Part 2 - Sanchez a red rag to Israel, Trump, and the far right
Sanchez further worsened his position by coming into Trump's crosshairs. The reason was Spain's reluctance to increase its military spending—as the US demanded of all NATO countries—in order to generate profit for American defense industries and extra money for politicians who are being bribed by them.
Spain gives 2.13% of its GDP to military spending—whereas Trump has demanded a 5% contribution—leading him to beat even his own eccentricity at the recent summit of the military alliance in Ankara, through a tirade against Spain: "I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please, including visits ... Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless, bad people,” he declared, prompting every serious person to view Spain in a new, more appreciative light.
Sanchez gave a lesson in political principles by becoming an exception in the European social democracy which is characterized by subservience to imperialism and opportunism, starting within his own country. He was elected leader of the social-democratic party PSOE in 2014, but in 2016, the party barons forced him to resign because he refused to form a coalition government with the Right.
In 2017, he regained the leadership with the help of his party members, whom he had addressed by emphasizing the need for democracy. In 2018, he was elected Prime Minister, relying on a marginal and fragile majority. In 2023, he granted amnesty to those who had participated in the Catalan independence referendum, thereby healing a festering wound that had divided Spain—while naturally provoking the rage of the Right.
Sanchez became a red rag to the European Right as well, following his decision to legalize 500,000 undocumented migrants (in a country of 50 million inhabitants and out of a total of 1.2 million undocumented migrants).
In the context of this migration crisis, the attacks launched against him by the global Right—ranging from Elon Musk to Italian neo-fascist Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who called for the suspension of Spain’s participation in the Schengen Area - were perfectly normal.
Although Meloni’s reaction was targeting the domestic audience—seeking to beat the anti-migrant demagoguery of far-right former General Roberto Vannacci, who is steadily approaching her own voter base—she managed to transform the Spanish migration issue into a European crisis.
Morocco was willing to do the dirty work against Sánchez—at the behest of Israel, Trump, and the European far right—through an operation it knows well: by using impoverished and desperate migrants.
It did again in 2021, when it pushed 6,000 migrants into the enclave of Ceuta in a single day to punish Madrid for adopting a lenient stance toward the long-standing separatist Polisario Front, which—with Algeria’s backing—seeks independence for Western Sahara.
Spain has a particular interest in Western Sahara (which some African states have recognized as the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic) because it administered the territory until 1975. Ultimately, in 2022, Spain adopted Morocco's position—namely, limited autonomy for Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty—prompting Algeria to recall its ambassador from Madrid.
