Brazil: PT slams 'lawfare' against Lula, weighs legal actions

Moro, Thompson, Gebran and the delegates on duty at the Federal Police in Curitiba are all accomplices in the same violence against the rights of Lula," PT's Gleisi Hoffmann.

It's difficult to point out who acted in the most shameful way” said the president of the Workers' Party (PT), Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, regarding the weekend legal events that kept former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in prison despite a release order. “Why don't they immediately arrest the Brazilian people that want Lula free and Lula president?” Hoffmann rhetorically asked, adding that she is “sad that the country has to be ashamed of its judges.

Lula da Silva remains in prison after a decision by an appeal judge to immediately release him was blatantly rejected by unauthorized judges, starting what some have dubbed a lawfare.

Moro, Thompson, Gebran and the delegates on duty at the Federal Police in Curitiba are all accomplices in the same violence against the rights of Lula, against democracy and against the freedom of the people to vote for who best represents them in the October presidential elections,” said Hoffmann.

Appeal judge Rogerio Favreto of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region (TRF-4) based in Porto Alegre, ordered Lula's release on Sunday, answering to a habeas corpus request by three PT lawmakers. Despite being on Vacation in Portugal with his family, the order was rejected by Judge Serio Moro, who presided over a corruption case against former President Lula da Silva, arguing Favreto lacks the authority to release him.

The events turned into a “lawfare,” with Favreto reaffirming the release order and giving the police a one hour ultimatum and Judge Gebran Neto, in charge of Lula's case at the regional federal court, stepping in to keep him in jail.

At the end, Judge Thompson Flores, president of the TRF-4, ruled that the case must return to judge Gebran, keeping Lula in prison.

They're all accomplices in an act of disobedience to a judicial order, followed by an arbitrary decision of judge Gebran, without any legal or procedural basis,” said Gleisi in a statement.

The PT held a party meeting in San Pablo, where members decided to take legal actions against judge Sergio Moro and the trail court that rejected Lula's release order despite coming from a higher tribunal.

Paulo Teixeira, one of the lawmakers responsible for the habeas corpus in favor of Lula, accused Moro of “violating the constitution” by preventing Lula's release.

The request is based on the right of the pre-candidate to attend campaign acts and debates. Lula is the front-runner for the presidential elections in all opinion polls, with 33 percent of the vote intention according to a poll by Ibope, published in June. The runner-up, the 63-year-old retired army captain Jair Bolsonaro, sits at 15 percent.

The detained have same political rights as any other common citizen,” said the lawmaker Waldih Damous, who also took part in the habeas corpus request, adding that obstructing the release order coming from a higher legal stance could even lead to prison for Moro.

Lula's candidacy will be formalized in a campaign act on August 15, despite being held prisoner in the police headquarters at Curitiba.

The head of Lula's legal team, Cristiano Zanin Martins, and lawyer Geoffrey Robertson will include a report on Sunday's event in the complaints filed at the U.N. Human Rights Council.

According to journalist Marcelo Auler, people who got access to Lula's prison cell on Sunday said the former president was optimistic about the turn of the events. “It was like a pot of gold for PT's campaign,” he said.

Lula has been imprisoned since April 7 in Curitiba over alleged charges of corruption that investigators failed to provide evidence for.

"Kidnapped in Int'l Waters": Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Ship, Detains Greta Thunberg & Others

Democracy Now!   Eleven peace activists and one journalist on board the Gaza Freedom Flotilla ship, the "Madleen," were detained by Israeli soldiers as their ship carrying vital humanitarian aid for starving Palestinians approached Gaza.    The ship was intercepted by Israeli forces in the middle of the night in international waters. Its supplies were seized and communications jammed. The unarmed activists will likely be transported to Israeli detention or "immediately deported," says Ann Wright, a U.S. military veteran who has participated in four Freedom Flotilla journeys and now serves on the steering committee of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. She calls on citizens of countries around the world to push for the activists' release and an end to Israel's war on Gaza.

Netanyahu Is Getting His War Between The U.S. & Iran!

The Jimmy Dore Show   Little progress is being made in negotiations between the United States and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program, and that may be by design. The U.S. is demanding a complete dismantling of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program, which is a non-starter for the Iranians. Meanwhile, the U.S. appears to have reneged on a promise to get a ceasefire and humanitarian aid into Gaza in exchange for the release of the last American hostage, so Hamas — and by extension Iran — feel the U.S. cannot be trusted in negotiations. Jimmy Dore and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss how Israel appears to be orchestrating a U.S. attack on Iran that few Americans have any interest in.    Related: Trump makes key move to beat Biden in their race to start a war with Iran

UN report confirms: Israel is a terrorist state and its goal is to exterminate all Palestinians

Israeli attacks on educational, religious and cultural sites in the Occupied Palestinian Territory amount to war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination, UN Commission says.     globinfo freexchange Israel has obliterated Gaza’s education system and destroyed over half of all religious and cultural sites in the Gaza Strip, part of a widespread and relentless assault against the Palestinian people in which Israeli forces have committed war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, said in a new report [yesterday]. How Israel manufactured a looting crisis to cover up its Gaza famine

by Muhammad Shehada Part 4 - Gangs and scarcity are responsible for looting While Israel failed to show any evidence of Hamas stealing aid, the only documented organised systematic looting happening in Gaza right now is by Israeli-backed criminal gangs who enjoy full protection from the Israeli army, according to the Washington Post, Financial Times, Ha’aretz , and the UN. A UN memo said these gangs established a “military complex” in the heart of Rafah after Israel fully depopulated the city. Humanitarian officials say the looting often happens right in front of Israeli troops and tanks, less than 100m away, who take no action until the local police arrive, with Israeli troops then opening fire at them. Israel not only provides protection and backing to these criminal gangs but has created the perfect conditions for looting to thrive through scarcity and a collapsing state of law and order. Currently, a single bag of wheat flour sells for about 1,500 NIS ($425), which makes it profita...

They Will Starve You In A Killing Cage Too

by Nate Bear   Starvation is taking hold in Gaza. Twenty-nine people have starved to death in the last few days.  Death by starvation is horrific, the body feeding on itself, first consuming carbohydrates and fats, and then moving on to the protein parts of tissue. Once these are used up, vital organs and tissues start to fail as they aren’t being nourished by essential nutrients. The heart, lungs, muscles, ovaries, testes and brain physically shrink and shrivel. The kidneys start to fail. Eventually the body begins scavenging muscle, including the heart muscle. When this starts to happen, death is hours away, preceded by hallucinations, severe mental disturbances and convulsions. With less stored fat and higher metabolic needs, children die first. Starving parents hold their dying children, at this point nothing but skin and bone, in their arms. Adults can survive anywhere between twenty and forty days without food. Those already weak, chronically ill or immuno-compromised di...
