sea territory grab

Cold War 2.0 The standoff between China and the US looks set to reach new highs, as the Trump administration promises steps to prevent Beijing’s takeover of “ international territories ” in the strategic waterway in the South China Sea. “ The US is going to make sure that we protect our interests there, ” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday. Journalists asked him if he agreed with the statement delivered by Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson on January 11, that Washington will from now on take a tougher stance with Beijing over its actions in the South China Sea. “ It’s a question of if those islands are in fact in international waters and not part of China proper, then yeah, we’re going to make sure that we defend international territories from being taken over by one country, ” Spicer added. The area in question represents a route worth $4.5 trillion in trade per year. China, over the past year, has expanded its takeover of island

The real reason Trump killed TPP

US President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal will inevitably put a similar deal with the European Union on hold, but Trump will still go ahead and broker other trade deals that continue to favor US multinationals, Sputnik has been told. Trump signed a presidential memorandum withdrawing from the TPP trade deal — with Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru — within hours of his first full day in office. It was a mark of his presidential campaign that he would favor home workers and discriminate against cheap labor being used to manufacture goods imported into the US — even by US owned companies. However, campaign groups say he will now embark on a series of deals with individual countries — the UK likely being the first — which will still favor US interests over others. " TPP was a bad deal, that would have pushed a corporate der

Russian long-range bombers destroy ISIS arms depots in Deir ez-Zor, Syria

Syria Six Russian long-range Tu-22M3 bombers on Tuesday carried out airstrikes on Islamic State arms and ammunition depots in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Pakistan conducts first test nuclear-capable surface-to-surface missile

Pakistan has for the first time successfully test-fired its surface-to-surface ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads, the military press department said. The missile, called Ababeel, has a maximum range of 2,200km and “ is capable of delivering multiple warheads, using Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, ” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media branch of the Pakistani armed forces, said in a press release. It also confirmed that the missile can carry nuclear warheads and is able to “ engage multiple targets with high precision, defeating the enemy’s hostile radars. ” It was developed as an answer to the “ growing … ballistic missile defense ” capabilities of Pakistan’s regional neighbors and is designed to “ further reinforce deterrence, ” the press release says, apparently referring to India’s nuclear arsenal. India tested its own anti-ballistic missile system allegedly capable of intercepting a nucle
