Middle class civil war in Greece: latest update and conclusions

by system failure

Latest news from the front of the civil war in Greece between groups of middle-class, show that the government frequently uses the weapon of social automatism to break a compact massive social reaction against catastrophic austerity measures on the majority of citizens. This tactic seems to remain highly effective as it brings controversy between various social groups and highlights conflicting interests by bringing them on surface.

While the anxiety of parents for their children's success in national exams for their entrance to higher education universities and institutions culminates, as they seek for better future opportunities inside the storm of financial crisis, the government took advantage of this fact by passing a legislation against teachers in a critical and carefully chosen time, just before the national exams. In this way managed to open another front in the civil war of the middle class conducted in Greece (http://failedevolution.blogspot.gr/2012/11/a-new-doctrine-with-old-recipe.html), and turned candidates of higher education and their parents against teachers who threatened to react within the exams with a nationwide strike.

But beyond this new front opening between groups of the middle class, the ruling regime managed to achieve two more things.

The first is that, immediately after the first surprise move of this legislation just before the national exams, the government made a second hit against teachers with the measure of conscription. As part of the experiment "Greece" conducted by the economic elites using politicians-puppets, other "useful" sub-experiments are tested, such as that of civil conscription, creating a precedent and imposing slowly this idea to be used in future if necessary without resistance and other obstacles. In the experiment "Greece", the measure of conscription paves the way for similar actions in other countries, initially in those who are under a memorandum condition, in order to suppress mass resistance and prevent general strikes. Under the pretext of economic crisis, we are entering into an era of undemocratic procedures simulating authoritarian regimes, just as the financial elites want, in order to impose policies that serve their interests, eliminating the smallest possibility for “uncontrolled destabilization."

The second is that, the regime achieved another bigger victory, breaking into even smaller pieces the middle class, as managed to turn Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) against Middle Education Teachers' Federation (OLME), since ADEDY rejected the proposal of OLME for a general civil servant strike on Friday May 17, the opening day of national exams, bringing conflict even between different categories of civil servants. The fact that ADEDY went to 24-hour general strike in response to the measure of conscription against teachers, just shows that each guild is strictly entrenched behind its own interests, making selective movements in the field of strikes and demonstrations, and civil servants see the extent of conscription measure as a threat against their future mobilizations.

Of course, the governmental regime exploited the fact that the head of ADEDY is Kostas Tsikrikas who served as secretary of teachers' PASK, a wing close to PASOK, the socialist party that ruled during most of the last nearly 35 years and inflated the number of trade union formations, thereby creating the conditions for splitting a solid united front of workers, a fact which the current neoliberal regime - in which PASOK participates despite its huge election losses – exploits successfully. The fact also that Tsikrikas is a teacher has a special symbolism, and gives even greater weight to government's victory against labor.

How to prevent riots without even one bleeding nose. This could be an indicative text title in a manual among the papers of a public relations bureaucrat in Brussels, who will provide valuable services to the European authorities, for a high salary and bonuses of course.

Conclusions from the Greek experiment, under such a text heading, could be summarized as follows: Place your own people in the leadership of some unions, then activate conflicting interests among groups of middle class, and finally, impose authoritarian crackdown measures on the occasion of these conflicting interests and therefore minimize the possibility of reaction from the multi-divited middle class and labor.

But while investigating the results of the experiment, the elites are working also towards the gradual disappearance of the power of political institutions and the imposition of a centralized economic power by a powerful central bank across Europe that will serve specific interests, while hiding behind technocratic procedures, numbers, economic targets and indexes, covering the real purpose, which is the establishment of a peculiar economic empire that will be managed by an unknown, unapproachable financial oligarchy.

Thanks for your article. For us, overseas readers, this situation should be an eye-opener.

Could you, however, give us further details about what civil conscription is? Something like a short post, that, upon finding your blog, people can see.

    Thanks

    1. Magpie, thanks for your response. It's nice to see that people care about what's going on here. Well, first of all, if you look at wikipedia, you will find a short definition about what is civil conscription (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_conscription).

It's impressive that, this term in wikipedia is added probably due to the fact that this measure is applied recently in Greece, a “democratic” country. I understand that because I read that “Civil conscription is used by various governments around the world, among them Greece” and from the references of the article.

As far as I know, the civil conscription measure is permitted only in extreme cases (war, natural disasters, etc), according to the Greek law. The Greek government is impossing this measure now without those circumstances just to break the labour front and prevent further general strikes against cruel austerity measures. Teachers in middle education in Greece have the responsibility to supervise students during national exams for their entrance to higher education. The government desided to pass a specific legislation against teachers just before the exams in order to impose the measure of civil conscription and show “who is the boss”. Teachers threatened with strike during the national exams and government found the opportunity to take the measure. During the process, “travel warrants”, similar to that given to soldiers and officers while they serve in the Greek army, were sent to teachers' addresses, these were documents which describe the exact time that the specific teacher should be at the specific school to supervise. Every teacher had to obey, otherwise would front even criminal charges.

Actually, this is not the first time that the government takes this measure (https://athens.indymedia.org/front.php3?lang=el&article_id=1452372)

As you understand this measure is anti-constitutional and opens the road to more authoritarian behaviour from governments not only in Greece.

      I hope this was useful.

    2. Yes, it was. Thank you for the explanation. I had never heard of it, to be honest.

I guess, we're plumbing ever new depths with the European crisis...

We asked DeepSeek if China will fully decouple from US dollar - Here is the answer we got in 19 secs

globinfo freexchange     The exact question was: Will China fully decouple from US dollar? The analysis we got in just 19 seconds is pretty impressive:   The question of whether China will "fully decouple" from the U.S. dollar is complex and hinges on geopolitical, economic, and strategic factors. While China has been actively diversifying its financial systems and reducing reliance on the dollar, a complete decoupling in the near term appears unlikely. Here's a balanced analysis: 1. Trends Toward Reduced Dollar Dependence De-dollarization Efforts : China has promoted the use of its currency, the  renminbi (RMB) , in international trade and finance. Initiatives like bilateral currency swaps (e.g., with Russia, Argentina, and others), the  Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) , and the digital yuan (e-CNY) aim to reduce dollar dependency. Commodity Trade : China increasingly settles energy and commodity trades (e.g., with Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Russia) ...

Zuckerberg changes camp in the capitalist civil war, joins the Musk-led oligarchy

globinfo freexchange   It was Mark Zuckerberg this time that decided to change camp in the capitalist civil war, in order to join the Musk-led oligarchy under the oncoming presidency of oligarchy's puppet.   The move by Meta to end its third-party fact-checking program and move to a so-called community notes model, has been justifiably widely interpreted as an attempt by Zuckerberg to ingratiate himself with the incoming Trump administration, which has long denounced the moderation policy as censorship with a left-wing bias.   From the first moments in his interview with Joe Rogan, Zuckerberg attempted to justify his previous policy regarding censorship practices in Facebook, claiming that he was receiving high pressure from the Democratic party to do so! The ex-liberal billionaire oligarch made an impressive 180 degrees turn, claiming that he knew that there was something wrong with the specific policy and that he tried to fight back against the pressure to imple...

Hamas Intends to Uphold Agreement, Senior Official Tells Drop Site in 30-Minute Interview

In an exclusive interview with Drop Site News , a senior Hamas official said that the group intends to uphold its side of the “ceasefire” deal—despite claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he received assurances from both President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump that Israel can resume its war against Gaza after the first phase of the agreement. “We are committed to this deal. We will exert the maximum efforts to give this deal a chance to succeed. We are looking for how to prevent the war again, how to protect our people. We will do the best to protect this deal,” said Dr. Basem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau. “What kind of side deals they have done, this is their business. But what I can say here: the American administration led by Biden, we consider complicit—directly complicit—in the genocide.”   [...]   Naim said that Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, as well as other resistance groups, are prepared to resume fighting if Is...

In France, Ordinary Consumers Fund Tax Breaks for the Wealthy

Emmanuel Macron’s government gave tax breaks for France’s wealthiest while counting on purchase taxes paid by ordinary consumers. Now saying it has a budget hole to fill, his administration is again expecting working-class people to pick up the bill.   by Marlon Ettinger Part 1 President Emmanuel Macron picked François Bayrou as France’s new prime minister earlier this month, despite his lack of any parliamentary majority. Bayrou’s appointment on December 13 came just over a week after his predecessor Michel Barnier’s government was felled by a no-confidence vote proposed by the Left and joined by the far right, after Barnier tried to force through his budget without having the numbers in the National Assembly.  The most likely outcome now is that Bayrou, who comes from a party called the Democratic Movement, will reimpose last year’s budget by decree. The National Assembly has already assented to continuing last year’s budget by an emergency vote. France’s in many ways undemo...

Global South States Resist Israeli Impunity Over War Crimes

During its genocidal campaign in Gaza, Israel has repeatedly flouted the rulings of international courts. While Western states indulge Israeli impunity, a coalition of states backed by left-wing parties is spearheading action to hold Israel to account.  by Harrison Stetler Part 1 Representatives of nine Global South countries convened in the Hague last Friday to launch a coalition that will apply collective pressure on Israel over its gross violations of international law. The founding members of the Hague Group include the governments of Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa. Their initiative aims to establish a common platform to enforce “coordinated legal and diplomatic measures,” including sanctions, in retaliation for the Israeli state’s fifteen-month-long invasion of Gaza, its decades-old occupation of the West Bank, and its blocking of the creation of a Palestinian state. “This is a group for collective action. Raffi Berg: BBC Middle East Editor Exposed as CIA, Mossad Collaborator

A senior BBC editor at the center of an ongoing scandal into the network’s systematic pro-Israel bias is, in fact, a former member of a CIA propaganda outfit, MintPress News can reveal. Raffi Berg, an Englishman who heads the BBC’s Middle East desk, formerly worked for the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service, a unit that, by his own admission, was a CIA front group. Berg is currently the subject of considerable scrutiny after thirteen BBC employees spoke out, claiming, among other things, that his “entire job is to water down everything that’s too critical of Israel” and that he holds “wild” amounts of power at the British state broadcaster, that there exists a culture of “extreme fear” at the BBC about publishing anything critical of Israel, and that Berg himself plays a key role in turning its coverage into “systematic Israeli propaganda.” The BBC has disputed these claims.   by Alan Macleod    Part 5 - A Worldwide Network   Whatever the v...
