Θάτσερ: Η χειρότερη πρωθυπουργός της Βρετανίας εδώ και 100 χρόνια

Η Μάγκυ τα κατάφερε, πήρε και μια πρωτιά μετά θάνατον. Στη λίστα ήταν 19 πρωθυπουργοί της Βρετανίας των τελευταίων 100 χρόνων, δηλαδή, από το 1916.

Και η Μάργκαρετ Θάτσερ πήρε την πρώτη θέση: Ανακηρύχθηκε από την Ένωση Ιστορικών της Βρετανίας ως η χειρότερη πρωθυπουργός του αιώνα.

Στη δεύτερη θέση -και δη, με μικρή διαφορά- φιγουράρει ο Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον, ενώ τέταρτος είναι ο Τόνι Μπλερ.

Η Σιδηρά Κυρία έλαβε το 24% των ψήφων.

Ο Κάμερον πήρε με 22%, ο Νέβιλ Τσάμπερλεϊν ήρθε τρίτος με 17% και τέταρτος ο Τόνι Μπλερ με 11%, με τον Γκόρντον Μπράουν να τον ακολουθεί στην επόμενη θέση.

Βασικό κριτήριο των ιστορικών ήταν η θέση της Θάτσερ απέναντι στην κοινωνία.

«Κατέστρεψε πάρα πολλά καλά στοιχεία στην κοινωνία και δημιούργησε πολλά άσχημα. Άφησε ένα κοινωνικό και ηθικό κενό στο οποίο οι πλούσιοι και οι πεζά τυχεροί μπορούσαν να καταστρέψουν ακόμη περισσότερα από εκείνα που δεν χρειάζονται και δεν έβλεπαν ότι τα έχουν ανάγκη όλοι οι άλλοι» δήλωσε η ιστορικός Έμμα Ντάργουιν για την απόφαση της Ένωσης.

Όσο για τον δεύτερο τη τάξει, Ντέιβιντ Κάμερον, τα σχόλια που ακούστηκαν ήταν μεταξύ άλλων και τα εξής: «Ένας από τους πιο επικίνδυνους πρωθυπουργούς που είχαμε ποτέ, όχι επειδή δεν είναι αξιοπρεπής άνθρωπος, είναι αξιοπρεπής, αλλά επειδή έπαιρνε ανάλαφρα τεράστιες, εξαιρετικής σημασίας αποφάσεις για τη Βρετανία». Επίσης: «… Είναι μια μετριότητα που από μόνη της δημιούργησε τη μεγαλύτερη κρίση των τελευταίων 75 ετών στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο».

Την τιμητική του είχε και ο Τόνι Μπλερ, αν και κατατάχθηκε πιο χαμηλά. Η ιστορικός Σάλι Ζίγκμοντ δήλωσε: «Τον συμπαθούσα μέχρι που μας είπε ψέμματα για φανταστικά όπλα μαζικής καταστροφής που είχε ο Σαντάμ και ήταν έτοιμα να πλήξουν τη δύση. Είμαι κατά του πολέμου, αλλά η ρητορική του Μπλερ μας κορόιδεψε και σκότωσε χιλιάδες αθώους ανθρώπους. Τώρα δεν πιστεύω στους πολιτικούς, αριστερούς ή δεξιούς».

14,000 babies could die if aid doesn’t enter Gaza in 48 hours, UN warns

Some 14,000 babies could die in Gaza in 48 hours if aid does not reach them in time, the UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, told the BBC today. Though Israel said it would allow “basic aid” into Gaza, only five trucks entered the enclave yesterday, two carrying shrouds to help bury Palestinians killed in Israel’s bombs. Others were in Gaza, but were being held by occupation forces and had not reached Palestinians. This was the first delivery of aid since 2 March, when Israel completely sealed the enclave. Twenty-nine people have starved to death in the last few days.  Death by starvation is horrific, the body feeding on itself, first consuming carbohydrates and fats, and then moving on to the protein parts of tissue.
