Drones: Advanced "big brother" arrives in Greece

The plan of the Greek police to buy UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), known as Drones, is in its final stage

According to some information, the Greek Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection is already negotiating with Israeli companies that specialize in the construction of unmanned aircrafts. The Drones are able to fly without noise, transferring sound, images and other data to the operations center. Due to their abilities, they cannot be detected either in operations close to the borders, or, in the center of Athens.

It is characteristic, that the idea for using Drones came when thousands of the "indignants" movement were protesting at Syntagma square, Athens. During that period, Autumn of 2011, some Greek officers met with executives of an Israeli company to discuss purchasing the unmanned aircraft. This is a good indication of how the police is planning to use them.

On June 27th, 2013, an unmanned military aircraft, which participated in the investigations for the detection of Albanian fugitives, was crashed, but the Greek police tried to deny the connection of the aircraft with this operation. However, according to information leaked to the press at that time, concerning the capabilities of military Drones, they have flight range of 15-30 km and capability to carry devices for inspecting spaces, detecting mobile phone signal, intercepting, etc.

While the UAVs were originally intended for border surveillance, it seems that they will be used in protests, as these are increasingly criminalized in Greece, like in Spain, as a consequence of an effort by the government to pass all requested by the Troika measures.

Meanwhile, Panos Skourletis, MP with the Leftist party SYRIZA that won euro elections, stated that phone communications with the party leader, Alexis Tsipras, or other SYRIZA executives and journalists, were frequently interrupted, indicating interceptions during the conversations. Government representative, MP with Nea Dimokratia, Sophia Voultepsi, rushed to attack SYRIZA for these statements, denying government's interference, while Skourletis didn't specify who is suspect for conducting interceptions in his initial statement!
