Δεν μπορεί να είναι τυχαίο ότι ο Εμανουέλ Μακρόν έχει ίσια και κατάλευκα δόντια, έγραφαν πριν από ενάμιση χρόνο οι Φαϊνάνσιαλ Τάιμς, ενώ ταυτόχρονα συμβούλευαν τον Τζέρεμι Κόρμπιν να κάνει μια ελαφρά… λεύκανση.

Για τους αγγλοσάξονες συντάκτες της εφημερίδας, τα λαμπερά δόντια αποτελούσαν ένα σημάδι κύρους και ευμάρειας που κάθε ηγέτης και επιχειρηματίας πρέπει να διαθέτει.

Τι γίνεται όμως αν κάποιος κοιτάξει στα δόντια (κυριολεκτικά) τους ανθρώπους που ζουν στις μητροπόλεις του σύγχρονου καπιταλισμού; Πρόσφατες έρευνες στις ΗΠΑ απέδειξαν ότι τα χαλασμένα δόντια αποτελούν την βασικότερη μακροχρόνια ασθένεια στη χώρα, καθώς τουλάχιστον 100 εκατομμύρια πολίτες δεν έχουν πρόσβαση σε κανενός είδους ιδιωτικό ή δημόσιο πρόγραμμα οδοντιατρικής περίθαλψης. Η τραγική κατάσταση που βιώνουν εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι έφτασε να απασχολήσει και την πρόσφατη περιοδεία εμπειρογνωμόνων του ΟΗΕ για την ακραία φτώχεια στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.

Λίγα σημεία του ανθρώπινου σώματος μπορούν να παρουσιάσουν τόσο ξεκάθαρα τις τρομακτικές αντιθέσεις, που γιγαντώνονται χρόνο με το χρόνο στις ΗΠΑ, αλλά και την ολοκληρωτική πλέον άλωση των δημοσίων προγραμμάτων πρόνοιας από τον ιδιωτικό τομέα.

Στο πρόσφατο βιβλίο της με τίτλο «Δόντια», η αμερικανίδα δημοσιογράφος Μάρι Ότο καταφέρνει να «διαβάσει» στις οδοντοστοιχίες της εργατικής τάξης και των οικονομικών ελίτ την ιστορία του καπιταλισμού, όπως εξελίχθηκε στις ΗΠΑ τον τελευταίο αιώνα.

Στις δεκαετίες που ακολούθησαν τη ρωσική επανάσταση, εξηγεί η Ότο, συντηρητικοί πολιτικοί αλλά και ενώσεις οδοντιάτρων υποστήριζαν ότι η επέκταση των προγραμμάτων στοματικής υγιεινής σε ολόκληρο τον πληθυσμό θα ισοδυναμούσε με κυριαρχία του κομμουνισμού. Το 1951, μάλιστα, η Επιτροπή Αντιαμερικανικών Δραστηριοτήτων, του γερουσιαστή Μακάρθι, ανέκρινε και τον πρώτο οδοντίατρο – τον Μάξ Σόεν – o οποίος μεταξύ άλλων «επικίνδυνων δραστηριοτήτων», προσέφερε δωρεάν τις υπηρεσίες τους σε άπορους συμπολίτες του.

Η κατάσταση όμως αντί να βελτιωθεί επιδεινώθηκε τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες. Τα τελευταία χρόνια στις ΗΠΑ σχηματίζονται ουρές χιλιομέτρων από ανθρώπους που περιμένουν για ώρες ή ακόμη και για ημέρες κάθε φορά που κάποια οργάνωση προσφέρει δωρεάν οδοντιατρικό έλεγχο. Την ίδια στιγμή, τα αστραφτερά χαμόγελα, τα οποία θεωρούνται προνόμιο αλλά και σημείο ταξικής υπεροχής για μια ολοένα μικρότερη ομάδα του πληθυσμού, κοστίζουν αρκετές δεκάδες χιλιάδες δολάρια.
