Hunger Games: Από τα σταφύλια της οργής στο παιχνίδι της πείνας

Φοιτητικά κινήματα από την Ταϊλάνδη μέχρι το Λονδίνο αντιγράφουν τους ήρωες ταινιών του Χόλιγουντ, όπως το Hunger Games και το V for Vendetta. Θα ξεκινήσει η επόμενη επανάσταση σε κάποιο στούντιο της αμερικανικής βιομηχανίας του θεάματος;

«Για να δω τώρα ποιος άλλος θα διαμαρτυρηθεί», έλεγε γελώντας ο δικτάτορας-πρωθυπουργός της Ταϊλάνδης Πραγιούθ Τσανότσα ύστερα από το πογκρόμ που πραγματοποίησαν την περασμένη εβδομάδα οι αρχές ασφαλείας εναντίον φοιτητών. Το μόνο αδίκημα που είχαν διαπράξει τα «θρασίμια» της ταϊλανδέζικης χούντας ήταν ότι ύψωναν τα τρία δάχτυλα του δεξιού χεριού αντιγράφοντας τους ήρωες της ταινίας The Hunger Games.

Καθώς το «κίνημα των τριών δαχτύλων» άρχισε να εξαπλώνεται σε όλη τη χώρα, το καθεστώς ακύρωσε την προβολή της ταινίας, ενώ οι αρχές οδηγούσαν αρκετούς φοιτητές σε κρατητήρια της ασφάλειας για να υπογράψουν δηλώσεις πολιτικών φρονημάτων.

Τα δυτικά μέσα ενημέρωσης αντιμετώπισαν την είδηση με ισχυρές δόσεις οριενταλισμού και πινελιές από τα εγχειρίδια προπαγάνδας του Ψυχρού Πολέμου. Η νεολαία, είπαν, επαναστατεί απέναντι σε ένα αυταρχικό καθεστώς της Ασίας, εμπνεόμενη από τις αρχές της φιλελεύθερης δημοκρατίας όπως εκφράζεται από το Χόλιγουντ. Τέλος της ανάλυσης, τέλος και της Ιστορίας, όπως θα έλεγε και ο Φουκουγιάμα.

Και ίσως τα πράγματα να ήταν έτσι εάν στις 5 Νοεμβρίου φοιτητές και νεολαίοι δεν είχαν διαδηλώσει στους δρόμους του Λονδίνου, με τις μάσκες τού Γκάι Φοκς από την ταινία V for Vendetta. Αν και ο Φοκς ήταν αληθινό πρόσωπο και ως γνωστόν επιχείρησε να ανατινάξει το βρετανικό Κοινοβούλιο το 1605, στις πρόσφατες κινητοποιήσεις κυριαρχούσαν οι συμβολισμοί της ταινίας και όχι τα ιστορικά γεγονότα.

Φτάσαμε, λοιπόν, σε μια εποχή που οι ταινίες του Χόλιγουντ εμπνέουν αληθινές εξεγέρσεις; Είναι γεγονός ότι οι δύο συγκεκριμένες παραγωγές ξάφνιασαν ευχάριστα ακόμη και τους σφοδρότερους επικριτές της αμερικανικής βιομηχανίας του θεάματος. Η επαναστατική βία νομιμοποιείται και το δικαίωμα στην ένοπλη ανατροπή καθεστώτων (ακόμη και με την προσφυγή σε τρομοκρατικές ενέργειες) προβάλλεται στη μεγάλη οθόνη με φόντο, όχι πλέον κάποια χώρα του πρώην ανατολικού μπλοκ, αλλά το Λονδίνο (V for Vendetta) και κάποια περιοχή της βόρειας Αμερικής (Hunger Games).

Και όλα αυτά συμβαίνουν ενώ οι δυτικές κυβερνήσεις διολισθαίνουν σε αυταρχικές μεθόδους καταστολής των λαϊκών κινητοποιήσεων, που φτάνουν έως και στην άτυπη επιβολή στρατιωτικού νόμου (όπως συνέβη πρόσφατα στη Βοστόνη και στο Φέργκιουσον των ΗΠΑ).

Μήπως λοιπόν το Χόλιγουντ, αφουγκραζόμενο την αγανάκτηση ευρύτατων τμημάτων της κοινωνίας, βρέθηκε εκτός της κυρίαρχης πολιτικής «γραμμής», είτε γιατί έτσι θα κόψει περισσότερα εισιτήρια, είτε για να καταφέρει να εκτονώσει τα δυνάμει επαναστατικά χαρακτηριστικά της εποχής μας; Ας μη βιαστούμε να φτάσουμε σε ένα τόσο απλουστευτικό συμπέρασμα.

Η συζήτηση για το πολιτικό περιεχόμενο ταινιών, όπως το Hunger Games και το V for Vendetta, καταλήγει πάντα σε ένα σαφές ερώτημα, το οποίο ελάχιστοι δηλώνουν ότι μπορούν να απαντήσουν με ασφάλεια: Τελικά οι συγκεκριμένες ταινίες στρέφονται εναντίον του κυρίαρχου οικονομικού συστήματος ή καταγγέλλουν απλώς κάθε απολυταρχικό καθεστώς, αδιαφορώντας για τις παραγωγικές διαδικασίες που το έφεραν στην εξουσία; Πιο απλά, πρόκειται για ένα συγκαλυμμένο αντικαπιταλιστικό μήνυμα που αφορά και τις ΗΠΑ ή για μια φιλελεύθερη κραυγή, όπως αυτές με τις οποίες μας συνήθιζε ο αμερικανικός κινηματογράφος στα χρόνια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου;

Το Hunger Games, περιγράφοντας μια δυστοπική κοινωνία με τεράστιες οικονομικές ανισότητες, φαίνεται εκ πρώτης όψεως να ανήκει στην πρώτη κατηγορία. Ποιος κινεί όμως τα νήματα του αυταρχικού μηχανισμού; «Στην ταινία βλέπουμε ανθρώπους να δουλεύουν σε ορυχεία, αλλά δεν μαθαίνουμε σε ποιον ανήκουν αυτά», σημείωναν πριν από ένα χρόνο οι αναλυτές Κριστίν Σχόφελτ και Ντέιβιντ Γουόλς, και συνέχιζαν: «Πού είναι οι τραπεζίτες και οι κάτοχοι των μέσων παραγωγής σε αυτή την ταινία;».

Για την ακρίβεια, ο τρόπος με τον οποίο αντιμετωπίζει η ταινία το κοινωνικό και οικονομικό υπόβαθρο, θυμίζει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο παρουσίασε το CNN τις αντικαθεστωτικές διαδηλώσεις στην Ταϊλάνδη: οι δημοσιογράφοι εκθείαζαν την ηρωική στάση των φοιτητών, αλλά παρέλειψαν να σημειώσουν ότι ο δικτάτορας Πραγιούθ Τσανότσα κυβερνά με την ανοχή των ΗΠΑ και τις ευλογίες ενός σημαντικού τμήματος της οικονομικής ελίτ της χώρας. Ο ίδιος, μάλιστα, εφαρμόζει πολιτικές λιτότητας και ιδιωτικοποιήσεων οι οποίες εκπονούνται από ένα «συμβούλιο σοφών», που αποτελείται από χρηματιστές και στελέχη μεγάλων επιχειρήσεων.

Από την άλλη, μήπως τελικά ζητάμε πολλά από χολιγουντιανές παραγωγές, που αν μη τι άλλο έχουν το θάρρος να προτάξουν την επανάσταση σαν το μοναδικό μέσο ανατροπής του status quo; Ισως ναι. Πιθανότατα όμως όχι. Τις δεκαετίες του 1940 και του 1960, το Χόλιγουντ είχε παρουσιάσει πολύ πιο ριζοσπαστικές ταινίες, όπως τα Σταφύλια της Οργής, του Τζον Φορντ, ή ακόμη και ο Σπάρτακος, του Στάνλεϊ Κιούμπρικ.

Και στο κάτω κάτω, το δικαίωμα των κυριαρχούμενων να ανατρέπουν με τη βία τους κυρίαρχους τεκμηριώθηκε το 1689 από τον Τζον Λοκ – αν όχι το 1215 με την κυκλοφορία της Magna Carta. Αν εμείς αναζητούμε ακόμη ψήγματα αυτού του δικαιώματος κρυμμένα σε ταινίες του Χόλιγουντ, μάλλον έχουμε χάσει τρεις αιώνες ιστορικής εξέλιξης.
