Η Ισλανδία στέλνει 26 τραπεζίτες στη φυλακή

Πράγματα που δεν θα δείτε ποτέ στην Ευρωπαϊκή Χρηματοπιστωτική Δικτατορία που λέγεται ευρωζώνη, ή, στην τραπεζοκρατούμενη αυτοκρατορία που λέγεται ΗΠΑ

Σε δύο ξεχωριστές δίκες -στο Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο και στο Περιφερειακό Δικαστήριο του Ρέικιαβικ- πέντε κορυφαίοι τραπεζίτες από τις Landsbankinn και Kaupping - τις δύο μεγαλύτερες τράπεζες της χώρας - κρίθηκαν ένοχοι χειραγώγησης της αγοράς, υπεξαίρεσης και παραβίασης των υποχρεώσεων πίστης.

Οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς έχουν καταδικαστεί σε φυλάκιση δύο έως πέντε ετών.

Η μέγιστη ποινή για οικονομικά εγκλήματα στην Ισλανδία είναι έξι χρόνια, ωστόσο, το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο εξετάζει την πιθανότητα επέκτασης των ποινών πέραν των έξι ετών.

Μετά το κραχ του 2008, ενώ το Κογκρέσο έδινε στις αμερικανικές τράπεζες πακέτο διάσωσης $ 700 δις εις βάρος των φορολογουμένων, η Ισλανδία αποφάσισε να πάρει διαφορετική κατεύθυνση και να επιτρέψει στην κυβέρνησή να αναλάβει τον έλεγχο των τραπεζών για να ανασχέσει το χάος της κατάρρευσης.

Το 2001, η Ισλανδία απελευθέρωσε το χρηματοπιστωτικό τομέα, ακολουθώντας το παράδειγμα του Μπιλ Κλίντον.

Σε λιγότερο από μια δεκαετία, η Ισλανδία είχε βυθιστεί σε τόσο μεγάλο εξωτερικό χρέος ώστε ήταν αδύνατο να προχωρήσει σε αναχρηματοδότηση.

Σχεδόν οκτώ χρόνια αργότερα, η κυβέρνηση της Ισλανδίας εξακολουθεί να διώκει και να στέλνει στη φυλακή τους υπευθύνους για τη χειραγώγηση της αγοράς που ακρωτηρίασαν την οικονομία της χώρας.

Ακόμα και τώρα, η Ισλανδία εξακολουθεί να αποπληρώνει τα δάνειά στο ΔΝΤ και σε άλλες χώρες μόνο για να κρατήσει τη χώρα όρθια.

Όταν ο πρόεδρος της Ισλανδίας, Ολάφουρ Ράγκναρ Γκρίμσον ρωτήθηκε, πώς κατόρθωσε η χώρα να ανακάμψει από την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση, έδωσε την περίφημη απάντηση: «Είμαστε αρκετά σοφοί ώστε να μην ακολουθήσουμε τις παραδοσιακές επικρατούσες -«ορθόδοξες» -οικονομικές απόψεις της Δύσης τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια.

Κάναμε ελέγχους συναλλάγματος, αφήσαμε τις τράπεζες να αποτύχουν, στηρίξαμε τους φτωχούς και δεν υιοθετήσαμε πολιτικές λιτότητας, όπως κάνουν στην Ευρώπη».

Εν τω μεταξύ, στην Αμερική, κανένα στέλεχος τράπεζας δεν έχει χρεωθεί με κάποιο από τα εγκλήματα τα οποία σχετίζονται με το κραχ του 2008, τη στιγμή που οι αμερικανικές τράπεζες μετρούν πάνω από $ 160 δισεκατομμύρια ετήσια κέρδη, ενώ οι κανονιστικές ρυθμίσεις προκειμένου να αποφευχθεί μια νέα οικονομική καταστροφή, είναι από ελάχιστες έως καμία.
