Tempe railway tragedy: Protests in 365 cities across Greece and abroad

Protests are set to take place in 365 cities across Greece and abroad to mark the second anniversary of the Tempe railway disaster which claimed the lives of 57 people.  According to the protest map, demonstrations will occur in 252 cities in Greece and 112 cities abroad, with the slogan “I have no oxygen” and the main demand to end the cover-up and hold those responsible accountable, regardless of their position. https://thepressproject.gr/tempe-railway-tragedy-protests-in-365-cities-across-greece-and-abroad/ The Tempe train disaster on 28 February 2023, which claimed 57 lives, exposed critical failures in Greece’s railway safety systems and sparked widespread allegations of a cover-up. Despite repeated warnings from railway workers, key safety upgrades were never implemented, and investigations have since revealed political interference, missing evidence, and potential fuel smuggling on the freight train. Two years on, mass protests, new forensic findings, and fresh legal battles...

USAID Falls, Exposing a Giant Network of US-Funded “Independent” Media

by Alan Macleod  Part 3 - “Independent” Media, Brought to You By the US Government The cuts to USAID, therefore, have highlighted that the United States has consciously created a vast matrix encompassing thousands of journalists worldwide, all producing pro-U.S. content. Yet, in discussing the USAID cuts, corporate media has insisted on describing these outlets as “independent.” “Independent outlets in [the] former Soviet Union are poised to be hurt by temporary shut down at key US agency,” wrote The Financial Times . “From Ukraine to Afghanistan, independent media organizations across the world are being forced to lay off staff or shut down after losing USAID funding,” The Guardian told its readers. Meanwhile, The Washington Post went with “Independent media in Russia, Ukraine lose their funding with USAID freeze.” Perhaps most notably, even organizations like Reporters Without Borders (RSF) did the same. Clayton Weimers, executive director of RSF U.S., commented, “Non-profit ne...

The Pentagon is Recruiting Elon Musk to Help Them Win a Nuclear War

Donald Trump has announced his intention to build a gigantic anti-ballistic missile system to counter Chinese and Russian nuclear weapons, and he is recruiting Elon Musk to help him. The Pentagon has long dreamed of constructing an American “Iron Dome.” The technology is couched in the defense language – i.e., to make America safe again. But like its Israeli counterpart, it would function as an offensive weapon, giving the United States the ability to launch nuclear attacks anywhere in the world without having to worry about the consequences of a similar response. This power could upend the fragile peace maintained by decades of mutually assured destruction, a doctrine that has underpinned global stability since the 1940s.   by Alan Macleod  Part 5 - Global Power An example of how crucial Musk and his tech empire are to the continuation of U.S. global ambitions can be found in Ukraine. Today, around 47,000 Starlinks operate inside the country. These portable satellite dishes, ...

US ADMITS Russia Was Provoked Into Invading Ukraine!

The Jimmy Dore Show   Two Trump administration officials publicly declined to characterize Russia as the provocateur in its war against Ukraine, despite the war having begun when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Asked during an interview with “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream whether it was fair to say Russia attacked Ukraine unprovoked three years ago tomorrow, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said it was “fair to say it’s a very complicated situation.”   Trump Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff said in a CNN interview Sunday that the war in Ukraine, “irrespective of who started it, needs to end.” He then appeared to defend Russia’s perspective by arguing that the war was not necessarily provoked by Russia. Guest host Aaron Maté and John Mearsheimer discuss this narrative shift from the administration which critics are predictably describing as the regurgitation of “Russian talking points.”      Related: Confirmed: US imperiali...

Jeffrey Sachs tries to make Europeans act reasonably

globinfo freexchange   "To be an enemy of the U.S. is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal." Quoting former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, renowned U.S. economist Jeffrey Sachs urged Europe to have a "realistic" and independent foreign policy in a recent speech at the European Parliament.   https://english.news.cn/20250223/60f2ee53e17e4940a97984da6e60108b/c.html

USAID Falls, Exposing a Giant Network of US-Funded “Independent” Media

by Alan Macleod  Part 2 - Media on the Dole: Cash Flow Crisis Hits Hard Perhaps the country most affected by this sudden change in policy is Ukraine. While criticizing the decision, Oksana Romanyuk, the Director of Ukraine’s Institute for Mass Information, revealed that almost 90% of the country’s media are bankrolled by USAID, including many that have no other source of funding. Olga Rudenko, the editor-in-chief of the Kyiv Independent (an outlet MintPress previously revealed receives funds from Washington), also denounced the decision. Last month, she wrote that the USAID freeze is a greater threat to independent Ukrainian journalism than either the COVID-19 pandemic or the Russian invasion. The Kyiv Independent has since asked its readers to support a funding drive to keep pro-U.S. Ukrainian media alive. Other large Ukrainian outlets, such as Hromadske and Bihus.Info , have done the same. Anti-government Cuban media have been plunged into a similar predicament. Miami-based C...

Trump's Ukraine talks aim to divide Russia from China. Can he do it?

Geopolitical Economy Report   The US government's talks with Russia are more about China than Ukraine. Donald Trump admitted he wants to "un-unite" Russia and China, in a reverse of the divide-and-conquer strategy used by Nixon and Kissinger in the 1970s. Will Trump succeed? Ben Norton explains why the United States sees China as the main threat to its global imperial dominance.      Related:   Why Putin could be completely wrong about Trump   US imperialists finally got what they feared in Ukraine under Trump

Javier Milei is destroying Argentina's economy, making it a resource colony for foreign oligarchs

Geopolitical Economy Report   Argentina's President Javier Milei, a self-declared libertarian and "anarcho-capitalist", is promoting crypto scams and overseeing rapid deindustrialization. Manufacturing and construction are collapsing, while the financial sector, mining, and agriculture grow. Donald Trump and Elon Musk praise Milei, as the majority of Argentines live in poverty. The real economy is in crisis, but rich foreign investors rejoice as the stock market booms. Ben Norton explains how Argentina is being turned into a resource colony.

US imperialists finally got what they feared in Ukraine under Trump

globinfo freexchange   As we wrote back in 2022, a document by the top US think tank RAND Corporation was impressively revealing the goals of US imperialism regarding a Russian invasion of Ukraine.    It seems that the US imperialists managed to achieve some of these goals. For example, the RAND report revealed that the primary goal of the US was to make " Russia to overextend itself militarily ". A secondary pursuit in the geopolitical  battlefield was to intensify " NATO’s relationship with Sweden and Finland ", which was achieved beyond target, through the inclusion of both Sweden and Finland in the NATO alliance, as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.  However, the RAND report was also identifying the dangers of provoking Russia to take military action. The US imperialists were acknowledging that such a development could also " increase the loss of Ukrainian lives and territory or result in a disadvantageous peace settlement. This would generall...

USAID Falls, Exposing a Giant Network of US-Funded “Independent” Media

by Alan Macleod  Part 1 The Trump administration’s decision to pause USAID funding has plunged hundreds of so-called “independent media” outlets into crisis, thereby exposing a worldwide network of thousands of journalists, all working to promote U.S. interests in their home countries. In late January, President Trump—along with help from the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk—began implementing sweeping changes to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on the premise that the organization’s promotion of liberal and progressive causes was a gigantic waste of money. The group’s website and Twitter account have disappeared amid widespread speculation that it will cease to exist or be folded into Marco Rubio’s State Department.  The pausing of aid immediately sent shockwaves across the planet, not least in the international media, many of which, unbeknownst to their readers, are totally dependent on financing from Washington. In tot...

Did a Trump executive order just cripple the global US regime change network?

With federal funding paused to USAID, pro-Western media outlets from Ukraine to Nicaragua are panhandling for donations, and a multi-billion dollar regime change apparatus is in panic mode.   Part 5 - Georgia not on the Trump admin’s mind   The Republic of Georgia has been the site of a series of color revolution efforts since the start of 2023, all in response to the government’s successful push to compel the more than 25,000 foreign-financed organizations in the country to disclose their funding sources. Western-backed NGOs and activist groups have been at the forefront of all these attempted putsches. Unsurprisingly, this shadow army of previously US-funded foot soldiers are furious about the Trump administration’s “foreign development assistance” cutoff. By contrast, the Georgian government appears delighted. Parliamentary leader Mamuka Mdinaradze has even suggested the highly controversial law on foreign funding transparency “might not be needed at all anymore” after Trum...

Trump humiliates the liberal class again - appears as the global peace advocate!

globinfo freexchange   Imagine that. It was the "fascist dictator", the "danger for Democracy", the one who came suddenly with a "radical" peace proposal to Russia and China. Trump called for a mutual reduction of the military budget by half, as well as for denuclearization! He managed to make the pseudo-democratic liberal heads explode again, by attacking them from the Left!

The Empire Self-Destructs

We share the pathologies of all dying empires with their mixture of buffoonery, rampant corruption, military fiascos, economic collapse and savage state repression.   by Chris Hedges and Eunice Wong  The billionaires, Christian fascists, grifters, psychopaths, imbeciles, narcissists and deviants who have seized control of Congress, the White House and the courts, are cannibalizing the machinery of state. These self-inflicted wounds, characteristic of all late empires, will cripple and destroy the tentacles of power. And then, like a house of cards, the empire will collapse. Blinded by hubris, unable to fathom the empire’s diminishing power, the mandarins in the Trump administration have retreated into a fantasy world where hard and unpleasant facts no longer intrude. They sputter incoherent absurdities while they usurp the Constitution and replace diplomacy, multilateralism and politics with threats and loyalty oaths. Agencies and departments, created and funded by acts of Con...

What is a 'multipolar' world? China says equality; Trump & Marco Rubio say imperial rivalry

Geopolitical Economy Report   It's now widely acknowledged we are in a multipolar world, but the definition of "multipolarity" is not clear. Donald Trump and Marco Rubio think it means a return to great power competition with imperial spheres of influence, whereas China and much of the Global South say "equality among all countries regardless of size". Ben Norton explains the geopolitical divide.

Media COVERS UP Brutal Police Attacks On Columbia Students Protesting Israel

Prior to her expulsion for organizing against the Columbia-funded Israeli genocide in Gaza, she lived in Palestine with her partner while working for a local mutual aid network. With federal funding paused to USAID, pro-Western media outlets from Ukraine to Nicaragua are panhandling for donations, and a multi-billion dollar regime change apparatus is in panic mode.   Part 4 - Has the US balked at balkanizing the Balkans?   Across the West Balkans, USAID, self-avowed CIA front the National Endowment for Democracy, George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and the panoply of NGOs and media outlets have infiltrated every conceivable sphere of public life. Following the 1992 – 1995 civil war, Bosnia and Herzegovina was methodically transformed into a de facto EU and US colony, with all basic functions of the state hijacked by foreign interests. Some concern about the imperial project found its way into mainstream media at the time. The New York Times warned in 1998 that US domination of Bosnia “raised troubling questions about how the state will work without continued infusions of outside aid and direct international supervision.” A senior foreign governmen...
