Α forcible eviction in Spain of crisis

Repression, rage and stone throwing in neighborhoods

Police continues evictions. The new victim this time, a 54-year old man with total disability in Lavapies-Madrid. Antonio Argobia forced to abandon his home as he couldn't pay the rent due to his debts.

Police actions mobilized people of the neighborhood and representatives of social movements who gathered outside the building of Argobia's apartment. According to the recorded video, policemen drag the protesters who were protesting by sitting in the middle of the road, while later they were repeatedly beating them with their clubs. This was something that outraged others, who attacked against policemen with stones and other objects.

During the police operation, the mediator of the movement "Stop Avictions - Stop Desahucios" was arrested as well as two photojournalists from Associated Press and the owner of the apartment.

The Assembly of "Vivienda Centro del 15M", activist group that participates Argobia and invited the "STOP Desahucios" in order to delay eviction while trying to find a solution for his housing problem, denounced through a statement that the cost of the police operation together with the losses for traders affected by movings restrictions "would overlap the payment of rent until a solution was found for the accommodation of Antonio".

Data from the Bank of Spain that show an abrupt increase in evictions, were given to publicity. According to the data, 19.567 evictions took place for the first term of 2013, while for the whole year 2012 estimated at 23.774. Analysts suggest that these facts will show a dramatic increase in evictions when data will be collected for the whole 2013.

This increase occurred, despite the more favorable repayment terms from bank and, despite the law against evictions (essentially freeze of evictions for two years) passed by the People's Party in April.
