Snowden confirms intentions to return to US if guaranteed fair trial

US government whistleblower Edward Snowden, currently residing in Russia, has confirmed that he would return to the United States if Washington guaranteed him a fair trial. “ I’ve told the government I would return if they would guarantee a fair trial where I can make a public interest defense of why this was done and allow a jury to decide… The United States criticizes me for being in Russia, but at the same time, they won’t let me leave, ” Snowden said Saturday, as quoted by the WMUR9 television channel addressing the New Hampshire Liberty Forum via Skype. In 2013, Snowden started revealing classified documents pertaining to mass surveillance practices carried out by US authorities around the globe. The same year, Russia granted the whistleblower temporary asylum for one year. In August 2014, Snowden received a three-year residence permit to live in Russia. In the United States, he faces up to 30 years in prison on charges of espionage and theft of gove

Turkey demands US support against Kurds

Ankara has urged Washington to unconditionally support the expansion of its battle against the terror threat, in particular Kurdish militias, warning that those hindering Turkey’s right to self-defense will be considered terrorists and acted upon accordingly. “ The only thing we expect from our US ally is to support Turkey with no ifs or buts, ” Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told a news conference after a five-hour security meeting with cabinet and state officials. Following the car bomb attack on a military convoy in Ankara this week which left 28 people dead, a breakaway faction of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) claimed responsibility for the attack, and Turkey has vowed to intensify its fight against the Kurds both at home and in Syria. “ If 28 Turkish lives have been claimed through a terrorist attack we can only expect them [the US] to say any threat against Turkey is a threat against them, ” Davutoglu stated. 'They burned hospitals': Venezuelans against Right-Wing amnesty

A survivor of Venezuela's 2014 violence spoke out Saturday amid calls from the country's legislators to grant amnesty to those convicted of organizing and inciting the deadly clashes. “ They burned hospitals and health clinics,” said Oscar Carrero, a truck driver who witnessed the events firsthand. Dozens of government-run health clinics were the targets of arson attacks in February and March 2014, when anti-government demonstrators took to the streets to demand the resignation of recently elected President Nicolas Maduro. Internationally, the anti-government demonstrations were widely described as peaceful, though Carrero's experience was anything but. During the protests, Carrero was driving a delivery truck packed with medical supplies when he was attacked by demonstrators. “ They threw nails at the truck. The truck flipped over, and then they started throwing things … rocks, mortar. Then they threw a papita,” he told teleSUR. Papitas

Lobby-occupied bureaucrats attempt to bypass the enormous popular opposition against ISDS

ISDS [investor-state dispute settlement system], is included in thousands of international agreements. It allows companies to sue governments if policy changes – even ones to protect public health or the environment – are deemed to affect their profits. These lawsuits bypass domestic courts and take place before an international tribunal of arbitrators, three private lawyers who decide whether private profits or public interests are more important. Across the world, investor-state tribunals have granted big business billions of dollars from taxpayers’ pockets – often in compensation for public interest measures. Corporate Europe Observatory When the European Commission proposed to include this powerful legal regime for corporations in the trade deal under negotiation with the United States, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP, this triggered massive opposition: over 97% of a record 150,000 participants rejected such corporate privileges in

Varoufakis: They want to transfer memorandum to Paris!

In his recent interview at The Press Project , former Greek Minister of Finance, Yanis Varoufakis, stated that the goal of the Troika (ECB, IMF, European Commission), is to transfer the memorandum (the catastrophic neoliberal policies imposed to Greece and others) to Paris! He also referred to the reasons of creating DiEM25, the new pan-European political party, explaining that the problems and the crises are pan-European. He also stated that Social-Democracy has been bankrupted in Europe and that the Left is still under a regime of collective and total defeat. He also said that the target of DiEM25 will be to transform EU - which was created as a cartel - into a space of common benefit and Democracy, because when the corporate capitalism will collapse, it is not certain whether it will be replaced by a humanistic society. Blog's comment: The memorandum will go even to Germany, because this is exactly the model that they want to impose. Therefore

Kurds cut IS strategic route between Syria, Iraq

The Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Thursday cut a strategic supply line for the IS between Syria's northern province of al-Raqqa and the Iraqi city of Mosul, a monitor group reported. The SDF cut the IS strategic supply line in the city of Shadadi in Syria's northeastern province of al-Hasakah. The road connects al-Raqqa, the de facto capital of the terror group with its stronghold in Iraq's northern city of Mosul, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The SDF progress in the northeastern province of al-Hasakah, namely the vicinity of the city of Shadadi has enabled them to cut the supply line between Shadadi and Mosul and Shadadi-al-Raqqa. The UK-based watchdog group said the SDF captured on Thursday eight towns from the IS in al-Hasakah, adding that the IS fear of losing Shadadi pushed them to move their families from Shadadi to Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour, where the enjoy a considerable sway.
