Cold War 2.0 : The Russians did it again over Cornwall

“ British RAF Typhoon fighter jets have been scrambled in response to two Russian Bear long-range bombers spotted off the coast of Cornwall, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said. The Russian bombers were in international airspace.” “ Thursday’s interception follows a similar event in January when two Russian Bear bombers flying close to UK airspace were intercepted by RAF Typhoons. The British fighter jets were scrambled from bases at Lossiemouth in Scotland and Coningsby in eastern England, according to the MoD.” “ The UK Foreign Office summoned the Russian ambassador to lodge a complaint about the flight of Russian military jets over the English Channel, which authorities claimed posed a danger to passenger aircraft. [...] Russia's Air Force spokesman said the air patrol flights were carried out according to an approved plan, and conducted in strict compliance with international regulations of the use of airspace above neutral waters, without v

India lifts ban on bank gold Imports: Gold can again be used as loan collateral

“ One week ago we reported that central bank purchases of gold in 2014 were the second highest in the past 50 years, driven by purchases out of Iraq, Kazakhstan and - most of all - Russia, with no offsetting selling. But what about other more conventional sources of demand? Take jewelry, which while very strong in the beginning of the century, dropped off after the Great Financial Crisis, and then tumbled again after India imposed numerous restrictions on gold imports, which however merely forced the local population to find novel ways of smuggling gold into the country.” “ In short, even with extended draconian measures created by India to prevent capital account outflows as a result of uncontrolled gold imports (which still take place only 'under the table'), a whopping 1000 tons of gold ended up in the form of gold trinkets in 2014 mostly in India, and to a lesser extend in China.” “ All of that is about to change: earlier today India's Economic Times re

Will they someday take Berlin?

globinfo freexchange It is remarkable how the second eurozone economy uses the same anti-democratic methods like the previous government in Greece. From china.org.cn: French Prime Minister Manuel Valls on Tuesday decided to pass the controversial 'Law on Growth and Activity' via a decree and without lawmakers' vote, a move that could trigger the government's collapse. 'I won't take any risks. The interest of France urges us to do so. Nothing will make us retreat,' Valls told the Parliament. 'There was probably a majority for this bill, but it was not certain, so I decided to take no chances. I couldn't risk seeing a plan so crucial to our economy be rejected,' he added. With a series of laws presented by Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron, the Socialists aimed at unblocking economy of the eurozone's second leading power, which is haunted by a long-running rise in unemploy

Lobbies' puppet admits: “Troika insulted Greece’s dignity”

“ In his statements during a meeting of the European Economic and Social Committee of the European Parliament, EC President Jean Claude Juncker stressed that the Troika insulted Greece’s dignity , while he described it as 'undemocratic' and further noted that that 'mistakes were made'.” “ Furthermore, Jean Claude Juncker mentioned along with his moral support to the Greek people, that the Troika lacks the necessary 'democratic legalization'.” “ ' The Troika insulted Greece’s dignity. Ministers deserve to confer with their counterparts and not with employees ', stated the EC President.” “ Finally, Jean Claude Juncker stressed that he expects of the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the Commission to continue their work and added that the European Commission will examine the issue of Troika 'when the time is right'.” “ SYRIZA MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis reproduced via Twitter and Facebook J

12 risks that threaten human civilisation

globinfo freexchange A study by the Global Challenges Foundation aims on a first approach about potential threats that could actually destroy human civilization. The study claims 12 major threats belonging to four general sectors of current risks, exogenic risks, emerging risks and global policy risks. Briefly: 1. Extreme Climate Change As for all risks there are uncertainties in the estimates, and warming could be much more extreme than the middle estimates suggest. Feedback loops could mean global average temperatures increase by 4°C or even 6°C over pre-industrial levels. Feedbacks could be the release of methane from permafrost or the dieback of the Amazon rainforest. The impact of global warming would be strongest in poorer countries, which could become completely uninhabitable for the highest range of warming. Mass deaths and famines, social collapse and mass migration are certainly possible in this scenario. Combined with shocks to the agriculture and
