Τζιλ Στάιν: Οι ΗΠΑ έχουν και… αριστερή υποψήφια πρόεδρο

Μα ποια είναι επιτέλους αυτή η Τζιλ Στάιν;

Τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες το όνομά της ακούγεται συνέχεια ακόμη και στα συστημικά αμερικανικά media που μέχρι τώρα δεν είχαν βήμα για εκείνη.

Ο λόγος είναι ότι μέσα σε ένα πολύ μικρό χρονικό διάστημα αναδείχτηκε σε σοβαρή απειλή για την Χίλαρι Κλίντον υπό το σύνθημα, «Τζιλ, όχι Χιλ».

Η Τζιλ Στάιν είναι η υποψήφια του Πράσινου Κόμματος των ΗΠΑ για το οβάλ γραφείο. Και δεν απειλεί τη Χίλαρι Κλίντον επειδή υπάρχει πιθανότητα να εκλεγεί πρόεδρος αλλά επειδή οι ψηφοφόροι του Μπέρνι Σάντερς δείχνουν να στρέφονται σε εκείνη, μετά την ήττα του στις εσωκομματικές εκλογές των Δημοκρατικών.

Η Τζιλ Στάιν είναι ρωσο-εβραϊκής καταγωγής, γιατρός, οικολόγος και πολύ ενεργή ακτιβίστρια. Μάλιστα προέρχεται από τους κόλπους των Δημοκρατικών τους οποίους εγκατέλειψε το 1998 όταν το Κονγκρέσο - με πλειοψηφία τότε τους Δημοκρατικούς - κατήργησε το νόμο για τη διαφάνεια στη χρηματοδότηση των προεκλογικών εκστρατειών.

Τα ποσοστά της αυτή τη στιγμή είναι πολύ μικρά και θα πρέπει να τα αυξήσει για να μπορέσει να συμμετάσχει στα προεκλογικά ντιμπέιτ με τους Χίλαρι και Τραμπ. Ωστόσο, μετά την επίσημη στήριξη του Μπέρνι Σάντερς στην Κλίντον, η Στάιν είδε ξαφνικά τις μετοχές της να αυξάνονται.

Μέσα σε μικρό χρονικό διάστημα οι δωρεές προς το Πράσινο Κόμμα αυξήθηκαν, το ίδιο και η δημοτικότητα της Στάιν που απέκτησε δεκάδες χιλιάδες νέους ακολούθους σε facebook και twitter. Κι αυτό γιατί για πολλούς από τους υποστηρικτές του Μπέρνι Σάντερς η Χίλαρι Κλίντον δεν αποτελεί την εναλλακτική επιλογή που εκείνος πρέσβευε. Αυτοί εξάλλου δημιούργησαν και το hashtag #jillnothill.

Η Στάιν τώρα παρουσιάζεται ως η εναλλακτική υποψήφια στη θέση του Μπέρνι Σάντερς δηλώνοντας ότι «είναι το plan Β» για τους υποστηρικτές του. «Ως η μόνη υποψήφια που δεν είμαι δηλητηριασμένη από εταιρικά κεφάλαια και λομπίστες, μπορώ πραγματικά να παλέψω γι’ αυτά που χρειαζόμαστε» είπε σε πρόσφατη συνέντευξή της. Εξάλλου η Στάιν είχε καλέσει τον Μπέρνι Σάντερς - ο οποίος στο μεταξύ αποχώρησε από τους Δημοκρατικούς - σε συνεργασία για την «πολιτική επανάσταση» και την «αληθινή Δημοκρατία».

Η Τζιλ Στάιν υπόσχεται δωρεάν τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση, υγειονομική περίθαλψη για όλους και επιθετική πολιτική για την αντιμετώπιση της κλιματικής αλλαγής. Προτείνει επίσης ένα New Deal για ένα επείγον πρόγραμμα εργασίας ώστε να λυθεί το πρόβλημα της ανεργίας. Υπόσχεται να ακυρώσει τα φοιτητικά χρέη και υποστηρίζει ότι αυτό θα γίνει μέσω ποσοτικής χαλάρωσης και αγορά των χρεών από την Ομοσπονδιακή Τράπεζα.

Επίσης υπόσχεται να αναστείλει τη συμμετοχή των ΗΠΑ στους πολέμους που «χρεοκοπούν τη χώρα» και να επικεντρωθεί στην εσωτερική ασφάλεια. Προτείνει φυσικά την περικοπή των στρατιωτικών δαπανών που αυτή τη στιγμή φτάνει το 50% του προϋπολογισμού των ΗΠΑ.

Η Στάιν πρέπει τώρα να κάνει αγώνα για να εκτινάξει τα ποσοστά της από το 4% περίπου στο 15% κάτι που θα της επιτρέψει να κοντράρει τη Χίλαρι Κλίντον στα ντιμπέιτ. Προς το παρόν το κάνει στα media, εγκαλώντας την υποψήφια των Δημοκρατικών, μεταξύ άλλων, για το θέμα της διαρροής των email της. Μάλιστα σε ένα πρόσφατο περιστατικό, δημοσιογράφος του CNN την διέκοψε στον αέρα όταν εκείνη αμφισβήτησε την ικανότητα της Κλίντον να γίνει πρόεδρος.

Από την πλευρά των Δημοκρατικών γίνεται μεγάλη καμπάνια εναντίον της στη λογική ότι ενδεχόμενη ψήφος στην Στάιν, είναι χαμένη ψήφος για την Κλίντον κάτι που καταλήγει προς όφελος του Τραμπ. Η ίδια η Στάιν και οι υποστηρικτές της πάντως απορρίπτουν αυτή την ιδέα, λέγοντας ότι δεν θα τους οδηγήσει ο φόβος σε μια ψήφο ενάντια στα όσα πιστεύουν.

Όσο για τους υποστηρικτές του Σάντερς; Αρκετοί δηλώνουν απογοητευμένοι από το γεγονός ότι το Δημοκρατικό Κόμμα δεν δείχνει να τους λαμβάνει σοβαρά υπ’ όψιν κι έτσι τονίζουν ότι είναι αποφασισμένοι να ψηφίσουν την Στάιν καθώς είναι η μόνη… εναλλακτική.

14,000 babies could die if aid doesn’t enter Gaza in 48 hours, UN warns

Some 14,000 babies could die in Gaza in 48 hours if aid does not reach them in time, the UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, told the BBC today. Though Israel said it would allow “basic aid” into Gaza, only five trucks entered the enclave yesterday, two carrying shrouds to help bury Palestinians killed in Israel’s bombs.
