War Crimes At least 56 civilians have lost their lives in northern Syria due to air strikes by the US-led coalition purportedly targeting Daesh terrorists operating in the violence-wracked Middle Eastern country, says a UK-based monitoring group. Turkish prosecutors and police are conducting searches at Turkey’s Incirlik air base in connection with the failed coup, Turkish media reported. The base is used by both the Turkish and US air forces. The authorities entered the base in southern Turkey on Monday, state-run Anadolu news agency reported, adding that the investigation is connected with the coup attempt. Over the weekend, the airbase’s commander, General Bekir Ercan Van was detained at Incirlik by Turkish authorities along with over a dozen lower ranking officers. They all stand accused of complicity in the attempted coup. Congress released the last chapter of the congressional inquiry that has been kept under wraps for more than 13 years, stored in a secure room in the basement of the Capitol. Lawmakers and relatives of victims of the attacks, who believe that Saudi links to the attackers were not thoroughly investigated, campaigned for years to get the pages released. The lightly redacted document names individuals who helped the hijackers get apartments, open bank accounts and connect with local mosques. An opinion poll has revealed that the majority of British people are against holding a second referendum on UK’s membership of the European Union. The poll carried out by ComRes found that some 57 percent of the respondents opposed a second vote on Brexit, and only 29 percent believed that there should be another referendum. Nearly half of the interviewees, 46 percent, also thought that new British Prime Minister Theresa May should carry on without calling a general election. The respondents agree that “ the Conservatives were elected for a five-year term so Ms May does not need to face a general election to get support for her program. ” Some 38 percent, however, said that May needs to be elected in a general vote. The poll came less than a week after the House of Commons said it will debate a petition calling for a second referendum on September 5.
