The ruthless elites construct the new enemies

In his poem Waiting for the Barbarians, the famous Greek poet Konstantinos Kavafis describes the agony of the ruling class who is waiting for the barbarians to come. And the poem ends: "And now, what's going to happen to us without barbarians? They were, those people, a kind of solution." So, what do you do when you don't have the useful barbarians? Simply, you construct new ones.

by system failure

How do the recent attacks in Paris are related with Greece and its devastated economy? Greece is unable to control the waves of refugees and therefore many jihadists can penetrate in Europe through these waves, someone could respond through this most obvious answer. But there is a much deeper correlation between terror attacks in the European soil and Greece's economic situation, as a result of the so-called Greek neoliberal experiment.

During previous decades, especially during 50s, 60s and 70s, the Western elites had the Soviet Communism as the useful enemy, in order to exhibit the hypothetical superiority of the Western way of life. A way of life which was based on the excessively advertised civil liberties, the unlimited economic activity, and, the mass consumption.

The provocative operations, orchestrated mostly by the US intelligence inside European countries (Gladio in Italy, Red Fleece in Greece, etc.), were targeting the so-called Leftist extremism and aiming to turn the public opinion against anyone who would dare to question the Westernization of Europe. Through this way, the US managed to secure their sovereignty over Europe.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, there was no enemy to be confronted. The West was playing alone in the global arena. The banking-corporate complex was free to conduct wars anywhere, anytime, to boost its profits. Everyone seemed to be happy (except those who were destroyed by the Western wars), through a bubble economy and a fake prosperity. But it couldn't last for long, as always.

After the 2008 economic crisis, things have changed dramatically. The Western neoliberal establishment is using Greece to impose the new conditions. As the elites are breaking the social contract, the need of further suppression measures inside the increasingly militarized Western societies is more necessary than ever. But the old enemy has gone. They had to construct a new one. The new barbarians made their first spectacular appearance on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. This was what the elites needed to open Pandora's box with the war in Iraq.

The dissolution of labor rights and welfare state, the unprecedented unemployment, the cuts in pensions and wages, the sell off public assets in the Greek experiment are not an accident. It is the new model, carefully designed to be applied in the entire West. How the Western societies could tolerate such dramatic changes against what they have conquered in the past? The answer is simple: the elites had to construct a new enemy, more ruthless than anyone in the past.

So, how the new jihadist barbarians are useful to the elites in our era?

1st, they disorientate people from the real enemy, the elites themselves, who are the ones exclusively responsible both for the wars and the absolute mess in the Middle East, as well as for the new conditions based on the Greek experiment.

2nd, they can apply further suppression measures inside the Western societies without significant resistance, in order to justify the elimination of - the excessively advertised in the past - civil liberties. Progressively, no one would be allowed to protest against austerity in the name of security from terror attacks.

3rd, they feed extreme nationalists and fascists. The useful tool which the elites mobilize everytime they need to distract attention away from them. These are now quite useful to do the dirty job, which is to get rid the "unnecessary load" of thousands of desperate refugees, and, confront the Leftist threat which may turn against them.

Europeans must be distracted from the real war and turn against Muslims.

Furthermore, anyone who would dare to question the new conditions, the propaganda parrots of the establishment will have already an available stereotypical answer to respond: this is the best we can have, accept the new conditions, or, you will get absolute chaos. Which, in essence, is an indirect threat.

In an extreme version of the "brave new world" of the future that is designed for us, we will not be allowed even to criticize, or, dispute it. The excuse will always be the same: criticism could motivate extremists to proceed in new terrorist actions ...
