Ο Καναδάς ρίχνει μαύρο στην κάλυψη των εξελίξεων για τη Βενεζουέλα

Η καναδική κυβέρνηση απαγορεύει σε διεθνή μέσα ενημέρωσης που ασχολούνται με την επικαιρότητα στη Λατινική Αμερική, όπως είναι το δίκτυο teleSUR, να καλύψουν τη συνάντηση του Lima Group που θα γίνει στην πρωτεύουσα του Καναδά, Οττάβα, και όπου αναμένεται να συζητηθούν οι εξελίξεις στη Βενεζουέλα.

Συγκεκριμένα, στη συνάντηση ο Καναδάς και οι σύμμαχοί του αναμένεται να συζητήσουν νέους τρόπους (μεταξύ των οποίων και οικονομικούς) υποστήριξης της αντιπολίτευσης στη Βενεζουέλα και άσκησης πιέσεων προς την κυβέρνηση Μαδούρο.

Το θέμα της άρνησης δημοσιογραφικής κάλυψης από επιλεγμένα λατινοαμερικάνικα μέσα ενημέρωσης ανέδειξε το δίκτυο teleSUR. Η καναδική κυβέρνηση δεν έδωσε καμία εξήγηση για την άρνηση, παρ’όλο που πρόσφατα έχει δεχθεί κριτική ότι περιορίζει την ελευθεροτυπία στο εσωτερικό της χώρας.

Το μήνυμα ανέφερε: «Ευχαριστούμε για το ενδιαφέρον σας για τη 10η υπουργική συνάντηση του Lima Group στην Οττάβα. Με αυτό το email σας ενημερώνουμε ότι δεν έγινε δεκτό το αίτημά σας για διαπίστευση του μέσου σας».

Μόλις λίγους μήνες πριν, το Νοέμβριο του 2018, το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο του Καναδά αποφάσισε ομόφωνα την ενοχή ενός δημοσιογράφου από το Vice Canada, του Ben Makuch, σχετικά με ρεπορτάζ για έναν πολίτη του Καναδά που έγινε μαχητής του ισλαμικού κράτους. Με βάση την απόφαση του δικαστηρίου, ο δημοσιογράφος ήταν υποχρεωμένος να παραδώσει όλα τα στοιχεία της έρευνάς του, γεγονός που «δημιουργεί ένα πολύ ανησυχητικό δικαστικό προηγούμενο και αποτελεί χτύπημα για την ελευθεροτυπία στον Καναδά», όπως σχολίασε η Alexandra Ellerbeck από την οργάνωση Committee to Protect Journalists.

Σε άλλη περίπτωση από το 2017, οι αστυνομικές δυνάμεις του Καναδά είχαν κατηγορηθεί ότι παρακολουθούσαν τουλάχιστον επτά δημοσιογράφους, έχοντας πρόσβαση σε δεδομένα των κινητών τους, σε μία προσπάθεια να εντοπίσουν έναν πληροφοριοδότη που δρούσε στο εσωτερικό της αστυνομίας.

Η τωρινή άρνηση του Καναδά να δώσει δημοσιογραφική πρόσβαση σε επιλεγμένα μέσα ενημέρωσης ακολουθεί τις συστηματικές επιθέσεις ενάντια σε κάθε δημοσιογραφία που δεν συμβαδίζει απόλυτα με την κυβερνητική γραμμή. Μάλιστα, η καναδική κυβέρνηση συχνά λειτουργεί σαν όργανο επιβολής των ΗΠΑ, καθώς πρόσφατα προχώρησε στη σύλληψη ενός Κινέζου αντιπροσώπου της εταιρείας Huawei, με βάση ένταλμα σύλληψης από την κυβέρνηση των ΗΠΑ.

Οι επιθέσεις σε μέσα ενημέρωσης της Λατινικής Αμερικής δεν είναι σπάνιες. Μέσα στο 2018 το Facebook είχε διαγράψει δύο φορές τη σελίδα του teleSUR.
