Malls: ο θάνατος του (μεγαλο)εμποράκου

Γιγαντιαία malls, που συνόδευσαν για μισό αιώνα τον αμερικανικό καταναλωτισμό, οδηγούνται σε αργό και επώδυνο θάνατο, όπως και η μεσαία τάξη των ΗΠΑ. Μαζί τους εξαφανίζονται όμως και αρκετές από τις αυταπάτες και τους αστικούς μύθους που τα περιέβαλλαν.

Σε μία από τις θρυλικές σκηνές της ταινίας «The Blues Brothers» (ατυχώς μεταφρασμένη στα ελληνικά σαν «Οι ατσίδες με τα μπλε») διεξάγεται μια καταδίωξη με αυτοκίνητα μέσα σε ένα mall. Γυρισμένη το 1980 η ταινία αποτυπώνει το αποκορύφωμα της δόξας του βορειοαμερικανικού εμπορικού κέντρου, μέσα στο οποίο μπορούσαν να συμβούν τα πάντα.

Το Dixie Square Mall, βέβαια, όπου έγιναν τα γυρίσματα της ταινίας, κατεδαφίστηκε το 2012 αφού παρέμεινε εγκαταλελειμμένο για τρεις δεκαετίες, στη διάρκεια των οποίων είχε μετατραπεί σε μια τσιμεντένια ζούγκλα που σημειώνονταν βιασμοί και δολοφονίες ενώ έβρισκαν καταφύγιο άστεγοι και τοξικοεξαρτημένοι.

Σήμερα δεκάδες malls χάσκουν εγκαταλελειμμένα σαν νεκροταφεία ενός μικροαστικού καταναλωτισμού σε προχωρημένη φάση αποσύνθεσης. Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις οι ιδιοκτήτες των malls νοικιάζουν τα καταστήματα σε εξευτελιστικές τιμές σε μικρά λογιστικά γραφεία και ιατρεία, αν και πολύ συχνότερα οι εγκαταστάσεις μετατρέπονται σε μεγάλες αποθήκες.

Σε μια περίπτωση, μάλιστα, στη Φλόριντα ένα mall μετατράπηκε σε γιγαντιαία εκκλησία, καθώς κρίθηκε ότι έτσι θα συγκέντρωνε περισσότερους «πελάτες» -έστω και μόνο τις Κυριακές.

Με εξαίρεση τα υπερπολυτελή malls, που απευθύνονται σε ένα ελάχιστο τμήμα του πληθυσμού, τα κλασικά εμπορικά κέντρα που ξεφύτρωναν σαν μανιτάρια στα προάστια των μεγάλων αστικών κέντρων, εξαφανίζονται μαζί με τη μεσαία τάξη των ΗΠΑ, με τον φρικιαστικό επιθανάτιο ρόγχο της. Από το 2006 δεν έχει κατασκευαστεί ούτε ένα νέο εμπορικό κέντρο σε ολόκληρη την αμερικανική επικράτεια.

Ο θάνατος των malls σηματοδοτεί το οριστικό τέλος μια σημαντικής φάσης του μεταπολεμικού καπιταλισμού στις ΗΠΑ, ο οποίος χαρακτηρίστηκε από τη μαζική χρήση του Ι.Χ. αυτοκινήτου, αλλά και την ανάπτυξη μιας τεράστιας φούσκας στο real estate. Θα πρέπει να σημειωθεί ότι τα εμπορικά κέντρα δεν έφυγαν από το κέντρο της πόλης μόνο για να ακολουθήσουν τους baby boomers, που μετακινούνταν στα προάστια, αλλά γιατί οι κατασκευαστικές εταιρείες αναζητούσαν φτηνές εκτάσεις γης όπου θα μπορούσαν να κερδοσκοπήσουν εκμεταλλευόμενες και το ειδικό φορολογικό καθεστώς που απολάμβαναν.

Σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις το αν οι πελάτες θα μπορούσαν να φτάσουν στο mall ήταν δευτερεύουσας σημασίας για τους κατασκευαστές που εξασφάλιζαν κέρδη δεκάδων εκατομμυρίων από την κατασκευή και μεταπώληση.

Παρ’ όλα αυτά τα malls κατάφεραν να γίνουν συστατικό κομμάτι του αμερικανικού τρόπου ζωής. Στις απλουστευτικές αναλύσεις τους δεκάδες Αμερικανοί δημοσιογράφοι και δημοσιολόγοι έφτασαν να υποστηρίξουν ότι τα malls αποτελούν συνέχεια της αρχαίας αθηναϊκής αγοράς –επιχειρώντας έτσι να συνδέσουν τον καπιταλισμό με τη Δημοκρατία.

Κανένας τους, βέβαια, δεν φαίνεται να είχε διαβάσει τον Αριστοτέλη που έλεγε ότι «η Αγορά (των πολιτικών και θρησκευτικών δραστηριοτήτων) πρέπει να είναι καθαρή και ελεύθερη από κάθε είδους εμπορεύματα. […] Η αγορά των εμπορευμάτων πρέπει να είναι διαφορετική και χωριστή από αυτήν και να έχει τον κατάλληλο χώρο». Την πρώτη αγορά, συνέχιζε ο Ελληνας φιλόσοφος, «την προορίζουμε για τον ελεύθερο χρόνο και τη δεύτερη για τις ανάγκες της ζωής».

Στην πραγματικότητα τα αμερικανικά malls αποτελούν συνέχεια των «εμπορικών κέντρων» που γεννήθηκαν πριν από αιώνες στην Ασία και τη Βόρεια Αφρική. Στην αγορά του Ισφαχάν στην Περσία, το Καπαλί Τσαρσί (Κλειστή Αγορά) της Κωνσταντινούπολης και τα εκατοντάδες σουκ του αραβικού κόσμου οι έμποροι του αραβικού και ισλαμικού κόσμου δημιούργησαν, για πρώτη φορά, χώρους ανταλλαγής εμπορευμάτων στους οποίους προσέφεραν στοιχειωδώς ελεγχόμενες συνθήκες φωτισμού και θερμοκρασίας, επιτρέποντας στους εμπόρους να συναντούν τους πελάτες τους ανεξαρτήτως ώρας και καιρικών συνθηκών.

Στα malls της Δύσης και κυρίως στις ΗΠΑ οι «ιδανικές συνθήκες» δημιούργησαν νέα είδη καταναλωτικής «πανίδας», όπως τα mall rats (ποντίκια των malls), δηλαδή ομάδες εφήβων που περνούν εκεί το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ημέρας τους. Αργότερα εμφανίστηκαν και οι mall walkers, δηλαδή άνθρωποι που γυμνάζονται περπατώντας ή τρέχοντας στους διαδρόμους και τις σκάλες των πολυκαταστημάτων.

Σήμερα αρκετοί αναλυτές επιχειρούν να αποδώσουν την παρακμή των malls στην ανάπτυξη των αγορών μέσω ίντερνετ, οι οποίες έφτασαν ήδη να καλύπτουν το 9% του λιανικού εμπορίου στις ΗΠΑ. Για άλλη μια φορά η αλλαγή αποδίδεται σχεδόν αποκλειστικά στην τεχνολογία –με τον ίδιο περίπου τρόπο που η γέννηση των malls αποδόθηκε στην ευρεία χρήση του Ι.Χ. αυτοκινήτου.

Η τεχνολογία παίζει σίγουρα τον ρόλο της. Δεν ήταν όμως αυτή που δημιούργησε την εκρηκτική μεταπολεμική ανάπτυξη (στις στάχτες του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου). Και σίγουρα δεν μπορούμε να τη χρησιμοποιήσουμε για να κρύψουμε πίσω της το αδιέξοδο στο οποίο οδηγείται το κυρίαρχο οικονομικό σύστημα.

Τα malls στις ΗΠΑ πεθαίνουν γιατί κάποιος «σκότωσε» τους πελάτες τους, τη μεσαία τάξη.
