Μανιφέστο “Ύστατη έκκληση”

Αυτή είναι παραπάνω από μια οικονομική και καθεστωτική κρίση: είναι μια κρίση πολιτισμού

Οι Ευρωπαίοι πολίτες, στη μεγάλη τους πλειονότητα, πιστεύουν ότι η σημερινή καταναλωτική κοινωνία μπορεί «να βελτιωθεί» (και πρέπει να το κάνει) στο μέλλον. Ταυτόχρονα, σημαντικό μέρος των κατοίκων του πλανήτη ελπίζουν ότι θα προσεγγίσουν τα δικά μας επίπεδα υλικής ευημερίας. Ωστόσο, το επίπεδο παραγωγής και κατανάλωσης επιτεύχθηκε μέσα από τη κατασπατάληση των φυσικών και ενεργειακών πόρων, και τη διάρρηξη των οικολογικών ισορροπιών της Γης.

Τίποτα από όλα αυτά δεν είναι κάτι νέο. Οι πιο διορατικοί ερευνητές και οι επιστήμονες εκπέμπουν στοιχειοθετημένα σήματα κινδύνου από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1970 του εικοστού αιώνα: αν συνεχιστούν οι παρούσες αναπτυξιακές τάσεις (στην οικονομία, στη δημογραφία, στην εκμετάλλευση των φυσικών πόρων, στη παραγωγή ρύπων και στην αύξηση των ανισοτήτων) το πιο πιθανό αποτέλεσμα για τον εικοστό πρώτο αιώνα είναι η πολιτισμική κατάρρευση.

Σήμερα πληθαίνουν οι ειδήσεις που δείχνουν ότι ο δρόμος της ανάπτυξης οδηγεί ήδη σε μια γενοκτονία σε αργή κίνηση. Η μείωση της διαθέσιμης φτηνής ενέργειας, τα καταστροφικά σενάρια κλιματικής αλλαγής και οι γεωπολιτικές εντάσεις για τους φυσικούς πόρους δείχνουν ότι οι τάσεις προόδου του παρελθόντος γίνονται κομμάτια.

Μπροστά σε αυτή τη πρόκληση δεν αρκούν οι διακοσμητικοί εξορκισμοί της αειφόρου ανάπτυξης, ούτε το απλό στοίχημα των οικολογικών τεχνολογιών, ούτε η υποτιθέμενη «πράσινη οικονομία» που καλύπτει την γενικευμένη εμπορευματοποίηση των φυσικών αγαθών και των οικοσυστημικών υπηρεσιών. Οι τεχνολογικές λύσεις, τόσο στην περιβαλλοντική κρίση όσο και στην ενεργειακή παρακμή, είναι ανεπαρκείς. Και επιπλέον, η οικολογική κρίση δεν είναι ένα επιμέρους ζήτημα αλλά είναι καθοριστικής σημασίας για όλες τις πτυχές της κοινωνίας: διατροφή, μεταφορές, βιομηχανία, δόμηση, πολεμικές συγκρούσεις… Πρόκειται, σε τελική ανάλυση, για τη βάση της οικονομίας μας και της ζωής μας.

Έχουμε παγιδευτεί μέσα στην διεστραμμένη δυναμική ενός πολιτισμού που δεν λειτουργεί αν δεν αναπτύσσεται, και που όταν αναπτύσσεται καταστρέφει τις φυσικές βάσεις που τον κάνουν να υπάρχει. Η τεχνολατρική και αγορολατρική κουλτούρα μας ξεχνάει ότι από καταγωγής μας, εξαρτιόμαστε από τα οικοσυστήματα και είμαστε αλληλοεξαρτημένοι.

Ο πλανήτης δεν μπορεί να στηρίξει την παραγωγιστική και καταναλωτική κοινωνία. Έχουμε ανάγκη να δημιουργήσουμε ένα νέο πολιτισμό ικανό να εξασφαλίσει μια αξιοπρεπή ζωή σε ένα τεράστιο ανθρώπινο πληθυσμό (σήμερα, σε περισσότερους από 7,2 δισεκατομμύρια ανθρώπους), που συνεχίζει να αυξάνεται και κατοικεί σε ένα κόσμο με φθίνοντες πόρους. Να γιατί θα είναι απαραίτητο να γίνουν ριζικές αλλαγές στο τρόπο ζωής, στις μορφές της παραγωγής, στο σχεδιασμό των πόλεων και στη χωροταξική οργάνωση: και πάνω από όλα, στις αξίες που διέπουν όλα τα παραπάνω. Χρειαζόμαστε μια κοινωνία που θα έχει για στόχο να επαναφέρει την ισορροπία με τη βιόσφαιρα, και που χρησιμοποιεί την έρευνα, την τεχνολογία, τον πολιτισμό, την οικονομία και την πολιτική για να προχωρήσει προς αυτή τη κατεύθυνση. Για να το πετύχουμε, μας χρειάζεται να κατορθώσουμε να ξεδιπλώσουμε όλη τη πολιτική φαντασία, την ηθική γενναιοδωρία και την τεχνική δημιουργικότητά μας.

Όμως αυτός ο Μεγάλος Μετασχηματισμός αντιμετωπίζει δυο τιτάνια εμπόδια: την αδράνεια του καπιταλιστικού τρόπου ζωής και τα συμφέροντα των προνομιούχων ομάδων. Για να αποφύγουμε το χάος και τη βαρβαρότητα προς τις οποίες σήμερα κατευθυνόμαστε, έχουμε ανάγκη από μια βαθειά πολιτική ρήξη με την παρούσα ηγεμονία, και από μια οικονομία που έχει ως σκοπό την ικανοποίηση των κοινωνικών αναγκών μέσα στα όρια που επιβάλει η βιόσφαιρα, και όχι η αύξηση του ιδιωτικού κέρδους.

Ευτυχώς, όλο και πιο πολλοί άνθρωποι αντιδρούν στις απόπειρες των ελίτ να τους κάνουν να πληρώσουν τα σπασμένα. Σήμερα, στο Ισπανικό Κράτος, η αφύπνιση της αξιοπρέπειας και της δημοκρατίας που προκάλεσε το κίνημα 15Μ (των Αγανακτισμένων) από την Άνοιξη του 2011, κυοφορεί μια συντακτική διαδικασία που γεννάει δυνατότητες για άλλες μορφές κοινωνικής οργάνωσης.

Ωστόσο, είναι αποφασιστικής σημασίας να συνειδητοποιήσουν τα εναλλακτικά σχέδια τις συνέπειες που έχουν τα όρια της ανάπτυξης και να επεξεργαστούν πολύ πιο τολμηρές εναλλακτικές προτάσεις. Η καθεστωτική και η οικονομική κρίση θα μπορέσουν να ξεπεραστούν μόνο αν ξεπεραστεί ταυτόχρονα και η οικολογική κρίση. Με αυτή την έννοια, δεν αρκούν οι πολιτικές που γυρνάνε πίσω στις συνταγές του κεϋνσιανού καπιταλισμού. Αυτές οι πολιτικές μας οδήγησαν, στις δεκαετίες που ακολούθησαν το δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, σε ένα επεκτατικό κύκλο που μας έφερε στο κατώφλι των ορίων του πλανήτη. Ένας νέος επεκτατικός κύκλος είναι ανέφικτος: δεν υπάρχουν η υλική βάση, ούτε ο οικολογικός χώρος και οι φυσικοί πόροι που θα μπορούσαν να τον στηρίξουν.

Ο εικοστός πρώτος αιώνας είναι ο πιο αποφασιστικός αιώνας της ιστορίας της ανθρωπότητας. Θα αποτελέσει μια μεγάλη δοκιμασία για όλους τους πολιτισμούς και τις κοινωνίες, καθώς και για το ανθρώπινο είδος στο σύνολό του. Μια δοκιμασία στην οποία θα κριθεί η συνέχιση της παρουσίας μας πάνω στη Γη και η δυνατότητα να αποκαλούμε «ανθρώπινη» τη ζωή που θα είμαστε ικανοί να οργανώσουμε στη συνέχεια. Είμαστε αντιμέτωποι με την πρόκληση ενός μετασχηματισμού διαστάσεων ανάλογων με εκείνους των μεγάλων ιστορικών γεγονότων όπως η νεολιθική επανάσταση ή η βιομηχανική επανάσταση.

Προσοχή: το παράθυρο της ευκαιρίας κλείνει. Είναι βέβαιο ότι υπάρχουν στο κόσμο πολλά κινήματα αντίστασης υπέρ της περιβαλλοντικής δικαιοσύνης (η οργάνωση Global Witness κατέγραψε σχεδόν χίλιους περιβαλλοντολόγους που σκοτώθηκαν στα τελευταία δέκα χρόνια, ενώ αγωνίζονταν ενάντια σε εξορυκτικά και πετρελαϊκά σχέδια, ή υπερασπίζονταν τη γη και τα νερά τους). Έχουμε, όμως, το πολύ μία πενταετία για να οργανώσουμε μια πλατιά και σφαιρική συζήτηση για τα όρια της ανάπτυξης, και για να δημιουργήσουμε δημοκρατικά οικολογικές και ενεργειακές εναλλακτικές ικανές να είναι σοβαρές και βιώσιμες. Θα πρέπει να είμαστε ικανοί να συσπειρώσουμε μεγάλες πλειοψηφίες για μιαν αλλαγή οικονομικού, ενεργειακού, κοινωνικού και πολιτισμικού μοντέλου. Πέρα από το ότι πολεμάει τις αδικίες που οφείλονται στην άσκηση της εξουσίας και στη συσσώρευση του πλούτου, μιλάμε για ένα μοντέλο που αναγνωρίζει την πραγματικότητα, κάνει ειρήνη με τη φύση και κάνει δυνατή την ευζωία μέσα στα οικολογικά όρια της Γης.

Ένας πολιτισμός τελειώνει και πρέπει να οικοδομήσουμε έναν άλλο καινούργιο. Οι συνέπειες του να μην κάνουμε τίποτα — ή να κάνουμε πολύ λίγα — μας οδηγούν κατευθείαν στη κοινωνική, οικονομική και οικολογική κατάρρευση. Αλλά αν αρχίσουμε σήμερα, μπορούμε ακόμα να γίνουμε οι πρωταγωνιστές και πρωταγωνίστριες μιας αλληλέγγυας και δημοκρατικής κοινωνίας που θα συμβιώνει ειρηνικά με τον πλανήτη.

A response to misinformation on Nicaragua: it was a coup, not a ‘massacre’

There is so much misinformation in mainstream corporate media about recent events in Nicaragua that it is a pity that Mary Ellsberg’s article for Pulse has added to it with a seemingly leftish critique. Ellsberg claims that recent articles, including from this website, often “ paint a picture of the crisis in Nicaragua that is dangerously misleading. ” Unfortunately, her own article does just that. It looks at the situation entirely from the perspective of those opposing Daniel Ortega’s government while whitewashing their malevolent behavior and downplaying the levels of US support they have relied on. Her piece is an incomplete depiction of what is happening on the ground, ignoring many salient facts that have come to light and which have been outdated by recent events.
