Ο πολιτικός χωροχρόνος του Στήβεν Χόκινγκ

Η φωτογραφία του Στήβεν Χόκινγκ από τις αντιπολεμικές συγκεντρώσεις του 1968 στο Λονδίνο, μαζί με την Βανέσα Ρεντγκρέιβ και τον Ταρίκ Αλί κάνει το γύρο του διαδικτύου μετά την ανακοίνωση του θανάτου του μεγάλου επιστήμονα. (Για την ιστορία για αυτές τις πορείες έγραψαν οι Rolling Stones το τραγούδι Street Fighting Man προς τιμήν όσων συμμετείχαν και κυρίως του Ταρίκ Αλί).

Αυτό που κάποιοι δεν γνωρίζουν (και κάποιοι προτιμούν ηθελημένα να αποκρύπτουν) είναι ότι ο Στήβεν Χόκινγκ συνέχισε σε όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής του να καταδικάζει αυταρχικά καθεστώτα που σκοτώνουν αδιακρίτως αθώους ανθρώπους για να διαιωνίσουν την κυριαρχία τους.

Η σημαντικότερη παρέμβασή του τα τελευταία χρόνια ήταν η καταδίκη της πολιτικής απαρτχάιντ του Ισραήλ και η στήριξη που παρείχε στο κίνημα για τον καλλιτεχνικό, ακαδημαϊκό και εμπορικό αποκλεισμό του Ισραήλ. Ο ίδιος είχε ακυρώσει προγραμματισμένη συμμετοχή του σε επιστημονικά συνέδρια που διοργάνωναν ισραηλινοί φορείς.

Η στάση του αυτή είχε προκαλέσει οργισμένες και χυδαίες αντιδράσεις στα ισραηλινά μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης αλλά και από πολιτικούς και δημοσιογράφους του Ισραήλ.

Με συνεχή λογοπαίγνια και προκλητικά σχόλια για την κινητική δυσκολία που αντιμετώπιζε ο διάσημος επιστήμονας, εκατοντάδες Ισραηλινοί επιχειρούσαν να μειώσουν τη σημασία της απόφασής του.

«Αυτός ο άνθρωπος δεν μπορεί ούτε να σκουπίσει τον κ**** του» έγραφε ένας χρήστης του ιντερνετ ενώ ένας άλλος συμπλήρωνε ότι «ακόμη κατουράει σε σακούλα» – σχόλιο το οποίο συγκέντρωσε αμέσως δεκάδες Like στο Facebook. Σε άλλα forum Ισραηλινοί χρήστες σχολίαζαν ότι η ασθένειά του έχει εκφυλίσει και το μυαλό του.

Την ίδια περίοδο η ομάδα Ισραηλινών δικηγόρων Shurat HaDin καλούσε τον Χόκιν να αφαιρέσει τον επεξεργαστή της εταιρείας Intel, χάρη στον οποίο κατάφερνε να επικοινωνεί με τον κόσμο, υποστηρίζοντας ότι ο συγκεκριμένος επεξεργαστής κατασκευάστηκε από ομάδα Ισραηλινών.

O Χόκινγκ είχε επίσης χαρακτηρίσει την αμερικανική εισβολή στο Ιράκ «έγκλημα πολέμου», στήριζε κινητοποιήσεις για τον πυρηνικό αφοπλισμό αλλά και τα προγράμματα παροχής δωρεάν και καθολικής ιατροφαρμακευτικής περίθαλψης σε όλους τους ανθρώπους. Ο ίδιος μάλιστα ανέφερε ότι χωρίς το δημόσιο σύστημα υγείας της Βρετανίας θα είχε πεθάνει και καταδίκαζε κάθε προσπάθεια ιδιωτικοποίησης στο χώρο της υγείας.

Ο διάσημος επιστήμονας είχε στηρίξει ανοιχτά τον ηγέτη των Εργατικών στη Βρετανία Τζέρεμι Κόρμπιν και κατηγόρησε τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ότι με την πολιτική του για το περιβάλλον θα προκαλέσει ανεπανόρθωτη καταστροφή στον πλανήτη.

Με άλλα σχόλια του είχε ταχθεί κατά της ανεξαρτητοποίησης της Σκωτίας ενώ πίστευε ότι το Brexit θα έχει αρνητικές συνέπειες στην χρηματοδότηση επιστημονικών προγραμμάτων στη Βρετανία.
