Greece heading for national elections?

Neoliberal government weaker than ever tries to impose predetermined conditions

by system failure

Recent euro elections gave a clear historical win for the Left in Greece. The main Leftist party SYRIZA have won by a difference nearly 4 pc and this was an alarming fact for many inside and outside Greece.

The neoliberal government will try to avoid possible national elections soon, but this would not be very easy since the term of the Greek presidency ends in February 2015 and any person suggested for the presidency will require at least 180 votes from the parliament. It is almost certain that SYRIZA will try to block the suggested person by the neoliberal government, which is weaker than ever with minimum support in the parliament, and therefore, very difficult to collect the required number of votes.

The next possible steps by Samaras administration will be to change the electoral law and impose predetermined conditions for a possible future Leftist government. Under current electoral law, the first party in Greece takes a bonus of 50 seats in the parliament in case that wins a plurality of votes. Samaras' partner and leader of PASOK Socialist party, Evangelos Venizelos, has already claimed that the electoral law should be changed after the recent euro elections results. It seems that the neoliberals inside and outside Greece are doing everything to prevent a Leftist government to come to power.

The mainstream media in Greece have already fixed the image of the neo-nazi party Golden Dawn, especially with the help of the Baltakos scandal (http://www.enetenglish.gr/?i=news.en.politics&id=1839) in order to be ready to join New Democracy for a possible coalition if necessary.

On the other hand, the political situation is very unstable in Greece and no one can truly predict the result of possible national elections. Therefore, Samaras administration will try to impose preferable people in key positions in order to limit the ability of a Leftist government to make its own moves. According to some information, Samaras will ignore SYRIZA's request for a discussion on the person who will replace George Provopoulos, current governor of the Bank of Greece. The government is preparing current Minister of Finance, Yannis Stournaras for this position. Stournaras is the "favorite boy" of Troika and Berlin and one of the most dedicated to neoliberal destructive policies.

According to other information, Troika lenders will go further since they are planning to force SYRIZA to officially accept their conditions for treating Greece's debt problem, in order to play by their rules and secure big banks' interests, even in case that SYRIZA will come to power.

Samaras will probably risk to allow national elections quite soon, probably just after the summer period, in order to maintain its current power, holding back the new measures. In case that his party, Nea Dimokratia, will manage to form a new coalition government with Golden Dawn and other neoliberal forces like PASOK and 'River' political party (http://adiritos.blogspot.gr/2014/05/a-banking-media-establishment-creation.html), he will gain precious time to impose the new measures and complete the Greek experiment successfully. A broad win for the Left in possible national elections, is probably the only hope against this nightmare scenario according to which the experiment will be expanded throughout Europe, although the war against such a government in Greece, will be pitiless.
