Protests in California, Seattle, Washington, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, Las Vegas and elsewhere against police brutality

“Demonstrations continued across the US for a fourth straight day to denounce brutal police tactics amid a spate of killings of unarmed black men by white police officers who were not charged with murder.”

“Thousands of people from California to New York and elsewhere held rallies Saturday night to protest a grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner in July as well as similar killings in recent months.”

“Unlike the fatal shooting of Brown, the chokehold death of Garner, a father of six and grandfather of two, was recorded on a cell phone and viewed by millions, contributing to the public outrage. In the video, Garner repeatedly told police officers 'I can't breathe! I can't breathe!'”

“In Berkeley, California, fierce clashes erupted between police and demonstrators when police used tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse them. Protesters threw rocks and other objects in retaliation.”

“In Seattle, Washington, several hundred protesters marched downtown to police headquarters. Seven people were arrested after throwing rocks at police and trying to block traffic.”

“Elsewhere at New York City’s Grand Central Station, protesters staged 'die-ins' lying on the ground of the busy travel terminal and chanting 'Eric Garner, Michael Brown. Shut it down, shut it down.'”

“Protests have also been held in Washington DC, Chicago, Miami, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and several other cities.”

“The US has recently witnessed a series of images of police brutality, where unarmed black men have died after encounters with white police. Tamir Rice, a black 12-year-old in Cleveland, Ohio was shot dead on November 22 after a police officer mistook his toy gun for a real one.”

“Akai Gurley, 28, an unarmed black man and father of a two-year-old daughter, was shot dead when a police officer opened fire while he was walking inside a Brooklyn apartment building on November 20.”

A response to misinformation on Nicaragua: it was a coup, not a ‘massacre’

There is so much misinformation in mainstream corporate media about recent events in Nicaragua that it is a pity that Mary Ellsberg’s article for Pulse has added to it with a seemingly leftish critique. Ellsberg claims that recent articles, including from this website, often “ paint a picture of the crisis in Nicaragua that is dangerously misleading. ” Unfortunately, her own article does just that. It looks at the situation entirely from the perspective of those opposing Daniel Ortega’s government while whitewashing their malevolent behavior and downplaying the levels of US support they have relied on. Her piece is an incomplete depiction of what is happening on the ground, ignoring many salient facts that have come to light and which have been outdated by recent events.
