Volkswagen: το κατσαριδάκι του γερμανικού καπιταλισμού

Από το Βερολίνο του Χίτλερ μέχρι την καγκελαρία της Μέρκελ και από την Αμερική του Ρούζβελτ μέχρι τον Λευκό Οίκο του Ομπάμα, οι αυτοκινητοβιομηχανίες των αναπτυγμένων κρατών γίνονταν καθρέφτης των εξελίξεων στην παγκόσμια οικονομία. Το σκάνδαλο της Volkswagen ήρθε απλώς να καταρρίψει μερικούς από τους μύθους για το σύγχρονο πρόσωπο του καπιταλισμού.

Στριμωγμένος σε ένα σχετικά μικρό γραφείο σχεδίαζε και ξανασχεδίαζε ένα μικρό αυτοκινητάκι.

Μπορεί κανένας να μην αναγνώριζε το καλλιτεχνικό του ταλέντο (κάτι που η ανθρωπότητα το μετάνιωσε αρκετές φορές έκτοτε), τα χρόνια όμως που είχε περάσει σαν ζωγράφος τον βοηθούσαν στις λεπτομέρειες.

Ο Αδόλφος Χίτλερ είχε πολύ καλά στο μυαλό του πώς θα ήθελε το αυτοκίνητο του λαού (Volkswagen) που σχεδίαζε: η γερμανική οικογένεια θα έμενε αδιαίρετη με τους δυο γονείς στα μπροστινά καθίσματα και δυο ή τρία παιδιά στο πίσω, να κινούνται με 100 χλμ/ώρα στους νέους αυτοκινητόδρομους.

Καθώς οι Γερμανοί εργάτες δεν διέθεταν γκαράζ και το αυτοκίνητο θα έμενε συνεχώς στο ύπαιθρο απαιτούνταν ένας αερόψυκτος κινητήρας προκειμένου να μην παγώνει το νερό στο ψυγείο τις κρύες νύχτες του γερμανικού χειμώνα.

Και όλα αυτά έπρεπε να επιτευχθούν σε ένα όχημα που θα κόστιζε λιγότερο από χίλια μάρκα, θα κατανάλωνε λιγότερο από εφτά λίτρα βενζίνης ανά 100 χιλιόμετρα και θα είχε εύκολη και φτηνή συντήρηση.

Ο μόνος που θα μπορούσε να μετατρέψει το ερασιτεχνικό σχέδιο του Χίτλερ σε πραγματικό αυτοκίνητο ήταν ο Αυστριακός μηχανικός και σχεδιαστής Φερδινάνδος Πόρσε.

Ακόμη και με τις δικές του ικανότητες όμως η Volkswagen δεν θα είχε υπάρξει στη σημερινή της μορφή εάν δεν είχε μεσολαβήσει το γερμανικό κράτος για να χτίσει το πρώτο της εργοστάσιο, ο Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμος για να στρέψει την παραγωγή του εργοστασίου σε στρατιωτικά οχήματα, αλλά και μερικές χιλιάδες σκλάβοι, από τις χώρες που καταλάμβανε το τρίτο Ράιχ, για να εργαστούν στις γραμμές παραγωγής.

Ηταν ίσως η πρώτη φορά που οι οικονομικές και γεωπολιτικές εξελίξεις έπαιζαν τόσο καθοριστικό ρόλο στον σχεδιασμό ενός αυτοκινήτου – μια διαδικασία που θα γινόταν κανόνας κάθε φορά που το παγκόσμιο καπιταλιστικό σύστημα εισερχόταν σε κάποια καμπή.

Μετά τον πόλεμο, το μικροσκοπικό Μίνι Κούπερ θα γεννηθεί από την κρίση του Σουέζ του 1956, όταν η Μεγάλη Βρετανία αναγκάζεται να επιβάλει δελτίο στα καύσιμα και οι καταναλωτές ζητούν οχήματα με τη μικρότερη δυνατή κατανάλωση.

Αντίθετα, τα γιγαντιαία SUV θα κάνουν την εμφάνισή τους όταν η γεωπολιτική κυριαρχία των ΗΠΑ εξασφαλίζει χαμηλές τιμές καυσίμων και ενώ η «οικονομία της πίστωσης» επιτρέπει στα μεσαία στρώματα να ονειρευτούν ακόμη μεγαλύτερα αυτοκίνητα.

Εκτός όμως από τον σχεδιασμό των οχημάτων, τα ίδια τα εργοστάσια των αυτοκινητοβιομηχανιών καθορίζουν και καθορίζονται από τις διαφορετικές φάσεις της παγκόσμιας οικονομίας.

Το μοντέλο Τ της Φορντ θα εισαγάγει τις γραμμές μαζικής παραγωγής και μαζί τις σύγχρονες σχέσεις εργασίας των βιομηχανικών εργατών.

Η εκρηκτική μεταπολεμική ανάπτυξη, με τις τάσεις σχεδόν πλήρους απασχόλησης και την ενίσχυση της ζήτησης μέσω αυξημένων ημερομισθίων που εξασφαλίζονταν από ισχυρά συνδικάτα, περνούσε για χρόνια από αυτές τις γραμμές παραγωγής του φορντισμού.

Μερικές δεκαετίες αργότερα τα μοντέλα της Toyota καθορίζουν και καθορίζονται από τις σχέσεις παραγωγής που επικρατούν στην Ιαπωνία αλλά και σε περιοχές της Ευρώπης.

Θα μπορούσε, λοιπόν, και το σκάνδαλο με τις μετρήσεις ρύπων στα οχήματα της Volkswagen να σηματοδοτεί μια νέα εποχή στην παγκόσμια αυτοκινητοβιομηχανία, είτε σαν αντανάκλαση είτε σαν προβολή ευρύτερων αλλαγών στην παγκόσμια οικονομία;

Καταρχήν τα σκάνδαλα συνήθως σηματοδοτούν το τέλος μιας εποχής, καθώς οι εμπλεκόμενοι δεν έχουν πλέον την πολιτική και οικονομική ισχύ να κρύψουν τις ατασθαλίες τους.

Τα επόμενα χρόνια ίσως μάθουμε πληροφορίες για τον ρόλο των ΗΠΑ στην αποκάλυψη του σκανδάλου και πώς αυτό σχετίζεται με τον διαρκή εμπορικό πόλεμο των δύο οικονομικών υπερδυνάμεων.

Στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση, όμως, φαίνεται να υπάρχει και κάτι πιο βαθύ που μας… ρυπαίνει.

Η περίπτωση της Volkswagen, έγραψαν τις τελευταίες ημέρες οι «Financial Times» και ο «Guardian» αποτελεί «το σκάνδαλο Libor της αυτοκινητοβιομηχανίας».

Πρόκειται για τη διαβόητη υπόθεση χειραγώγησης του επιτοκίου διατραπεζικών χορηγήσεων του Λονδίνου (δηλαδή των επιτοκίων που χρησιμοποιούν οι τράπεζες για τον μεταξύ τους δανεισμό) που έφερε στο φως το δυσώδες παιχνίδι του παγκόσμιου χρηματοπιστωτικού συστήματος.

Αν καταρρίπτεται ένας μύθος με το σκάνδαλο της Volkswagen, δεν είναι φυσικά ότι οι μεγάλες βιομηχανίες δεν προστατεύουν το περιβάλλον (αυτός ο μύθος δεν έβρισκε χώμα να φυτρώσει ούτε στα πιο αδύναμα μυαλά των υποστηρικτών της εταιρικής ευθύνης).

Αυτό που επιβεβαιώνεται είναι ότι η παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση δεν οφείλεται σε μια ομάδα ανήθικων χρηματιστών (όπως του Martin Shkreli που ανέβασε πρόσφατα την παγκόσμια τιμή των φαρμάκων για το AIDS), αλλά πηγάζει από τους πυλώνες της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής.

Ο μύθος της καλής, πραγματικής οικονομίας που θα ανθήσει και πάλι μόλις απομακρύνουμε τα ζιζάνια της χρηματιστικοποιημένης οικονομίας (μύθος στον οποίο στηριζόταν εδώ και χρόνια και μεγάλο κομμάτι της ευρωπαϊκής Αριστεράς) καταρρίπτεται με κρότο.

A response to misinformation on Nicaragua: it was a coup, not a ‘massacre’

There is so much misinformation in mainstream corporate media about recent events in Nicaragua that it is a pity that Mary Ellsberg’s article for Pulse has added to it with a seemingly leftish critique.
